they wanted to make final fantasy 7 for the snes, the technology was old so the decided on the n64. the character designs weren't finished for ff7 yet so they used ff6 characters as a base. realizing later that the n64 did not have enough space to facilitate the cut scenes on the cartriges, they went with the playstation.
In August of 95, one of the US's largest CG conventions, SIGGRAPH, was held in Los Angeles. At that time we were not sure what the next generation RPG game should look like, so as an experiment we created a CG based, game like, interactive demo to be presented at the show. It focused on battle scenes that were 100% real time and polygon based. This became the seed of Final Fantasy VII and it was then that we decided to make this a CG based game.---quote--Hironobu Sakaguchi,
This isn't the sequel for ffvi, this was Square messing around with ideas for 3D graphics on the n64 because from ff6 downwards they were all 2D, they ended up turning this into ff7 and had to move to sony cause the graphics and data wouldnt have been able to fit on a cartridg, i mean it cudnt even fit onto one disk.
This is NOT a tech demo for Nintendo 64. It's an interactive game demo for Silicon Graphics Onyx supercomputers equipped with RealityEngine graphics boards. these SGI visualization machines were higher-end than even normal workstations. They cost $100,000 and UP. people make this mistake all the time -- it's not running on N64, or N64 dev-kits. It's not called Final Fantasy 64 or FF6 or FF7. it's not a prototype of FF7.
it's a shame that this game could not be released. ff vi was always my favourite and i hope square can one day make my dream true in releasing another game in this universe or atleast a remake!

this game ended up being the Final Fantasy 7 that was released for the playstation. i'm personally glad it came out for PS and not N64.

yeah. specially since they've been doing that kind of stuff for other final fantasies like VII, X, and even the original #3.

Thanks for that... I've always wanted to see the video. That would've been so cool if they released it as a real game, haha.
