Philippines kept on fighting the Japanese from 1941 al the way to 1944 with the 30,000 Commonwealth and 5,000 American soldiers who refused the US order for surrender in 1941, so much so that by 1944 the Japanese can only hold into the major cities in the Philippines but have no real power outside those cities

Also I'm not familiar with any celebration in Japan that commemorates the war crimes of its troops in WW2, but it could be that the Prime Minister is paying tribute to the brave soldiers that served during that time in history.

@utra1337 The Japanese flag has about has much evil or sinister connotation as any other flag which uses symbols. Its design is based off its name as the Land of the Rising Sun. Also I'm not familiar with any celebration in Japan that commemorates the war crimes of its troops in WW2, but it could be that the Prime Minister is paying tribute to the brave soldiers that served during that time in history.

@cra2ymofo Considering Japan invested 55% of its GDP into military during the height of its militaristic regime, I would be ridiculous to say that Japanese soldiers were "brave". Battles were completely lopsided as the Japanese raped and pillaged their way through China and Indo-china, using biological and chemical weapons. As for the flag itself, it wasn't adopted until 1870, prior to that, during the traditional Edo period, there was no reference to Japan as being "land of the rising sun"

The flag design that you are referencing wasn't adopted until that time but the words Nippon and Nihon which is Japanese for Japan means "Sun's Origin" which can simply be put as "Land of the Rising Sun" which started way before the 20th century. Also are you saying that technological superiority negates any brave action of a soldier?

You can't blame them for doing what they did since they were raised to believe it. Being brainwashed doesn't make their sacrifice to defend their nation any less meaningful. Allies also had their fair share of brutality but history is written by the victor.

In the early 1950's my Father served on the Destroyer USS Hazelwood which sustained major damage from a Kamikaze attack during this battle. They where providing support for the men on the island. And trying to stop resupplies to the Japs on the island.
