It's November 1974 and I have just got married in the white church in Boddellwidan in North Wales. I am in my Karman Ghia heading back to Sale Cheshire drinking beer with this album blasting out on the 8 track. Shit hot.
Brilliant - just reliving my youth while my family are away & listening to all my old favourites, & Steve Harley for me is one of the most wonderful singer/songwriters ever. Have all his LPs but nothing to play them on.
Even the idiot Charles Shaar Murray of New Musical Express liked this song, while trashing the rest of the album. It's unbelievable how much venom the rock critics of the day threw at Harley. Well, he's having the last word.
psychomodo has got to be their best album and this song is one of the best, 'singular band' was another great tune, the whole album has such a distinctive aural atmosphere, like you were in the middle of a theatrical experience.
I loved Cockney Rebel seen them live at the Glasgow Apollo, when they were at number one. We loved Steve Harleys voice. Many romantic nights in playing there albums, and drinking beer. We were Big Big Bowie and Numan fans and Cockney Rebel just seemed to to fit right in. Ohh happy times. jim
is there a movie for the life of steve harley?i think i saw it but it was years ago, and i dont remember its name..if anyone knows let me know plzzzzzzz
Hi jacotango, I think this is one of Steve Harley's best songs the other song you are refering to is called Cavaliers, i think not testisfy, correct me if im wrong, both are great songs
@oashitaka 'Psychomodo' was EMI LP matrix number EMC 3033, produced by Alan Parsons – of Alan Parsons Project fame – orchestral arrangements by Andrew Powell – who later producer for the likes of Kate Bush, Al Stewart and The Hollies. Popular in the UK this LP didn't crack the US market the way EMI had hoped ... some reviewers felt SH's lyrics and style shared a lot with Bob Dylan ... others not enough! I actually used to fall asleep listening to this as a teenager ... happy days :)
this is off "the psychomodo". their best work imo. make me smile was later and i think it was only realeased as a single. there's a song on this called 'testisfy' wich is brilliant. far better than 'make me smile'.this is hard to get these days, although it may be back in print...not sure sorry.
This album is brilliant, but still outshone by "The Human Managerie", what a shame Steve broke the band up, Singular band was very prophetic.
As the drummer was the only one who survived, and Stuart's drums form the major part of that track along with Steve. Although good in its on way, Best Years never reached these heights and Timeless flight...well the end was nigh
Best track on the LP...and I *always* dug the never-ending ending (i.e. the orchestral bit going into the concentric [run-out] groove at the end of side 1)
This is one of the best Rock-albums made in UK, ever. Just think about it. Song "Ritz" is a jewel among English Rock-songs by any standards. That`s all.
Thanks a lot oashitaka, This is my number one album, and so glad you posted this. If anyone has (the bowler hatted version) of steve's Judy teen from TOTP please upload it, its brilliant, Also singular band from Psychomodo....in fact why not put the whole album on you tube....

Ez a dal egy csoda!
Brilliáns psychedelia és glam tökéletes keveréke!

This song "Ritz" is off Psychomodo. But "Make Me Smile" is originally off "The Best Years Of Our Lives".
Now it could be that you have seen both on a CD; like a Hits compilation.

this and 'death trip' from 'the best years of our lives' are the two most haunting music images i remember from my late teens.
they stick in my mind and haunt me cos i lost 2 good friends in quick succession, and the songs seemed to help me in my bereavement somehow!
super classic, nay, genius tracks!
you can catch steve on bbc radio 2 now as a d.j. google it for times
