  • Her face has weathered with the passage of time and the horrors that she must have seen

  • It doesn't look to be the same person. The nose shape, particularly the lower part, is different. If you compare the facial features one by one you can tell, seems to me.

    Does anyone else think this?

  • @johalieb1

clearly I am wrong...looks like they did an analysis. I agree with the others that it's so sad that a young (by Western standards-30 at the most) woman would look so aged and so changed. The vast majority of Afghan women are illiterate, receive no heath care, and they are apparently the only women who's life expectancy is lower than that of the men of their country. The life expectancy in Afganistan is, I believe, in the low 40's for both sexes and almost the lowest in the world.

  • Seriously, I don't mean to sound offensive, but you would think she would have grown up to be a stunningly beautiful woman, because the original photo featured just that. But now she looks haggered and almost mannish in a way. I have sympathy for her plight/struggles, I'm just being honest.

  • im an afghan! sharbat gull has family memebers in afghanistan even as we speak today(write) she has relatives children, you people have to speak and making bullshit storys, if you dont know her real stoy dont make one of your own,

  • and real culture its veryyyy funny to earn money n our body, our dance, our eye lashes, our nails, our ****** the real beauty of a woman is hidden inside her not out side for all man walking around the street! try to read some lesson about Afghans b-for you guys putting some commentse taken by some monkey mind!!!!

  • Why DALLLLL KHORS are in our side, who is ashgharia rai....its getting annoying to compare some one who earn money on their body, off course its proud for some narrow minded cultures, but according to Afghan rich,

  • Aishwarya rai's eyes are gorgeous too but they are a more dim and a relaxed water blue while Sharbat's eyes have high intensity and are raw and honest with a unique effect

  • Her older eyes seemed a bit drained of hope and her youthful eyes were more bright green and naiive but she has endured a life of hurt in her country.

Her FACE speaks by itself and is worth a thousand words. The world is not kind, it is not fair,

and she is a beautiful victim of it as many else are

  • I remember this documentary very well. It's awesome they found her. She has the most stunning eyes... Hypnotising :)

  • 10 years of Soviet occupation and 10 years of American occupation goddamnit I feel for those people! All of the 80's and all of the 2000's.

  • Is she the same person!?! she looks so ugly no offense :(

  • @MrEDDFire in her country they work all the day they have not doctors

  • Can someone please tell me when the first pic was taken, and when was the second one taken. thx so much!

  • It sucks!! She was SOOO pretty when she was young but fecking ugly when she's older.. :(

  • @MrEDDFire You fucking bastard! Do you know why she's as you put it "ugly"?? Because she's been ran through as a person, no respect. She has no life. Whatever her husband says goes. And when HE's Not in the room, it's whatever man is CLOSEST! EVEN if he's not related to her he has power over her. She was first found in a Refugee camp. Does your stupid ass even know what a refugee camp is or why she HAD TO BE THERE? She had to flee from armed evil people who probably raped her every day

  • man this almost got me into tears....watching shit like this is just ohhh man..

  • The girl is pretty. The woman is fugly (0:43). Seriously...

  • @Inkubzz Omg, Idiot... That Girl is the woman, grown up. that girl is now 35+........

  • @Dyrssen REALLY? :) Wow, you're a genius. Or are you? Let me rephrase it for you: that female person is pretty when she's young, and ugly when she's older. Do you feel like an idiot now?

  • @Inkubzz No Idiot.... you said."the girl is pretty. The woman is fugly..." you're probably refering to "the girl" and "the woman" as 2 different people, you Coward. and no need to be so defensive with ur silly coment. At least nice u rephrase it, and make it more understandable.

  • @Dyrssen There's no real reason for me to explain it to you, but I'll try once more. I know this woman (both young and old version) since like 5 years ago, meaning I know it's the same woman. I think you've realized that and the fact that you failed with your guess that I thought it's two different persons, and you can't admit it like a mature person. But don't beat yourself about it, it's perfectly normal for your species.

