  • I think this is from Bumbershoot?

  • I feel like this is his best song. Just the intro, you know the song when you hear it. Its my favourite. It defines him to me. Acoustic. Brilliant chord changes. Finger picking. Its a pretty song.

  • Stabbing yourself in the heart TWICE is a pretty tough feat to pull off.... and why would the girl pull the knife out? Sorry, but that's what's so fishy... HOW THE FUCK COULD YOU PULL A KNIFE OUT OF SOMEONE YOU LOVE!?? Unless you stuck it there in the first place.

  • I love you.

  • all these comments about his death/suicide are so annoying. It seems like no one cares about the MUSIC. If now he was still with us there would be many less useless comments and we'd rather talk about his amazing fingerpicking in this song.

  • ok- i liked a few heatmiser songs back in the early 90's so i looked them up on youtube and found elliot's later stuff. and i really missed a great musical career. fucking great songs. really sorry they passed by my radar, but glad i can hear them now.

  • @travenb at least you know it now man :) its blue skies from here on in

  • elliot smith10 has said it all

  • What do you mean? How did they kill it?

  • i think he went down a rocky path, for sure. he had always been suicidal and his last three years were his worse. i personally think he did kill himself, but it really doesnt matter what our opinions are.

all that matters is once again we lose another great man before his time.

    r.i.p. elliott.

  • I beg to differ, I don't think he did it himself. But as you said - our opinions doesn't matter. RIP.

  • @hheartbeats i try to convince myself over and over that it was his choice. i don't want it to have been someone else's. but i'm with you deep down.

  • I was at this show, the day after my birthday. I couldn't believe how wonderful the concert was. I was in tears the whole time, I hope your beautiful soul rests in peace Elliott, your deeply missed.

    Beautiful song.

  • it looks like he dosen't feel good with that guitar

  • explain?

  • i agree.

he played fine, but it's not his old, beat-up yamaha.

  • elliott's cord changes are what i find mesmorizing.

  • you know when he was a kid - like 10 - he'd write songs that he described as basically a lot of chord transitions, because he said that that was the most interesting part of songs.

As a side note, I've been looking for the best live performance on youtube, and it's really sad to see him get more and more desperate and strung out with time. Poor guy.

  • that is, the best live performance of angeles

  • i think this is the only video ive ever seen where ES is not playing a dreadnought

  • he is playing a dreadnought, its just a cutaway one.

  • does anyone know what type of acoustic amp ES used?

  • he didn't, he always went direct. but theres videos of him playing acoustic through a fender twin or something

  • Elliot Smith is amazing, and fuck that douche who said killing himself was selfish to humanity. Humanity does not deserve Elliot.

  • That could be tooken in a wrong way to offend elliott smith fans. its ELLIOTT

  • oh shit yeah sorry typo it was late night when i wrote that

    *elliott

  • you guys can think he's a pussy for wanting to cash out but stabbing yourself in the chest doesn't sounds like an "easy way out" to me. its not like he blew his head off. love him for what he gave while he was alive, and don't judge someone else for how and when they decide to leave. who are we to try and understand what he was dealing with. mental illness is a motherfucker...

  • thank you. we all hope you rest in peace elliott.

  • @MasterShredder87 I could not a agree anymore.

  • @MasterShredder87 Did he kill himself? Or was it murder?

  • r.i.p. brother

  • I don't feel he killed himself. He looks really sad and stressed out, but I just don't feel like he seems like he would.

    Beautiful song btw.

  • Unku, the best thing that can be said about Elliott is to enjoy his art and not worry about murder conspiracies.

he did kill himself dude; pretty much all of his music going back to the early-mid 90's reflect his outlook on life and self-destructive nature. He gave us all a gift, which douchebags like brandonkirk want to dissect and criticize; rise above all that crap and just appreciate what he left us :) keep listening unku! and brandonkirk should eat his own shit

  • Well, the truth of the matter is no one can ever really be sure unless they were there. Sometimes killing a depressed person is convenient. Overdoses and such are the commonplace with suicides, not multiple stab wounds to the chest!

But nevertheless this man was extremely fortunate -- he had the grace to have passed away leaving behind a legacy in his music. So many people leave us and all we have is a face in a photo to remember them by. This guy has his art to keep us warm on cold nights. :)

  • it was one stab wound...

ps he tried to kill himself three times before that

    he wrote a suicide note

  • On the report from the coroner's office, there were 2 stab wounds to the chest.

  • do you guys think he killed himself or his girlfriend did it? either way i don't care he left a big impact on me and my music! hVE good one elliott:)

  • die.

  • hey man whats your problem? do you just get off on pissing people off by putting down an amazing person like elliott smith? your scum.

  • This guy just likes getting a rise out of people; maybe he wants you to go to his website, which makes him a spammer. He has no interest in commentary or intelligent discussion.

