On the part where you make sure that it says "one frame per layer (replace), it doesn't do anything unless you click the bottom box- "use disposal above for all frames." just helping. Did a little experimenting around and figured it out.
I love the vid dude im using a Mac OS X and i follow the vid precisely but when i save i click "save as animation" and i noticed at the bottom of that window there are check boxes for making the image greyscale or indexed i left it as indexed just as you did but when i reopen it the animation wont play and the pic in the animation which i did not change the colour of, the colours have gone blotchy as if it were pop art :( Plz help me . but other than my epic fail i love your vids :)
really? i never "PRONOUNCE" it, being an acronym, I call it a G I F file
let me ask there since you know all about the "correct" pronunciation of acronyms that arent even really words... how do you pronounce .cbr files? lol, please i dont really want you to try to answer
your tutorials have been really useful, especially since I can do these things without photoshop. There is nooo way I am going to spend that much money on software.
I LOVE YOUR ACCENT! I can do an impression of it, it's so awesome! And great video too, I'm trying to learn how to become the great Gimpmaster and this helped me alot! Thanx!
I've done crap like this using different programs to change the colors, then gone to pivot to have it cycle. This is so much more simple, because it cuts out like ten steps. Thanks muchly :)
i did this, but how to make it play? i tried to make it my profile picture here on youtube, but it's just a boring picture, not animated. Is there something else i need to do to make it play? Thanks again! I will be so sad when i get to the last tutorial!
Ive seen people making certain parts of a picture animated while the other part is black and white. Could you please tell me how or tell me a link for a tut. Thanks!
you need to select the appropriate layer in the layers dock and also ensure it is the uppermost visible layer, which can be done by clicking on the eyeball next to the layers to make the others invisible etc...
If you do everything I do in the tutorial it will work.
The only sugesstion I can make is that you record yourself doing it using camstudio, which can be downloaded for free, and showing me what is going wrong so I can help you more specifically.
If you do this, leave it as a video response to this video.
At 6:05 (I think that's when) you can change "(combine)" to "(overlay)" which I find quite useful. It overlays the images over each other, and works great for GIF animations with an alpha channel, from what I've seen, it makes it look better on certain GIFs.
last time I checked, all the files he linked to were available for download. You need to ensure when they are unzipped that they go into the correct Gimp program folders in your c:
You need to paste a the text from a txt file that contains the drost code into the mathmap dialog box. As I remember that is also in the zipped folder, but you may have to download it from elsewhere on his flickr page...should be linked to if that is the case.
Hey, great tutorial, But I was wondering, Ive seen some pictures like yours but they turn and go into the picture and it keeps going and going if you know what I mean, like it would zoom into the mouth while turning around and it would keep going, do you know how to do that? :S
you could do something like that as an animated gif using the same process described in this tutorial...instead of cycling through colours for each frame, rotate the image by a couple of degrees. As for zooming in while doing that, that may have been an illusion simply achieved by rotating an eye catching picture, but could be done with an incredibly high resolution picture so that it doesn't pixelate as you zoom and rotate...personally i wouldn't bother with the second process.
thanks =D also, I tried installing math map, while following the instructions on the guys flickr page, but I couldnt get past the part where it tells you to find "mathmap" and paste some more files into it :S
Excellent tutorials, being a new user of GIMP I can make use of them. One problem I had with this tutorial, I can get the annimated gif to work on my desktop but when I upload to my youtube profile ( total size under 250kb) it just sits there and does nothing. I'm using GIMP 2.4.5 for Windows. Am I missing something?
I've never actually tried to upload an animated gif to YouTube, but I did have a lot of problems with my profile page as a result of uploading a regular static image...YouTube can be very glitchy, I'm afraid...I don't have a solution to hand for you.
Thanks for the reply, thinking about it again I wonder if it is something that youtube does when it resizes the upload to 75x100 pixels. I might try a sries of uploads to check this out. Thanks again for your tutorials.
On the part where you make sure that it says "one frame per layer (replace), it doesn't do anything unless you click the bottom box- "use disposal above for all frames." just helping. Did a little experimenting around and figured it out.

I've thought about this, and decided against it.
An excellent tutorial already exists, by the guy that adapted the mathmap code. Check the video description for a link to it.
I don't want to steal credit for somebody elses hard work. Check out the tutorial on Josh Sommers' Flickr account instead.
