I will not be able to have the brains to do the tanning what can i use to tan it with? Ive read many ideas but not sure how to apply to a HAIR on hide. like i don't know what kinds of oils i can use, or egg mixtures, and could i use the ivory soap method u had in one of your other videos? will any of these harm the fur on the hide if used. Sorry if my questions seem a bit far fetched but they seem to cling to my mind and i hope im not too much of a bother. thanks in advanced.
its a sharp scrape tool for leather working, to thin down and carve out thickness. But if you didn't know what it was then I suppose you wouldn't use it for this videos purpose. Thanks for getting back to me so fast! Love your videos!!!!!!
when you brain tan, does it provide a water proof tan or will it start to decompose if it gets wet? How long doest it take for the brains tp tan the hide?
Hi there, excellent videos and channel. Enjoying it very much. Do you have a video showing the end result? In Northern Canada, we brain tan, also known as "Native Tanning" and one pelt or hide can take many hours of working the solution in. "Northern Trapping & Off Grid Life"
how long does the softening process take? Great video and hands down one of the best subs I have done. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us.
Very helpful and educational video you are a smart man at what and how you do your skinning and tan skill , keep up the good work you helped me learn something new today , thank you!
@BCRachelReed So if i shoot a coyote and take it to a taxidermist to have him tan it to hang it up in my room should i cut the fur down the belly or not?the first coyote i got i cut down the belly and my friend said i did it wrong
@bjizzle123 just work it until it dries. It takes a few hours but you just stretch it with someone sitting across from you by pulling on it until it dries. When dry you can string up a cord on a tree vertically and run the hide back and forth on the line until it is as soft as you want.
if you were not in a survival situation, you just wanted to tan this fur for the fun of it, could you add an egg or something like that with oils into the tanning solution? ive heard of people basically using anything that contains oils to soften a hide.
This is a very helpful video, and I appreciate it. But where do you get the coyote?? I've walked through walmart I know about 10 times, but no coyote. Friends say you gotta call em. but i dont know the number. help??
Hey great video, but I'm really just starting with this type of thing, and I'm a bit confused about what you mean when you say start the softening process, what do I do for this part? Because i do want is soft but I'm not sure what to do for "softening". Thanks.
@livewire231 when you have worked the braing into the skin you must keep pulling and working the skin in your hands to get it soft dont stop till dry and soft .
@BCRachelReed so when sou say pulling and working it in in your hands does that mean that the coyote skin should be removed from the board? i to am just starting at this sort of thing and i plan on going night hunting with my grilfriend in about a week or two. i would like you to be real specific in terms of the softening process if you can because id like to make sure i do it the right way. thanks
After the solution is worked into the hide, then while pulling in all directions, watch for the change in colour, it will begin to turn white, and that's the magic of it. Don't give up, it takes a long time. "Northern Trapping & Off Grid Life"
@PleoJSO you dont need to salt a skin if your tanning with brains salt is used to preserve the hide and draw out the water thats in it . so have fun keepon tanning .
Im having my cows slaughtered tomorrow and I want to brain tan the hides hair on for rugs...how do I get the hide soft again after it has dried with the brain solution on it?
@ugkcdrock hey thanks you strip the bone out of the tail and you can split it or leave it whole i put 20 mule teame borax in the tail to help perserve it .
nice video man, i have been looking for a tanner that uses the brains, so let me get this right, you take all the fleshy parts off the do the brains bit once? it looked like there was quite a bit of red stuff on the out side of the skin, will that matter if its used as clothing? also what do you work the skin to keep it from going hard, i want to keep it soft and usable.thanks for the cool video im gonna sub you as i like your videos =)
@mrbobdog261 yep you have to scrape off all the flesh this skin was blood shot you have to soften the skin by hand thats where people quit because they wont go the time neeeded to compleate the jobas the skin dries after you have applied the tanning brains or what ever you use you keep on working the skin till its soft . use 80 grit sand paper after its soft to smooth it up . if its a little discolered us bleach water and a spoung to clean it up.
@BCRachelReed do you use any oils on the skin to soften it up after it dry's too make it like cloth flexible so can be used as clothing?i was gonna try Krowtann 2000 do you think it will be ok? its my first time ;)
i plan on using this with a deer if it works with one. once youve added the brain mixture, and you stretch it, you kept mentioning dont let the hide get stiff. when do you know it is ready? lets say i stretch it and twist it, when do i know it is ok to stop?
What would you do to store it to work on it at a later time? I was told to by a local tanner to stretch and salt it. Let it dry as quickly as possible. then just soak it before scrapping. Is that what you do? Thanks
@raguspag55 hey you can do that i will strech mine and put on 20 mule team borak let dry and store borak keeps the buggs out thanks for for the comment .
@AussomPossum thats a homade scrappre i made out of a puddy knife . thanks the sofeting is done like i do my deer hides check out my vidieos on makeing buck skin thanks gaain
So basically if I want it soft I just continue working the hide, say on a wire like you mentioned before, and keep working it until it dries in my hands? And if I go straight to that softening process will it scrap the brains off the hide? How long should I wait between rubbing in the brains and working it on the wire?
one other tip i read is about the brain process. for those of you who dont want to work with critter brains or threw out the brains before realizeing you need them, one dozen beaten eggs will also do the trick. also, dont get brains on the hair side! (or eggs). i tried brains once before not worrying about it getting on the hair. completly ruined my first beaver hide :( hair everywhere. Thanks alot for the video Mike, this is very helpful. i will def give this a go the next time i get a chance.
this video helps alot! thank you very much. couple suggestions to other folks interested, through research ive found it ALOT quicker to flesh the hide by draping it over a 6" diameter pvc pipe. The top of the pipe should be waste level and the bottom pinned to the ground. the pipe should be long enough to form and slight angle. pin the hide between your waste and pipe. using a dull draw knife, push down into the meat. cut hours of work into ~30 mins for a deer. Happy hunting to you!
I used only laundry detergent and baking soda washed the hide let it sit for 8hr or so in it. stretch it and salted it and let it dry for week. used some of that stuff your girl friend used "lotion" on her legs and wallah a nice coyote fur . Although i am a red neck.!! It worked well. Also air skinning works well not much flesh on my hide. All of this i learned off of youtube. thanks for the videos

If you had a blender instead of a stick would you use it on the brains? Just wondering if its' better to have brain chunks or brain puree`? Thanks for posting. I learn at least 1 new trick from yu each time.
