I have had this done with both my daughters. Sure its painful, but not that bad really & yes there is risk of miscarriage, but I feel it's worth it. IMO becoming a parent means no longer being so selfish & bringing a baby with serious birthdefects into the world is selfish & NOT an act of love! I would have & will w/ this 3rd baby (presently pregnant) abort if it is to be born to suffer or struggle more than a "normal child". I also have an older brother with Downs.
@IrminsulRM well your a selfish bitch. how about your mother aborted you b/c obviously you had of bitrth defect called stupidity. My daughter was born with gastroschisis, had a liver small bowel, pancreas transplant, and shes HEALTHY AS A HORSE...should i still have aborted her? NO! i love her the same as my "normal" child and you can go suck on one if you think i was being "selfish" by bringing her into this world
I took the test without hesitating. No pain at all and no problem in moving or in performing my daily routine.I strongly recommend it to women over 38 years of age.Hope you all deliver healthy babies, hope mine will be healthy, too.
I had one with my first son, and yes they hurt like hell, I was advised that for MY safety it was necessary. Its easy for some ppl to say that means ur not PRO LIFE but I assure u, I am all for not taking risks, and to not have one I was taking a bigger risk.. Its not really fair to judge others without knowing y they make difficult decisions, luckily everything turned out fine and I have a heathy beautiful 20 month old. So all of u that r looking to judge, clean up ur own backyard FIRST.
I had an amnio at 38 weeks gestation to check for lung development (gestational diabetes can often require a baby to be delivered early, and it can also be the reason a baby's lung's develop more slowly than one that has a mom *without * diabetes*.) I know that the test has it's merits, but holy shit....for me, it was incredibly painful.
For me to get one it would depend on the situation. If you baby is premature you have one to see if it can breathe on its own. I dont see anything wrong with that?
I was offered this treatment and I turned it down. Knowing my son may be born with an abnormality does not make me love him any less. I'd just as well find out when he's born. Even children with abnormalities deserve a chance at life. Even a small percentage of miscarriage is too much for me. I would never risk killing a perfectly healthy baby
What some of you obviously don't understand is that some people such as myself are at very high risk of having a baby with severe chromosome abnormalities such as Trisomy 14 which would result in a baby with countless problems and they will likely not live past 3-4 years old so this test is recommended for people like us. I have been told I should get this done as my baby might have Trisomy 13 or UPD14 but I really really don't know what to do. I can't make a decision.
@GeorgeNEmma I am high risk too but I decided not to have the procedure done because we can find out when the child is born as well. Unless terminating the pregnancy is an option for you (if the test shows a positive results), you can always test your child when its is born. Just keep this in mind when you make your decision - the test isn't always right ^_^ My aunt's daughter tested positive while in the womb, but when she was born she was fine. She is now 7 years old and perfectly healthy :)
During my last visit to the clinic my doctor asked if we would be interested in going through amniocetesis. She told me of the benefits of getting it, but then told me the reason its optional is because of the chances of miscarriage. There's some good things that come out of this procedure, but I could never risk losing my up and coming childs life. Sounds selfish I know.
Fair to say this is not a procedure considered by those who are pro-life, right? Due to the risks to the baby? Then why did Sarah Palin, a self proclaimed pro-life advocate have one?
Only 0.5%? Well that would mean for every 1000 procedures, 5 will miscarry. The narrator say's 1.0%....so 10 per 1000. Beneficial to the parents? Only in that may give them an indication of some abnormalities. It will not prevent any abnormality. Beneficial to the developing child? In no way, unless you consider possible miscarrying a benefit.
@blondesuperman Ok, no. Beneficial to find out about the abnormalities and *may lead to earlier induction date to give treatment to the baby* And do you realize how small those chances are? My baby may have cystic fibrosis and his being in the womb for too long may hurt him. You really think it's not a benefit for us to find that out? Really? Well thanks a ton.
@FalseDisposition If ur baby hs cystic fibrosis any treatmnt wont chnge tht. If can be diagnosed later in pregnancy without risk 2 baby. In the womb2 long? Theres a limit 2how early ur baby can be induced,& still survive. Do I realize how small those chances are? Like the narrator says possibly 1.0% or 10 per 1000 will miscarry. If u feel its wrth the risk, go4it. My gf lost her baby thru leaking of amniotic fluid due2this procedure, plus my friends wife, so I Kno the risk is Real. Thanks a ton.
Incredible! No sterility. a dirty coat, non-sterile gloves! In our Country the Police of National Health control, would immediately closed the office and sent the doctor to court. That's why the English obstetrician are universally considered the worst of the world ( Eddy J.W. Hosp. Med. 2000 march; 61 (3): 204-6)

Amniocentesis should be banned ,If there was ever a way to legally harm a fetus.

I disagree because every baby wants to be born and everyone wants to live rather then be killed.
