that the way i allways did the drumms on my tracks (midi) and im a guitarist :P thats just a normal way of variating a sng when the guit part is simple, he's doing triplets over... normal timing, i even use quintuplets wich makes and awseom feel on 4/4 or 6/4 (it shifts the accent back and forth and when combined with a matching guit part, this totaly redifine the exact same riff :P)
