  • i think when i skin squirrels i pull the skin from the bodie i dont really think theres any flesh on it...

  • that coyote was smart

he had brains enough to tan himself

  • so if i want it soft i just keep rubbing the brains? wont it have to dry eventuly? wen do i know to stop?

  • @Bombompop100 when dry and soft

  • @Bombompop100 when its soft the way you want it

  • how far away do you think i should shoot a coyote with a .22lr....it is legal in my state i just want to know how close i need to be to kill it

  • @cheeselyman 100 yards

  • I will not be able to have the brains to do the tanning what can i use to tan it with? Ive read many ideas but not sure how to apply to a HAIR on hide. like i don't know what kinds of oils i can use, or egg mixtures, and could i use the ivory soap method u had in one of your other videos? will any of these harm the fur on the hide if used. Sorry if my questions seem a bit far fetched but they seem to cling to my mind and i hope im not too much of a bother. thanks in advanced.

  • Nice work!

  • Does the hide actually stay soft like buck skin ? Caught many critters this year and all I do is flesh them out. Would love to make them soft.

  • its a sharp scrape tool for leather working, to thin down and carve out thickness. But if you didn't know what it was then I suppose you wouldn't use it for this videos purpose. Thanks for getting back to me so fast! Love your videos!!!!!!

  • can you show how to smoke the hide?

  • @cDog8766 sew it up and do it just like the deer skin i have a vid up on that allready thanks

  • can you use a leather skive?

  • @Grlypants i dont know what that is friend

  • when you brain tan, does it provide a water proof tan or will it start to decompose if it gets wet? How long doest it take for the brains tp tan the hide?

  • @mihoghunter tanning dont water proff smokeing will or some kind if oil i use miniral oil most of the time thanks for asking

  • @BCRachelReed Thanks for the quick reply. I appreciate it.

  • @mihoghunter

Hi there, excellent videos and channel. Enjoying it very much. Do you have a video showing the end result? In Northern Canada, we brain tan, also known as "Native Tanning" and one pelt or hide can take many hours of working the solution in. "Northern Trapping & Off Grid Life"

  • @campfirepoetry Not my video bro. You need to repost your comment to BCRachelReed they're the ones that made and posted it.

  • man i wish you were my dad!!

    you rule!!!

  • Could i use mayo instead of the brains?

  • @paidskn1488 i dont know never tried it.

  • nice vid. how did you go about splitting the skull?

  • @zachcapp with a old hand saw

  • how long does the softening process take? Great video and hands down one of the best subs I have done. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us.

  • @CannibalCarp 8 hrs

  • How would you go about tanning if you skinned it without the large incision down the belly? You will have a tube shaped pelt.

  • @sketchystreet thats called case skinning and you tanthe same way

  • and this would work for other pelts and hides ja?

  • @dogbone222 yeppers ity will you can do it and thanks for watching

  • @BCRachelReed thanks a bunch

  • Fastest skinning I've EVER seen. Thanks for the vid.

  • Very helpful and educational video you are a smart man at what and how you do your skinning and tan skill , keep up the good work you helped me learn something new today , thank you!

  • @TopRamenKing thanks for your comment have a great day

  • good video

  • Have you ever used the Mayo and egg mixture to tan?

  • @WilliamTomFrank no sure havent

  • What is it in the brains that tans the hide?

  • @Clintdoak i dont know but it works thanks for asking

  • @Clintdoak

Hi, we believe it's the lecithin in the brains. You could also use egg whites, which also contain lecithin. "Northern Trapping & Bush Life"

  • does any animal brains work

  • @bryce21 you bet they do this is what the old timere used .

    merry christ mas

  • If a moose hide got dried out before I got it completely fleshed can I just resoak it to finish fleshing?

  • @unnet1 thanks for asking you sure can are you doing hair on or off ?

  • @BCRachelReed I would like to keep the hair on. It's a beautiful hide I got just four days ago

  • I was told your not supposed to cut it down the belly??

