  • We really do need a BluRay release of this concert. Live in 85!

  • How many guitarists and composers can even begin to reach the level at which Mark plays his guitar, writes his lyrics, and does it ALL making it as easy as hell??!! That's the unmistakable sign of the true "greats" or "geniuses" in any (creative or other) field. They make the most amazing abilities seem like they're not even difficult or hard at all. How could 11 people has really listened to the guitar playing and lyrics of this song and come away not just amazed, but disappointed or ?

  • mark knopfler god of guitar

  • whats the song about ??? I am not sure its about wars though....

  • @artfuldodger2809 Do you remember Tariq Aziz? He was the "mouthpiece" of Saddam Hussein who was eventually imprisoned. This song makes me think of him - a guy who went along with whatever Saddam said, no matter how brutal. Whether he did it for power, or out of fear of crossing Saddam, this song is about how a man like Aziz finds a last bit of conscience at the end and regrets his part in helping a cruel man maintain power.

  • I would NEVER have thought of this topic, war crimes, as the subject of a song, but Mark pulls it off.... Much appreciated....

  • I think that Mark Knopfler was a drummer in a past life...

  • first and list time you will see Mark Knopfler using a pick

  • @AndreaTurano93 He regularly uses a pick,

There's a song that he plays on every tour that he plays with a pick

  • @magicelliotth Hey, I guess "Expresso Love" is the song you talk about? It is the only song (well, except this live version of The Mans too strong) that I've ever seen him play with a pick. Imagine my shock the first time I saw it (from Alchemy live), lol. :D

  • @avidbookreader He hasn't played Expresson Love in years..........

The song he uses a pick on every time is So Far Away.

But Guy Fletcher says that he uses one semi-regularly on different songs as and when they call for it

  • @magicelliotth Hi, thank you for telling me. Now thinking hard I seem to vaguely recall that I once saw him play a song with a pick, in one of the more recent videos, I think, I just don't remember which. Apparently I haven't done too much digging with "So Far Away", not as much as I have done with Sutans of Swing, Telegraph Road and Tunnel of Love. The live versions of SOA I know (and love immensely) are all from Dire Straits' BiA tour. I'll do some more digging later today. Thanks again.:)

  • @avidbookreader Hiya,

Welcome mate. Always happy to share my geeky knowledge of Knopfler and co with anyone.

  • Esta es una de las canciones que demuestra lo buenos que son los Dire Straits en directo, puro sentimiento

    Gracias por compartir el video

  • the only rock band that makes you a part of every song

  • BENDS ????!!!! hahahahah

  • The man too strong...

An explsion of adrenaline and encouragement!!!

  • I love Mark Knopfler. He is a damn good guitarist, a great singer, an amazing songwriter, and a stand up guy. Probably the biggest musical influence on me.

  • Stunning! what a great band! Direstratis&MK forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • rombizio...ma goni ih u picku materinu...

  • First time I see Mark Knopfler using a pick :)

  • shame I wasn't old enough to see this live. Saying that I would have been embarrased to stand in that crowd of mannequins.....

  • genius

  • I so love this song....and I soooo love this man!

  • cannot fault any of there albums love em

  • I would echo MarieLoiuseLa, the song speaks to us today.

  • A song for our times, to be sure!

  • just another beautiful song by the icon

  • mark is just way too strong excellent post thanks

  • One of my favorite Dire Straits songs. Doesn't get much better than this.

  • Incredible performance, very nice rearrangment from the studio version. Anyone know what guitar Mark's playing here?

  • @RFVideoShoot1998 ovation adamas

  • ENERGY EMOTION and AWE INSPIRING TALENT. beautiful song and it rocks the walls of Babylon we can be stronger. irie

  • @DatingGameKiller !! ABSOLUTELY RIGHT !!

  • Tijdloos

  • @jabramapi Zondermeer. Blijf 't goed vinden, maar wel met pauzes. ;-)

  • 11 people are Bieber's fans

  • Let me just die here, enjoying these beautiful sounds...