  • @Inkubzz Oh come on.. enough with this conversation. I give up. I don't care if u know her........

  • @Dyrssen Thaaat's the spirit! :D

  • that looks nothing like her, the nose and mouth are way different, i know facial features change a bit over time, but not that radically. and im sure she is in no place, or would have the money to go and get plastic surgery

  • I have the same eyes. Strangers come up to me and tell me my eyes are beautiful. I am cherokee, choctaw, and irish.

  • damn, she should have been a model... wish I had those eyes.

  • my eyes are brown. :(

  • SHES SOOO BEAUTIFAL. My eyes are kindda like hers exept they have some blue in em :)

  • this is not THAT little girl. this is lies... THAT little girl was suppose to turn into a super model... wtf happened???!!??!!?? lmao

  • nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • She's fucking scary. Even when she was younger, those eyes were so fucking frightening.

  • she turned from a hot chick into a ugly man!

  • She has really piercing and beautiful eyes, that really tells a story. Even before i read that she was found< i just knew the older woman was her when i saw the second shot some time last year.

  • @shaldana yes, your right, the woman was obviously very heated, but don't you wonder why islam told the woman to wear so much?is to cover so much, because, even though she's suffering, she knows that islam said this so she could be protected from bad men,not saying that all men are bad,but ones who are,may abuse her if they saw she was a beautiful woman, and islam tells the woman that she will be awarded in the afterlife for her endurance,so to her,she is happy to do what her religion say's its best

  • she looks rough :(

  • i have green eyes that change colors depending of my cloth but this womans eyes are captivating and not only the color but the expression.. is tell a lot about what she was feeling.. and for me this picture is beautiful..

  • i dont see nothing impressionant in her...OF COURSE!!she had beautiful eyes, but,my mom have a sea green eyes too,so many people tell her that her eyes are speciall, maybe is something normal to me,haha...

  • lol its because she has green eyes if she ahd brown eyes noone would care xD but shes pretty though dont get me wrong!

  • She is for shure. Give her the money she deserves for been the first lady of National Geographic for many years.

  • TAN BONITA QUE ESTABA.

    AHORA ESTA HORRIBLE!

  • Poor woman. When they found her again, what did they do for her and for her village? Nothing. They were just obsessed over the physical aspect. These vermin would have forgotten about the girl long ago if her eyes had been black or brown. They are racists, not expecting to find green eyes in a country they considered barbarian. They are the world's biggest barbarians and their race is quickly passing away into amoral disintegration.

  • @Askimoula People are always attracted and startled by the unusual - it has nothing to do with being a racist! You have a huge chip on your shoulder and you can't see the beauty in the world and its people because you are so consumed by resentment for some reason.

  • AUN TIENE UN DEJO DE TRISTEZA

  • Aging is a bitch

  • beauty's so fleeting

  • nothing better

  • Her nose is completely different. Are they sure they found the right girl? What evidence led to this conclusion? I hope it's not just her eyes.

  • as an afghan i will tell the world that we have lost our identity our culture and our people i only wish for people to understand who we are what our history was before islam how islam came our ancestors if you reaserch all this you will be awakned and know what is really going on everyday my people are killing themselves from within they praise everything ugly and bad and deny everything good also soudi shit rabia and pakishit is involved in every genocide of this country

  • This is a sad life...

  • I worked there. Beauty comes through the eyes and tells you something profound. That is why she was used. I hope she now is past this.

  • she looks like a man

  • @crackheadjoe1984 obviously by your alias, it sounds like you are currently on crack.

  • Thank you I'll look it up......:-)

  • Could you please tell me the name of this beautiful music????