  • @fishnkid1923 open is not for fur buyers but if its for me any thing goes .

  • @BCRachelReed So if i shoot a coyote and take it to a taxidermist to have him tan it to hang it up in my room should i cut the fur down the belly or not?the first coyote i got i cut down the belly and my friend said i did it wrong

  • @fishnkid1923 do you want a open or closed skin you should case skin first and you and then talk it over .

    merry chiistmas

  • Hey guys! We live in Bland Co and just skinned a coyote today! Imagine our surpise when we found this video from Bland Co. LOL! Great video guys!

  • @howlermouse thanks for watching have agreat day

  • If you don't have brains could you just take a couple eggs crack them mix them up and apply them like you did in the video?

  • @Pieceshtcar97 sure can have a great day keep on tanning

  • @Pieceshtcar97

Have you tried it with the entire egg? We know it works with just egg white. "Northern Trapping & Off Grid Life"

  • dont let it get dry?

how long do you need to work it and keep it soft until it cures up for use?

  • @bjizzle123 you go it have a great day

  • @bjizzle123 just work it until it dries. It takes a few hours but you just stretch it with someone sitting across from you by pulling on it until it dries. When dry you can string up a cord on a tree vertically and run the hide back and forth on the line until it is as soft as you want.

  • thnx a lot 4 the help man!!

  • out of all the tanning videos on youtube, I finally found one that makes sense and shows most of the full process. Thank you!!!

  • (comman citizen): hey what you got there.... OMG

tanning a coyote and slapping its brains on its hide.

    now that is fucking metal!

  • one guy took fur off!

  • if you were not in a survival situation, you just wanted to tan this fur for the fun of it, could you add an egg or something like that with oils into the tanning solution? ive heard of people basically using anything that contains oils to soften a hide.

  • @CountryCollaboraters you sure can thats putting sulfer in the skin .

    have a great day .

    mike

  • This is a very helpful video, and I appreciate it. But where do you get the coyote?? I've walked through walmart I know about 10 times, but no coyote. Friends say you gotta call em. but i dont know the number. help??

  • @Lilpiecesofmnmz hey great deals come on the high way all the time so have at it .

    mike

  • Hey great video, but I'm really just starting with this type of thing, and I'm a bit confused about what you mean when you say start the softening process, what do I do for this part? Because i do want is soft but I'm not sure what to do for "softening". Thanks.

  • @livewire231 when you have worked the braing into the skin you must keep pulling and working the skin in your hands to get it soft dont stop till dry and soft .

    mike

  • @BCRachelReed so when sou say pulling and working it in in your hands does that mean that the coyote skin should be removed from the board? i to am just starting at this sort of thing and i plan on going night hunting with my grilfriend in about a week or two. i would like you to be real specific in terms of the softening process if you can because id like to make sure i do it the right way. thanks

  • @blootoons you and your girlfriend start pulling the wet hide like its a peice of rubber.

in all dercitions till soft .

    have a great day.

    mike

  • @blootoons

After the solution is worked into the hide, then while pulling in all directions, watch for the change in colour, it will begin to turn white, and that's the magic of it. Don't give up, it takes a long time. "Northern Trapping & Off Grid Life"

  • when you put salt on skin?is brain goes after salt same day? Pleaseee answer :)

  • @PleoJSO you dont need to salt a skin if your tanning with brains salt is used to preserve the hide and draw out the water thats in it . so have fun keepon tanning .

    mike

  • @BCRachelReed Ohhh Man ,Thank you very much, please answer me on one more question, how to hair stay soft? Please answer me ,i will be very greatful!!

  • @PleoJSO shampoo the skin after tanning and blow dry .

    have a great day .

    mike

  • How come my mama use ta always say "Imma tan ur hide boy!"?

  • DAMN IT!!!!! I even knocked on wood :( TAKE IT BACK!!!!!!!! Oh well ... screw him, gj any ways.

