The french mini series (8 hours) with Depardieu is about as close to the book as is likely to be ever made, and has nearly all the subplots, poisonings, Vallentine, detailed revenge on all the antagonists. The only gripe is that it wimps out at the end, Edmond and Mercedes joining, rather than Edmond and Haydee sailing away. But, romance wins out over practicality.

While the movie was probably entertaining, why did all of the Count of Monte Cristo films have swordfighting in them? As much as I can recall from the book(not exactly a short read), there was absolutely no swordfights in the entire novel.