  • Oh, I gotta say, I had the vinyl copy in 1985, and enjoyed the entire project. But the "Money For Nothing" song is NOT the best song on the album, in my opinion.

  • Yes, the most under rated song by a very under rated band!!! Great video, Granada28. Excellent song.

  • the most underated song of Dire Straits!

  • @superschirpi I have to agree with you completely !!

  • @superschirpi Yeah I have to agree.:-)

  • One of their finest songs. Thanks for the upload!

  • I have always wondered why this Dire Straits song wasn't a monster hit.

  • knopfler with a pick?? cool!!

  • This version is a bit stronger than the original. I like this very much. This is one of the songs of Dire Straits that are not that known. This is a beauty ...

Does someone know what happened with Alan Clark ( piano ) ?

  • @fetsorg You're right mate, this song is highly under-rated! Sorry but I can't answer your Alan Clark question but I do agree with your "this is a beauty" quote :-)

  • @fetsorg Alan is happy enjoying a well earned retirement from playing live on this scale. He runs his own home studio in Northumberland, England, and recently popped up playing shows in Italy with John Illsley and Chris White. He also works with new musicians coming through the ranks locally.

  • love this tune/wynn

  • one of the Underrated bands

  • Oh how I love this song.

The words were true in the 1980's and are more true in the 2000's.

  • dire straits melhor bandas de rock 80 marcou muita gente ate eu massa

  • A war song that our leaders should have listened to.

  • Mr Knophler is too good to play an ovation. a miced martin would given him better tone on this great song, a miced anything would sound better then tis guitar that has no bass

  • wow cool seeing him with an acoustic awesome!!

  • LOVE YOU MARK!

  • @theezekiel: No this one is about Hitlers final days....

  • @knopfleberg I've been wrong before. In this song when he was referring to the Priest of Judah, I thought he was talking about the Priests of Judah and how they sort of legalized robbery in the temple. Mr. K is the master of double meaning poetry and I know his parents survived the Holocaust too. Its just good listening for sure.

  • @TheEzekiel38 That's good that they survived, so Mr. Knopfler could have had a mommy and a daddy and we could have had Mark Knopfler :-)

  • this song's too strong

  • must say.....better than the studio version.

  • @thegateman89 Aww...no way. This live version completely lacks the slides of Mark's National guitar which is pictured on the album cover.

  • @Nater389

be a shame to electrify it

  • no one like him...

  • I would so give my left .. , to play like Mark. Seriously

  • @nprbiz

Im afraid that if youd do so you wouldnt be able to play at all..

  • OMG!

  • Oh kako je ovo dobro!

  • what a masterpiece.

  • I know that guitar... hmmmmmm.

  • musica melhor do mundo

  • one of the only song he sometimes uses a pick.

  • @marcisgreatAA there are more song where he,s jous a pick but that was in the later days it was more a period;-)

  • the whole cd is awesome and this song is just too damn good. Knopfler always has played with such a cool, laid back seriousness when he plays, just so talented. There are so few, if any, bands today that can write musci like this.

  • This whole album truly magnetic

  • its the lyrics , .....tremendous stuff

  • @ShitJitsu A lot of Mark's stuff is biblical. I think this is about the Preist of Judah who used the temple of God too steal from people worshipping God. The more people would pay the more the preists would pray for them. There was a lot of torture and persecution. He is amazing!

  • @TheEzekiel38 or its about the british colonialism. but were both probably wrong, great song writers wont pigeon hole their songs with just one understanding.

  • Ive always liked this song i have a recording of it on here if you got the time could you give it a listen that would be great thanks

  • Those peoples are legends !!! Never seen a musician as MK ....

  • i wish we heard more music like this today, as opposed to the crap that saturates American (and British?) popular music.

  • that's cool! :)

  • yes for me too brilliant band , left us with some great music. I sang this song for Britains got talent auditions 2010 , was it the right song choice for that show i dont know i put it up on you tube with a number of others and makes me think , listening to them maybe the song was a bit to deep for the audition but i put my all into the song and always enjoy singing dire straits They was the top .