  • @MrBowbalitic thanks for watching

  • Thank you survivor man! You taught me a lot about keeping warm in a survival situation.

  • @NarlepoaxIII no problem have a great day

    mike

  • I'm glad this has no negative views *knocks on wood* good video and nice instructions. Thank you.

  • @MrBowbalitic

1 dislike; you jinxed it. :(

  • Im having my cows slaughtered tomorrow and I want to brain tan the hides hair on for rugs...how do I get the hide soft again after it has dried with the brain solution on it?

  • @horseshochamp a rack and a whole lot of work better find you some help cause you gonna need it .thanks .

    mike

  • what do you do with the tail?

  • @ugkcdrock hey thanks you strip the bone out of the tail and you can split it or leave it whole i put 20 mule teame borax in the tail to help perserve it .

    keep on tanning .

    mike

  • nice video man, i have been looking for a tanner that uses the brains, so let me get this right, you take all the fleshy parts off the do the brains bit once? it looked like there was quite a bit of red stuff on the out side of the skin, will that matter if its used as clothing? also what do you work the skin to keep it from going hard, i want to keep it soft and usable.thanks for the cool video im gonna sub you as i like your videos =)

  • @mrbobdog261 yep you have to scrape off all the flesh this skin was blood shot you have to soften the skin by hand thats where people quit because they wont go the time neeeded to compleate the jobas the skin dries after you have applied the tanning brains or what ever you use you keep on working the skin till its soft . use 80 grit sand paper after its soft to smooth it up . if its a little discolered us bleach water and a spoung to clean it up.

    thanks .

    mike

  • @BCRachelReed do you use any oils on the skin to soften it up after it dry's too make it like cloth flexible so can be used as clothing?i was gonna try Krowtann 2000 do you think it will be ok? its my first time ;)

  • @mrbobdog261 you can use oil but it will feel cold and wet when its buckskin soft its likea wash cloth

  • Great video brother, very informative. What could you use besides the brains in terms of liquid

  • @Wildirishmanbiker you could use a bar of soap it works for me thanks for asking .

    mike

  • i plan on using this with a deer if it works with one. once youve added the brain mixture, and you stretch it, you kept mentioning dont let the hide get stiff. when do you know it is ready? lets say i stretch it and twist it, when do i know it is ok to stop?

  • What would you do to store it to work on it at a later time? I was told to by a local tanner to stretch and salt it. Let it dry as quickly as possible. then just soak it before scrapping. Is that what you do? Thanks

  • @raguspag55 hey you can do that i will strech mine and put on 20 mule team borak let dry and store borak keeps the buggs out thanks for for the comment .

    mike

  • could u show an extension of this video of how to soften the hide? im really interested in making a fur jacket and or hats and pants thanks again!

  • whats the name of that tool?

  • @AussomPossum thats a homade scrappre i made out of a puddy knife . thanks the sofeting is done like i do my deer hides check out my vidieos on makeing buck skin thanks gaain

    mike

  • So basically if I want it soft I just continue working the hide, say on a wire like you mentioned before, and keep working it until it dries in my hands? And if I go straight to that softening process will it scrap the brains off the hide? How long should I wait between rubbing in the brains and working it on the wire?

  • @ColonelMcBeige the brains will go through the hide let hang 1 hr or 2 then procede to the softing prosses.

thanks .work till dry and soft .

    mike

  • how do you soften it and for how long ? and do you smoke it to ?

  • @jacelyte there real thin i do it with 80 grit sand paper you can smoke if you want to . have a great day

  • how long does it take to dry

  • @MrHoustonsk8er not long if its a warm place with lots of air going around .

    have a good day .

    mike

  • You remind me of my family back east. Thank you for the good memories.

  • @aarondhp20 hey thanks for the good words let me know if theres something else you would like to see .

    have a good day .

    b c s m

  • thankn!!!

