Its the exact same issue as with race horses. The more animals a breeder produces the more money they make. The owners are basically in it for gambling. That animal no longer wins or turns enough of a profit, they have no use for them. As for the retired dogs... a greyhound isn't a good match for everyone who wants a dog, and every dog owner has a limit as to how many animals they can take care of. The only real solution is to lower the rate at which these animals are produced.

I undersatnd where people are coming from with the "adopt a dog in need" push, but in reality all you are doing is stopping resopnsible breeders who care about the health, temperment, and quality of the dogs they produce, in favor of dogs with unknown temperments and backgrounds. There needs to be a bigger push on spay/neuter for non-breeders.

As far as racing in particular, as long as its a profitable industry, there will be more dogs produced than homes for the retired dogs.

If the race industry is breeding 10's of thousands of animals every year, it is inevitable that at least half will not be kept as pets/ breeding animals after their careers are over. How many pet homes do you expect to find every year? How else do we fix this problem?

I agree, it's a complex issue. Racing greyhounds should be allowed but abusing them should not, people should adopt dogs instead of buying them, that would help current issues a lot.

The next step is not supporting abusive workplaces, which is a lot harder to do. We can't even get the treatment of fellow humans to a decent level.

The majority in industry treat dogs well, place for adoption and report abuse.

This video really made me cry. I have retired greys as well as racers and I help out at the kennels and help to find them a good home to ensure this doesn't happen. We adopted our greyhound 4 years ago from a wonderful rescue group. He was very timid and had a shattered hind leg. We show him how gentle people can be and show him patience and love everyday. We found a greyhound only obedience class which helped alot too. Our dog is so thankful and so cute. He is a little social butterfly now but occassionally still gets spooked. I love greyhounds!

In my neighbourhood, in Canada there is this beautiful lady who adopted a greyhound from a a racetrack in the USA. During the day while at work she has someone come in twice a day to walk her. It is really sad however because she had been just raced and kept caged she is unable to accept affection - she cowers and is extraordinarily timid. If you race a dog and claim to be different then the rest I dare say you are in denial - its like saying you do not believe in slavery but have one anyhow.

No backyard needed - they have been in a cage, they are great in a small apartment. When they run they run so hard they really can't do it more than once a week and not long then. They are happy just being walked. They do like company though - and I've known people with two greyhounds in an apartment. OMG this is discusting. I am only 17 and I thought I had my doggy plans just about sorted but now im not so sure. I may have to think about getting a resue greyhound. I spose someone has to otherwise the poor things will just be left to rot!!

I new a wonderful resue lurcher so I know first hand the kind of dogs they are. Wonderful! and they dont deserve that if anyone does its HUMANS.

sad to see that :( my uncles friend used to race greyhounds he started with 3 and ended up with 60 because he took in the loosers and trqained then to be champions