  • cool, collective knopfler best band period.

  • when was this?

  • Geiles Teil ! Einer ihrer besten Songs. Aber "Money for nothing" bliebt unangefochten DER beste !

  • This song remembers me old times. No doubt this is one of the greatest british songs ever made.

  • i'm sorry, i've made a mistake. I totally agree with you, i didn't want to underrate your comment

  • synth's playing background thunder sounds?

    cool.

  • For me, the single most greatest rock band.

  • @Dcikula you mean bands

  • @yoavasi yeah i meant bands, english isn't my native language so..

  • @Dcikula It is not one of the greatest bends, it is THE BEST.

  • @Dcikula Mark is not gay. He plays in a BAND, not bend.

  • @Rombizio English is not everybody's native language, so f*ck off!

  • @Dcikula Then don't write in English. You look like a fool.

  • @Rombizio OK, then I will write something for you in my language: KRETENU JEDAN netolerantni!!

  • @Dcikula HAHAHA Deixa de ser um babaca chorão sua bichona enrustida!

  • @Rombizio STFU, retard, everybody knows what he meant! You could try to listen this masterpiece instead of argueing, and correcting others... Otherwise, i think your brain is what has to be corrected.

@Dcikula Ne daj se brate, i svaka čast na izboru muzike :)

  • @JaTLegenDe HAHAHAHAHA Defending your gay partner eh? I see. At least write "ARGUING" properly, before calling other people a retard. You guys are probably from Serbia, Yugoslavia or Bosnia, so it is not surprising you can't write properly. Bunch of worms.

  • @Rombizio No, i'm just defending normal people that like music from haters like you, regardless of their knowledge. Yes, i made mistake, and what? Humans made mistakes, you're living proof of that :) I also noticed that you use that word "gay" very often... Maybe that's in your nature? Oh, and insults on national basis... Bunch of worms from Serbia? Said by one portuguese, lol, funny little guy :)

  • @JaTLegenDe I am not from Portugal. And I am tired of correcting your spelling. I give up. I will let you live like the ignorant maggot you are. You deserve no help.

  • @Rombizio I saw that right away, but i left it... So you could correct me... Point is that you don't need to correct everyone 'cause i'm sure you've understood it well... But no, you want to humiliate people... That shows what kind of person you are actually... And you say that i "deserve no help"? I don't know why am i still writing to you after all.. You're obviously frustrated little man from wherever you are.

  • @JaTLegenDe Do you have anything against portugal? I dont care about where youre from, but i shall warn you that our country is one of the oldest nations in the entire world. WE taught the english to drink tea, WE have one of the richest gastronomy in the world, OUR language is spoken in 5 continents, WE invented the prefabrication of buildings in stone, OUR empire was the longest in world history, ...Do i need to call you ignorant or are you more clarified about our greatness?

  • @Dcikula "BENDS" ?!?!?! hahahahah

  • Yes got it on video too, also I was there at the concert. Luck you I hear you all say, yes I was!

  • briliant band, they got the reconission they deserved..

  • Just bought THE original 12" record of brother in arms. Man it sounds so good. Cant wait till may when mark knofler is in Holland.

  • Me and my mates still play that record :) (as well as lots of other DS records)

  • Put &fmt=18 to URL end and you will get unbelivable sound guality!!!

  • I've got tickets for Mark Knopfler and I'm looking forward to that. Put another 'thumbs down'. Thank You! Asshole!

  • I already got tickets for Mark Knopfler in June, Cologne/Germany. Lucky me!

  • famous good time ayyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!

  • los mejores!! a ver si vuelven..

  • Funny,. I've got this concert ''Live 85'' still on Video, brings back memories!!!! One of the best DS concerts you'll ever see. Recommend, Sultans of Swing and Tunnel of love from this one

  • this is way better than the album version!! i never realized that this song had such potential till i heard this

  • PLay this over a 600 Watt RMS 7 channel system and youll believe you have explosions going off all around you.

Powerful song - one that most DS fans have never heard done this well. The production version is weak in comparision.

    Thanks for posting this masterpiece.

