This is so well done! I remember in high school, we had practiced this song and we had planned on singing it for our winter concert but we ended up not doing it because we couldn't get it down to sound good enough. :/ Such a beautiful song but very hard to do.
My basic choir is doing this this year! (Notice - Our Basic choir is made up of freshman, not a lot of seniors or people who have been in choir for very long, and has never read at the advanced highschool level) So far they are beasting it. There is not enough tenor, they are nearly entirely drowned out after the "Freeze thou bitter sky" Part, and wind up getting drowned out when they have the melody later.
@ShamelessScreamDream the tenor's melody near the end is right at our break.....i crack almost every time...so its either yell it or go falsetto...i can't get any power behind it :/
@MrCrazieman maybe try spot checking/ target practicing? or ease your way into the notes dynamically, start piano and crescendo? but also make sure your voice is warmed up to your highest range/ falsetto first. its easier on your vocal chords to be warmed up a little higher than the note you're having trouble with. because then itll at LEAST be easier to get more...core into it, ya know? dont ever push yourself to where your voice hurts, but definitely practice as many ways possible to get it.
Blow, blow, thou winter wind, Thou art not so unkind As man’s ingratitude; Thy tooth is not so keen, Because thou art not seen, Although thy breath be rude. Heigh-ho! sing,heigh-ho! unto the green holly: Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly: Then, heigh-ho, the holly! This life is most jolly. Freeze, freeze, thou bitter sky, That does not bite so nigh As benefits forgot: Though thou the waters warp, Thy sting is not so sharp As friend remembered not.
This is a college singing this!! My 8th grade honor choir is singing this at our winter preformance!! OMG were singing a college piece!! I'm so happy(: I love this song(:
I'm in 8th grade and I have to sing this song by myself for my final and I'm a soprano. I don't think I will be able to hit those high note. Im like freaking out because I only have two days to practice this song. But this is amazing. Good job. :)
i love how everyones critisizing the hey ho or high ho
in my sheet music for FEC try outs (far east choir, its when DODEAs pacific schools get together in competitions, best of the best) well anyway in the one we have it says Heigh ho
George Shearing's choral setting on this text is delightful.
Rutter's "Birthday Madrigals" were written for the occasion of George Shearing's birthday and one can hear Shearing's jazz influence flowing through the whole set.
This choir says "heigh" correctly. It is "hey" not "hi". I teach phonics to my first graders in school.-- eigh is pronounced with a long a sound as in neighbor and weigh and feigning and sleigh. John Rutter is British and would probably not appreciate Americans ruining Shakespeare and the King's English. Heigh ho originally came from the sailors saying 'heave ho/hey ho'. It means (ho hum or oh well).
definitely hi ho over hei ho other wise its awesome..dynamics could b better gets a little boring but its good. sopranos are definitely impressive but couldnt hear the altos
We did this song for honor choir my sophomore year back in 1994. I enjoyed performing it, and still enjoy hearing it years later. This was a fabulous performance...and I agree with HI ho as opposed to HEI ho.
Shakespeare wrote the words, no matter what. I don't believe there was ever a version put to music penned by Shakespeare himself, but the only way to know is time Travel, and since the Doctor isn't here this time, it won't be too easy.
this was beautiful we're singing this song for our madrigal dinner.. im so happy.. I hope we sound this good.. perfect emotional dynamics the basses/baritones should sing out more in the beginning...not much more but..just enough more. and yes..it is "hey" ho.. =] as for facial expressions.. i cant really see much of anything in the faces but what I do see isnt really happy. it's kind of dull my choir is working on that too.. its a common fault.
actually, I hate to say it eagleclass11 but it's pronounced hay. Heigh puts the emphasis on the first vowel. Since the original poem is by Shakespeare, it cannot be "high." It is "heigh," and therefore pronounced like "hay." They did it perfectly, singing it in the Old English that Shakespeare intended. You know how Youtube has an audio preview on the comments you post? Type out "Heigh" and see how it says it.
wow im singing this as a solo and watching this made me realize I need work

Wind should rhyme with unkind in this.

Can be "wind" with a long or short vowel sound...both interpretations are used.
PianoKeys930 2 years ago
@SionCorn1 You'll have to take that up with William Shakespeare.

Some may think that "Hi Ho" sounds better than "Hey Ho", but John Rutter composed it, and he prefers Hey Ho.

yes it is...Act 2 Scene 7 of As You Like it. and it's...Shakespeare.

hmm...r u 100% sure???
Because I think that is not Shakespeare...
I know Shakespeare have also a song with the same title but is faster, with more movement...Because I will sing it in my Singing exams Grade 8.

the words come from shakespeare's play, as you like it....there are several different choral adaptations of these lyrics.

When in doubt, refer to a recording of the Cambridge Singers conducted by John Rutter (Fancies Album) which they pronounced heigh as "Hay".
