The ash that covers the coals is mush cooler then the coals themselves. Ash does not hold or conduct heat so it's safe to walk on them. Nice trick that has been done by people for thousands of years.

Pacific Islanders have been walking on fire and embers for centuries in honor of the fire goddess Pele. It's wonderful.