  • The first time I brought this album home, I put it on my special ceiling suspended turntable (which was in a room at the end of the hallway) and juiced up the sound. The "sound" was four Bose 901's (600 watts unlimited), and four 550 watt Studiolabs all run by two 350/700 watt dynacomp amplifiers, 2 custom made 300 watt power boosters, and two 31 band graphic equalizers, as well as I used eight 150 watt Jensen soundpumpers as floor tweeters. Yep, sounded pretty good. LOL

  • thank you .... soo good to see that

  • Bit too polished for my liking

  • EEEEEEXCEEEEELEEEENTEEE! Música de calidad!

  • Subject: in East Germany - (doughface fetched too I)

Anagram: Gentry amnesia - Cad feud - hogtie chef too

  • Everyones a fluffy one! An old advert tagline - you know?

I visual the dusty heads of the various Judges involved lifting their sleepy eyelids and croaking "where is the evidence?"

SFBs all Fluffy thoughts - WASPs trying someone on their own speciality.

Like a stratch golfer challenging Tiger Woods. No offence but this is my life you know? Anything else - I am a fluffy one too.

True Britannia and La Gifted won yesterday but I cared not. lol

  • The Man is too big. But hey..........! lol

Subject: (labors scion ho inn) plenty to talk about in private comma

Anagram: Moor, mishit. BO - Petty kin tailcoat - Supernova cannonball

  • Can anyone upload the Studio Version for this? please.

  • Ok, I've got to know, was this released on any live DVD? If so, what's the name of it?

  • DVD? 1985? You're kidding, right? It *may* have been released on VHS; but I haven't been able to find it.

  • 1978 started listening to Dire Straits. I was at this concert June 4th 1985.

  • e' un genio e' troppo grande!

  • sooooooooooooooooooo great!

  • i was 16yo old i started listening dire straits and i m now 39 and still love music of dire straits

  • me too, great music :)

  • Father, please hear my confession . . . .

  • Este directo es infinitamente superior al del CD, es una versión brutal y con una fuerza desgarradora, este tio es de los que mejores directos tiene.

    Uno de mis artistas preferidos.

  • @orestemusic top notch!!

  • an absolutely incredible song.... where did this music go??!!!!

  • oceanage: the music is right here! incredible, no?

  • i find a lot of dire straits sounds better live. this sounds much more aggressive than the album version. alchemy was an awesome concert and mark knophler's performance of sultans at nelson mandelas birthday gig was fantastic

  • Why don't they have music like this today?

  • I Agree. I'm only 13 and me and my friend that listen to Rock This music, The rest listen to fucking rap/Techno Shit.

    Long Live 50-60-70-80s

  • @DeagleAndLegendsCSS - keep that up, brave youngster!:)

  • the god

  • i just frickn love this guys guitar play

  • Great song! Outstanding video!

  • baby rape

  • great song from a time when rock was real

  • It's not that rock isn't real anymore, there just isn't any!!!!Check out Gilmour's On An Island, pretty good current stuff.

  • One of my all time favorites.

  • June 1985 remember the date I was there! Took my 12 year old Son he's been a Dire Straights fan ever since. As they say like Father like Son.

  • The BEST song in the world EVER, this topic is not open to discussion.

  • Sounds so familiar. I think my dad played this when I was younger on the stereo.

  • re lyrics: seems silly & archaic now but censorship was a requirement years ago. The Stones' "Let's Spend the Night Together" was played on the radio as "Let's Spend Some Time Together" when it was first released New Year's Eve 1966.

  • Every now and again a live version of a song is performed that should have been recorded for the album and Straits lovers, ...this in one of those songs. By far the best version of this tune possibly ever. Many thanks to whomever uploaded this and if you can, pump this tune through a real system ... its haunting.

  • you're all right.

    the reason:

in the studio lp he sings:

    "give them to your wife"

and l the live version he sings:

"and I lay down with your wife" (wich I like better couse it makes more bad dramatic for this bitter song)

  • In your opinion "Man" is all humanity?

  • The man is the maker.