  • @bettina135 its from the movie called platoon came out in 1985 i think

  • @bettina135 albinoni's adagio

  • @8888JOLABRUTE8888 Thanks but I already found it....;-)

  • @8888JOLABRUTE8888 Thanx so much....;-)

  • One of my most striking memories of seeing Islam is I was in a store one afternoon shopping. It was very hot: 39C with 95% humidity. In walked a man. He was nice & cool with a sleeveless top, shorts and sandals. Behind him came his wife in full black burka, carrying parcels, the children and she was very very obviously over heated. If that's respect and treasuring of a woman, I'll pass. Islam has components in their religion that are beautiful - every religion does. That wasn't beautiful.

  • @shaldana: Yeah, thumbs up, I agree. It's SO easy for men to think of being politically-correct and tolerant towards all beliefs and faiths. When you're a woman, there really IS such a thing as the "wrong" and "right" culture or religion. You literally have no choice but to see things that way, if you want to defend yourself and survive, happily, as a woman.

  • @shaldana that was just a bad husband, nothing to do with islam

  • @shaldana when its too warm i dont wear my black burqa instead i opt for my white and cream cotton burqa and wear nothing underneath except a small top and pants... but i dont feel warm or over heated plus it depends on the way it is worn as long as outside is covered u can wear anything underneath !! beauty should only be seen by the husband or the wife( for each other) not men and women u dont know have a gr8 day love from morocco :)

  • @aliziyah100 I respect your beliefs... however, in my humble opinion, beauty should be shared by anyone willing to share it and observed by anyone with respect for beauty.

  • @nerblebun your so sweet!!

I appreciate the fact that u respected my beliefs and i also truly truly respect ures too :) peace and take care

  • @shaldana I know right? The least he could've done was buy her a white burka with airholes

  • @shaldana islam is the only religion that treat the "women" as queen , unfortunately lot of people misused islam & they gave wrong idea about it .

  • The topic was amazing and it became TOUCHING with the music. Name of the music please ?

  • JESUS FACE???

  • Afganies have incredible eyes.

  • @TheHeroTutorials ,,,not all of tham must of tham look like chines

  • @Ronnii1000 what the hell do you know what afghans look like? the vast majority are not hazara (or mongol descent), they represent 17% of the population, the rest look like every other imaginable race except for black. a very high percentage of people from afghanistan have colored eyes, it's a very common trait in afghanistan. don't talk out of your ass when you don't know what you are talking about.

  • her eyes always show so much pain

  • I remember seeing this photo when it first made the news. I was frozen for a few seconds, as I tried to read "the story" in her haunting expression. Beautifu. Sad. Mesmorizing. Captivating, and intensely thought provoking. As an eye doctor, I stare at people in the eyes all day long, and rarely does my attention wander from the medical perspective. THIS pair of eyes, was definitely an exception!

  • Raised in war, ...oppressed by a male-centric society, ...it's amazing she manages to look as well as she does. Those green eyes are still striking!

  • islam what have you done to your momen?

  • @The021773 Islam has only elevated the women, made us an actual human being, not a sex object. Islam gave women rights that no other religion/government has before. Islam protects and respects women. If any mistreatments are happening to the Muslim women it is done by men, out of their greed for power, amusement and arrogance.

  • @mitsee25 islam protects and respects women....i hope so.its not what i hear from cnn and bbc,

    from fiji.pacific islands

  • @The021773 Thats just it...are you going to judge a faith and its people by the media? Does that do any just to the religion or those who practice it? Lately, there is a lot of reported "incidents" happening inside churches, would it be fair to say that the religion itself is the culprit? I hope not. I think we all know that now days what the media portrays is very much controlled by what they want the viewer to see.

  • Respond to this video...

  • Respond to this video... If you really want to know about a religion then judge by its sources. Not by what you see in the media, others or the people itself. Cuz we are only humans...we can make mistakes. And yes, it is true women in SOME muslim countries are mistreated. But its NOT because of Islam...its done so by their culture, ignorance, and greed.

  • It is a pity that the beautiful child of just 17 years earlier was born into such poverty and an oppressive Islamic society. She has obviously had a hard life and has aged far more than the chronological time that has passed. But at least she is still alive and now we know who she is.

