Brian Wilson's genius was his ability to write gorgeous melody...listen to Fleetwood Mac's version....beautiful. They don't make genius to write melody- like Brian Wilson anymore!
Brian's complicated melodies and harmonies often superceded the subject matter of the songs... (Mike Love's campy lyrics usually) which is why he got help from Tony Asher to write the Pet Sounds album...
Lovely early song showing the brilliance to come, good photos unusual too, .I never knew David Marks and Al Jardine were in the band at the same time, so well done and Thanks. John
There are a few great Beach Boy tunes taht were overlooked as singles..how about "All Summer Long"..in the summer of 64'as a follow up to "I Get Around".....Farmers Daughter, Let Him Run Wild, No Go Showboat, Girl Don't Tell Me, Spirit of America, Betsy, Please Let Me`Wonder and of course, Kiss Me, Baby from the TODAY LP....
@sunray65 I think The Lonely Sea from Surfing USA is criminally over looked. It's so beautiful... the sensitivity that flourishes in Pet Sounds can be seen very clearly even at that early point!
This really captures Wilson's beautiful, beautiful voice. Here, he's tinkering about with his newly discovered falsetto, and it really shows. A cute, simple, and sweet number. My pick for best song on the Surfin' USA album.
Great song here. Sometimes the greatest songs never become number one. Red Rubber Ball by the Cyrkle was beat out by either Strangers in the Night or Something Stupid. Whichever it was it certainly was something stupid.
@pmoyer50 Red Rubber Ball is easily one of the best songs of the 60's...and so is this one. Farmer's Daugher, for its original, clever lyrics (I'd expect these to be in a Bluegrass song), the way the song was put together, and just how damn good and catchy this is, should've been overplayed on the radio and should've then hit #1. It's a travesty that this wasn't a Beach Boys chart topper. Brian sounds phenominal in this one, and the harmonies are gorgeous. One of their best.
@barrygioportmorien1 It was never released as a single, Barry. Perhaps an oversight by the record company, for Brian had yet to establish full control.
Brian's voice is so special he was able to record an album with multi track recordings of him singing lead, and harmony. His voice is such a great range. He can do whole albums with just him, but at times his voice has been off in concert.
I love this Beach Boys "Farmer's Daughter" (Key of F: 1F-4Bb-5C). This is one of my favorite songs. The first time I heard this song though is the Fleetwood Mac rendition . I wouldn't even know this song if Fleetwood Mac hadn't covered it.
Outstanding song. The Beach Boys are a big part of American music. The music sounds as fresh today as when released over 40 years ago. Some of their sounds bring tears to my eyes today as I think about listening to these sounds in high school in the 70's.
Wonderfully shows the innocence and simplicity of the times and music, but at the same time the way the song is put together you can see that even in those early days there was something special there.
I heard the beautiful Fleetwood Mac version yesterday for the first time at the back end of their 2-CD Tusk album. The live F.Mac version that I just saw on YouTube is weak -- maybe mixed wrong.
Anyway, I had forgotten about this tune, and hearing it from F.Mac reminded me that it's been a long time since I have heard some of the early Beach Boys tunes that I loved...and it would be fun (Fun, Fun, Fun!) to hear F.Mac cover some more Beach Boys tunes.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this tune/video! I am in the process of making a tribute CD based on my brother's favorite music. He died in a plane crash last summer and everyone misses him very much. Farmer's Daughter was a huge fave of his back when this album came out (but very difficult to find today) so I captured an audio copy from your vid for the CD. Hope you don't mind.. and thanks again!!
You're welcome, It is a rare find, it came from the first album I bought in the early 60's. I would like to know how you captured the audio and are able to play it on a CD.
To answer your question.. I simply clicked the record button on my HP computer's media rack just before the song began to play (which captures any current audio playing). Once finished, I click the "stop" button and it gives me the option to save it as a "wav" file.. which I did.. and then burned that file onto a CD as an audio track. Note: Before burning it to CD, I opened the wav flie in Adobe Audition (sound editing program) and cleaned it up a bit for volume, tone and EQ properties.
you sound like Mike Love,i like the Smile type songs,do not believe all that you read in the biography as most of it is Eugine Landy,Brian is far from been loopy
i know what your saying, thought you meant the 1991 biography,It is just that Mike has caused so much trouble over the years for Brian and the group,it is hard to know if everything is true in a book about someone, but hey it has been a rollercoaster ride, but it makes me so sad,i love them all, wish they could make up,life is too short,do a good concert together with Al,Brian,Glen and David Marks
I saw the Beach Boys last year, at Rama Casino, Orillia, Ontario, they did a great show, and Mike is the only original left, I wish Brian could make an an appearance with them. A few years ago Brian was booked at Rama as a solo, I had tickets but he cancelled out, too bad, I went to their show in the early sixties at Maple Leaf Gardens, in Toronto, Brian didn't appear even then, Glen Campbell took his place. He's like "The Shadow". I stand in awe of his talent, but not his intractibility.

I love the Beach Boys.

I am guessing the picture of the Beach Boys at 1:20 was taken just prior to Dennis Wilson's untimely death.

The original version was "Farmers Livestock"..
They preformed it on the Smothers Brothers TV show and got bad reviews..
They changed a few lyrics and it became a hit!

Interesting, I did not know that.

BS. The Smothers Brothers show debuted in 1965.

Apparently this is based on an (relatively innocent) encounter David Marks had with a famer's daughter after a gig.
