Because it didnt trap the 1/4 mile like an American car? They werent desgned specifically for 1/4 mile, but the new V8 can still hit 12's without a problem. Main thing about this video is neither person got a very good 1/4th mile time. I think a little too much wheelspin was going on.

The biturbo will be a good move for the next m3. Among many reasons, it will also be a lot easier and cheaper to tune than the current v8.

the E46 has the advantage of the SMG2 with launch control, not to mention less weight. it still wouldn't be enough to keep up with the E90's V8, but a few adjustments to the 46 and an average driver in the E90 would be enough to level the field i would say. and i have little doubt the E46 CSL version with a good driver could outdo the E90 on the strip. I'm not certain but i don't think that this E46 is a CSL...

No it can't. The new M3 coupe/sedan run tested 1/4 mile in 12.5 - 12.7 secs at 113 mph while the old E46 M3 ran a best of tested 1/4 mile in 13.2 - 13.4 secs @ 105 mph.

The difference is too big, but put a bad driver in the new M3 and a great in the old then anything is possible.

I have driven both, E46 hands down. With some camwork, ecu tuning intake, exhaust and right suspension, it would pull the v8. These also look muuuuch better

Why is everyone so surprised by this? The E92 is a tank at 3,700 pounds, and only has around 30 more lb-ft of torque. I test drove an E92 and wasn't NOT impressed enough to sell my '06 M3 coupe.

Trying to make yourself feel better?? E92 M3 driver does not know how to race. Period. It still runs a 12.5 - 12.7 secs and traps at 113 MPH consistently. The best a stock E46 M3 EVER would run is 13.3 - 13.4. Look at GTBoard videos of M3 CSL vs E92 M3 and the E92 M3 R*PED the CSL, which in turn is much faster than a stock E46 M3.