  • pitty these people never benefit from the profit of these photos discusting

  • i assume that The National Geographic made a great deal of money off of this woman. Why has none of the funds gone to her and her family? If it is the most remembered photo in the magazines 100 some odd years of print,i feel strongly that she should be entitled to the money they made off of her.

  • Comment removed

  • @GorditaRebekita NatGeo's a non-profit organization fuckwit.

  • @TwistedWalruse yes they are, a non profit organzation who creates millions of revenue through products, selling and distributing globally. what they incur from this is something called revenue / profit. which in turn pays general costs, wages, future developmentS/projects&research but also SHOULD provide some comforts / gratitude to those used to bring in that revenue. considering most member get paid a salary no doubt... and im sure not a basic wage compared to some of us.

  • @sphynxster06 That is true, they do have income, but if they only helped the ones they photographed without helping any others, what true good does it do?

  • her eyes were beautiful back then but they were also really disturbing. she looked shocked in some deep psychological way, lost, disturbed, disconnected and hurting. it's really a terrible picture, tragic. touching, but tragic. she is not beautiful in the way a secure, confident, safe girl would be in a protected place. she saw awful things before she came to that camp and it's written in those terrible eyes. it's a very sad photograph.

i am glad NG funded education for her children.

  • amazing song

    the eyes, they never lie

  • Striking

  • You know what really would have been great? If the girl with the beautiful Afghan eyes received even 1/10th of what I am sure National Geographic earned on her photograph. She looks like she has had a hard life. Yet, the world is STILL reveling in her childhood beauty... She may even be as well know throughout history some day as the Mona Lisa. She deserved some compensation. Not because she was pretty, because profit was gained from her virtue.

  • For those who feel so deeply, perhaps you can sponsor her and her family with the US Immigrant so they can live here.

  • she was beautiful curious girl, and now her lips "fell" down and she has a sad, wary eyes. I think looks unhappy and hurting ;( is this the difference between little unmarried girl and wife in Afghanistan?

  • @AdamsMartycja No. These are the faces of stoic girls/women from a land tormented by generations of warfare, invasion, poverty, fear and insecurity.

  • @krystallamp yes of course you are right, all you wrote about -this is a background of life of most of those women, co don't say to me No... Political + cultural situation = their lives

  • i saw those eyes way back then & i never for got them,, there beautiful*

  • Her eyes though could melt your heart and hypnotise you.

  • incredible eyes

  • scary

  • Just think, she aged rapidly there. If she was here, she'd be on Oprah and Ellen and her fame would take her to her famous "Playboy"spread. Then she could do a few movies. She would dabble in a little Cocaine and/or her home countries Heroine. Then she would be broke.By then she would be homeless and a Porn Reqruiter would talk her into doing Porn for a few bucks, then she would be Shamed upon by her family and she would go deeper into Drugs. She would loose her looks and die an old Ragged woman anyway!

  • Just saying, the green in the background really made her eyes pop out.

  • She is as lovely as she was when the world first fell in love with her intense eyes.

  • amazing eyes. creepy ass look

  • @MizzDizzyLizzy79

Actually everything in ones' head can change, except the ears.

  • Can you imagine how she would look like if they brought her to the USA or other country ? Just little make up and nice cloth would change her tremendously ! What a pitty she stayed behind and she is a made to some retartted afgan men ! The sadness in her eyes says everything !

  • Islam the righteous path? Please whomever says that must be nuts!! Islam and Sharia Laws kills women. A woman gets raped and she must have witnesess? what a sick mind!!

  • @Mesalonika in the u.s.a in certain places authorities us that when a woman is raped also.

  • @Mesalonika:You know it applies to men also. Islam and Sharia laws protects its women as well as elevate us. A woman in Islam is much respected than. If one please the mother he/she has pleased the creator. In Islam a woman gets a share of her parent's property. NO other religion has given this right to women. A woman is free to work and earn money however, she is not responsible to contribute to the family expenses. If she does so, OUT OF HER free will, its consider a charity in front of God.