  • after rubbing hide with brains or eggs, at that point where he stopped, will the hide get hard or be soft, because i want a soft one???????

  • @offroadmobber good question eather one will tann a hide but you have to go to the soften process to make it soft.

put a small steel cable between to trees and pull the flesh side of the hide back and forth across it to make it soft . good luck.

    b c s m

  • @BCRachelReed after putting the brains on, do i go straight to the cable or do i wait, and after that am i done, thank you

  • @BCRachelReed let it dry for a while but not get hard then start working the hide they are easy to tear so be careful.

    have a good day

    b c s m

  • should the hide be cleaned after it is finished? or is it ok to leave the brain solution on the hide?

  • @fishstalker77 its ok once the hide takes the brain

  • one other tip i read is about the brain process. for those of you who dont want to work with critter brains or threw out the brains before realizeing you need them, one dozen beaten eggs will also do the trick. also, dont get brains on the hair side! (or eggs). i tried brains once before not worrying about it getting on the hair. completly ruined my first beaver hide :( hair everywhere. Thanks alot for the video Mike, this is very helpful. i will def give this a go the next time i get a chance.

  • this video helps alot! thank you very much. couple suggestions to other folks interested, through research ive found it ALOT quicker to flesh the hide by draping it over a 6" diameter pvc pipe. The top of the pipe should be waste level and the bottom pinned to the ground. the pipe should be long enough to form and slight angle. pin the hide between your waste and pipe. using a dull draw knife, push down into the meat. cut hours of work into ~30 mins for a deer. Happy hunting to you!

  • I was wondering... what do you do about the fleas, ticks, and other vermin that might be in the fur? Great video. Thanks for the info.

  • @ptpike1 flea powder

    have a great day

  • I used only laundry detergent and baking soda washed the hide let it sit for 8hr or so in it. stretch it and salted it and let it dry for week. used some of that stuff your girl friend used "lotion" on her legs and wallah a nice coyote fur . Although i am a red neck.!! It worked well. Also air skinning works well not much flesh on my hide. All of this i learned off of youtube. thanks for the videos

  • nice vid

  • so could salt be used instead of borax and the brains after you flesh it of course?

  • @snypermcgyper you bet but it wont keep bugs for eating the hide only soap of somekind will do that .

    have a great day .

    b c s m

  • nice door

  • will this work on goats and rabbits?

  • @TheMrsVolfie brains will tan any hide rember native people had what was on hand brains ant fat.

have a good day .thanks for watching.

    b c s m

  • @kidtrapper96 cooked brains wont work they have to be raw smells bad but works smoke after if you want but you will have to keep the hair hidden or it will get smoke on it .

  • @kidtrapper96 kid trapper allways use borax and it will be bug free thanks for watching.

    have a great day.

    b c s m

  • Great videos, love them all. I know you said to keep right going for a usable hide, but how do I know when its done? Eventually its going to dry. (I can't work forever, lol)

  • @waterwalker1001 hey when you like the way it feels your done .

thanks and have a nice day.

    b c s m

  • @SocialFever hey thanks for watching i enjoy doing them .

    b c s m

  • i just skinned three cyottes for the first time, ever (had help from a friend)

im using a tannin solution on two of them, and on one i'm experimenting with only using salt. (i did a deer n racoon with salt only, and so far they have not gotten stiff, but i "break" the hides fairly often

  • @FennecLuffer483 sounds like you are doing it right and you are learning to survive thanks for watching.

    b c s m

  • If you had a blender instead of a stick would you use it on the brains? Just wondering if its' better to have brain chunks or brain puree`? Thanks for posting. I learn at least 1 new trick from yu each time.

  • @MrBudwv mr bud you wont have a bleander in the wild . thanks for watching .have a nice day

  • @MrBudwv yea you can use a bleander but your wife will kill and tan your hide the brains wor k eather way try it you will like it.

    bcsm

  • @BCRachelReed Ok thanks.

  • Loved it, please show the finished product if you can.
