If you actually need help getting strumming of the intro Then you shouldnt be playing joe's stuff yet...

Stuff like this should come by ear not by leasons..

The Harmonics and so on makes sense.. But the beginning you should have just skipped it

Pick the open string that he's describing. Then lightly touch (left hand) that open string at the fret he's telling you too.

I'v got a question, are you using harmonics with your left hend by nearly touching the strings or with right hend and touching strings after picking them? (sorry for my bad english;p)