  • As a kid she was protected, as a Woman the taliban relinquish her to slavitude. Her eyes... haunting and beautiful. The taliban must not live. Had she lived in democracy she will still be one of the most beautiful ones on heart. My opinion she looks repressed of her being( solely my opinion).

  • poque se hizo tan famoso esta imajen?

  • she is so beautiful!

  • @TheAnibas1983 En mi opinion for sus OJOS, son impresionantes. Melancolicos, romanticos, eternos, misterio y claridad. Claro y Oscuro.

  • It seems that her eyes tell a story. I can feel the energy still coming out of these green oceans .

  • the moment they show her face, I turned off the volume. I thought something will pop out.

  • @Outsider2000 Me too, for some reason!

  • Her eyes are green like the jungle, amazing! eyes are the only part on our face that does not grow as we age, her eyes are still beautiful...

  • omg, no make-up and she was still hot :D

  • @IzUalKarbad XD haha she's twelve in the famous picture

  • @VelvetSynclaire oh... emmm... you can still be hot at twelve :)

  • Over 20 years later in that environment we would look hard as well.

I'll never forget that photo back in the 80's. Awesome eyes, photo was worth a thousand words. She should have gotten wealthy from that photo.

  • looks like she's had a hard life but her eyes are still as beautiful as ever

  • the most prettiest girl in the world better then pina

  • how a harsh life can wear on you. but she has wisdom like no other in those eyes, and strength and courage. if she had been in the u.s. where we tend to be rather spoiled and not realize it, imagine the life she would have had. this is a really strong woman inside and out. you can just see it! she has more courage and strength than most i bet. my heart goes out to her i can only imagine how hard her life and many others' are in harsh countries. God bless.

  • this is the picture that made me want to be a photographer as a kid .....im 43 now and i am a photographer....it marked my life

  • most beautiful eyes are somale-deep set mysterious

  • i hate to say it, but she got ugly :C

  • @gaspar30 i would like to see you later.Everyone get ugly with age not matter how cute you look now.

  • @Miranda7776 lol no way, my mum is older than her and she's gorgeous....

  • @Miranda7776 well good for you then.

  • @Miranda7776 not entirely true.. some women still look extremely attractive when they're old. Unfortunately for Sharbat, she is not as "pretty" as she was when she was younger. Also, she had three kids and I'm sure her life is very stressful, so it's not so bad.

  • and she got NOTHING for her being SO famous

  • 17 years later, she still looks angry.

  • she's beautiful!!! her eyes are stunningly beautiful and captivating... it's deep, like it said "haunted and haunting" it tells a story and full of mystery.... it's like getting through deep.... it giving me goosebumps!

  • I think its not the same woman. Look how pointed her nose is in the older pic. Plus her nose looks a little smaller. Hard to imagine since she obviously gained weight and her nose should be slightly bigger along with the rest of her face. I just think this is a woman that had similar green eyes.

  • @peilthetraveler you know as you get older your face or your body change... she was so young she was only a little girl when that picture was taken

  • Those eyes.....

  • she looks a hell of a lot older..hw old can she possibly be? 30 at most..shes lookin towards 50,,damn thats sad how u can get so weathered off stress and war so quickly.

  • she looks wild... like a wild cat caught

  • Where is this music from??? I think I've heard it in a movie...

  • she changed alot, it's like the older woman isn't her,...

  • The face is so beautiful and this image says 1000 words or more :) It's amazing how out of such horror and such violence can come images of such strength and beauty!

  • @mxisalife

Yes. I agree with you. Its almost as if 30+ years of war has enriched my people with strength, hope and intensity more than it has resulted in distruction. You can see the emotion...the angst in her eyes, that yearning for change...that enough is enough, so much so that it haunts you....Ironically, It's like all the trials and tribulations of war that she's been through has resulted in her emmense beauty...It's really hard to explain.