  • I would say he was amazing. "Selfish to humanity," what is that supposed to mean? Everyone is selfish; that's part of being human. I agree that suicide is an easy way out in a sense, but it's rarely the decision of rational people. A lot was going on in Smith's head, drug-related and not. Don't pretend you know anything about him; you have no business judging his decisions.

  • Smith sold millions of records and inspired at least that many people for the better. In all your pretentious altruism, how many people have you inspired? I can't wait to read your self-help book. Finally, I will be able to solve a lifetime of personal struggle with two quixotic sentences.

  • Everyone faces depression, sickness, and heartache. There is no reason he should have taken his life. You asked how many people I have inspired, which proves my point. He was given a talent that others are not, so even more the reason he should have kept going on with life.

  • For all you know he may have wished that he could be here today. He faced a deep depression, and he didn't make it.

Leave it be; your fruitless comments won't make any justice.

  • god you're an idiot

  • Depression can either be the result of inactivity by neurotransmitters in the brain or a lack or production of a "pleasure" hormone like serotonin. The difference between someone going through a shitty experience and someone who is clinically depressed is clinically depressed people have an inability to experience normal "pleasure induced" sensory functions. This can make you not want to eat, not want to have sex, not want to do anything normal.

Know your shit before you hate on ppl

  • Idiot, certain kinds of drugs will elevate your level of "pleasure" hormone at once giving you a tremendous high. These hormones are only meant to be released slowly periodically during the day. When you do decide to take drugs, you have to know that your "pleasure fix" will be depleted causing depression.

  • In Elliott's case I don't think it was the drugs causing the depression. He might have been taking them to temporarily get away from the depression he already had.

That was a nice try though, but you're still a retard.

  • Don't call Elliott an Idiot. He was a brilliant, beautiful person, he had problems, he was human.

  • You are seeing this purely from a biological side, and you are stating it as pure fact. There are many theories on depression, and nothing to say each one is true, including yours....

But I really don't want to be dragged into this, not here.

    R.I.P, Elliott - Great Song.

  • lol if you don't want to get dragged in then why'd you say anything you douche

  • Hey man, here's an idea: go fuck yourself. That way maybe you'll be preoccupied, and then you'll stop insulting people on YouTube.

    Just a suggestion, though.

  • Stop talking about him being depressed even the ones who are trying to defend him.

  • He took his life, because maybe it was his time. You can't ask someone to suffer, because he is talented, and because he needs to keep producing music. That's the most selfish thing you could say.

  • i'm still not sure he killed himself.

there's so much evidence promoting foul play.

  • This is one of those Cobain murder conspiracy things. Personally I think he was killed, but most people think he was murdered. But that's not why I posted the comment; it wasn't to decode the conspiracy theory, it was to state that he wasn't selfish. I didn't want to say he was murdered because the person I was replying to said he killed himself. I'm not here to go over if he killed himselfOrNot(even though I'm a strong believe in his murder, being that there were so many things pointing to it)

  • how do you know he took his life???

    were u there?

  • yeah, i agree, theres to many question marks surrounding it, everyone just marked it as the depressed selfish rockstar looking for an easy way out, i really think that that wasnt the case

  • i know you wrote 11 months ago, but im sure his album making wouldnt have stopped him, he wasnt in it for the money he was in it for making songs related to his life.

  • you are a retarded douchebag. keep your ignorant philosophies to yourself. he gave more to humanity than a million bigmouthed judgemental idiots leaving comments on youtube about their 'philosophy on life'. I would love to hear back from you exactly what you 'give' in life that leaves you in a position to pass judgement on anyone else. the simple fact is that Elliott gave so much more to his fellow humans than he ever got back, which is reflected in his art.

  • That's right . . . I couldn't have said it better myself; and I patrol this place for fools. They don't get it and they never will. But YOU and I, we transcend.

  • I have to disagree with you on so many things. He was and still is amazing. Stabbing yourself is really not an "easy way out", think of the pain he had to have suffered, for so long, to decide that upon himself. It's not a selfish thing to do at all, someone shouldn't have to suffer because "humanity needed him". Think of how long he fought, it's a selfish thing to ask someone in pain to keep on fighting. You're the selfish person.

  • are you retarded dude? elliott smith was and still is AMAZING.

  • i wish u were here now and we can listen ur soul......

  • i can almost feel his pain in this song. fuck.....its really quite beautiful.

  • He looks like eddie vedder in this video.

  • not a nice tone in this vid from the guitar.. i dont see his usual chrome looking pickup thing he uses

  • i CAN play this song! :]

  • I learnt this song today. I can play it sounding *exactly* the same as him, yet his left hand shape is always different. Ahh well.

  • In which album is this song?

  • either/or

  • awesome huh?!!

  • I miss you Elliott.

  • yeah i´m learning right now, but it´s a little bit difficult because normaly i play classical songs... Elliott Smith Style picking isn´t easy^^

  • Hes the best

  • I'm gonna be able to play this one day, you wait & see

  • i sort of can. its super tough tho