  • I remember this picture as a child,I wondered about her,her eyes how ever was unique I had never seen such eyes before but It did haunt me well I wondered who was this person..It's really great to find out who she is.

  • Jodida toda su vida....Deberia de darnos vergüenza y no jubilo el que la encontraran en la misma situacion que de niña..

  • OMG, her eyes are so captivating! It's not just the color-it's the look in her eyes!

She is sooo beautiful! t's so hard to find a true beauty today.Sharbat Gula is way ahead of every Hollywood "beauty".

  • unusual and rare beauty...

  • Such an iconic photo, and to the idiot people on hear making comments about muslim suicide bombers etc, u fools, the afgan people have been invaded by the russsians the US and us brits, i'd strap some semtex to myself if someone killed my family because of an unjust cause, the afgans are the toughest people on the planet, I'm white English by the way the tue evil of this world are the bankers who run the American goverment and the Nazi's from within the CIA

  • @scotty4fingers

Thank you for recognizing humanity before nationality.

  • I saw the documentary about the photographer who went to find her..it was really something!

  • No need for all that high technology to match the irises. You can just tell it's the same person by the shape of the eyebrows, the eyes, the nose, the lips; everything is the same, except for the shape of her face, that with normal ageing, has become more full and weathered through time and difficult life conditions. What strikes me about this story is that those photographs were the only ones ever taken of her until the same photographer returned.

I wish her and her family all the best....

  • dam you taliban, let these people get on with there lives. let them rebuild, stop gassing school children and stop suicide bombing innocent civilians you barbaric savages!

  • pure, untouched beauty. no make up, no photo shop, no tricks. what a stunningly gorgeous girl.

  • @adudenamedrf yeap n how she looks now is not her fault...living in a warzone country..wud u take care of ur beauty or ur children??ryt??lolx...

but if she took care of herself like our hollywood starrs take care of them..i think she wud have been a masterpiece

  • I want her eyes, i have brown eyes /: lol

  • just shows no matter how pretty your wife is one day she will look like her mother .

  • @blobby1972 - She looks haggard not because of her age, but because she's been oppressed by a bunch of fanatical pedophile child raping sick mofos posing as men over there. She's only in her 30s

  • @JamesTKirkCobain thats no way to speak of your brave army they are trying to help them ...

  • @blobby1972 LOL thats not even her and there was 2 of them one had blue eyes and one had green there was 2 editions made to see if people could distinguish between the 2 and bring light to the situation going on in Afghanistan nobody ever heard from them agian they most likely died, compare the nose and lips and you'lll see its not the same person..

  • @blobby1972 YEP...CUZ GIRLS, WOMEN ARE HUMAN BEINGS TOO AND WE AGE...LOL

  • Unforgettable

  • yes life is hard...but the west thinks that afganis arent human so you keep pounding them with bombs..fear is like torture...look at the hard years in her life...

  • It's such a shame she turned out so worn and beaten after all those years. She was so beautiful before and since they found her that light in her eyes just isn't there anymore. And for having only been 30 when they found her again, it was surprising to see that youthful looks weren't either. Shame shame.

  • She is striking at any age, with such eyes.

    Glad to know she survives.

  • this video and these pictures speaks about the war (any war). Its not about belief, faith not even religions. Those eyes telling you a story about pain and fear. I could show you one picture from the WW and you could recognize the same eyes. War crashing your body and your soul and that is something what nobody can hide.

  • It is sad to see such beauty get wasted away behind a ugly piece of cloth, many muslim woman are abuse, disfigure and torture by their own husbands, every year and no one to talk their sorrows,go try Christianity you have nothing to loose, even your soul will be with God if someones harm you any way God bless you all ways.

  • @tubetub0 Islam is the righteous path, islam gives complete rights to Females, but the problem is this that, we the Muslims are not completely following it now adays, If we Follow Islam, then You non Muslim's will see, the true power of Islam...
