The "drawing" stage doesn't need to be too rigid or complete. It's going to be "damaged" by background. A very general idea, so that one can assess composition, is all that is needed. Sometimes, that's nothing more than a quick dab, a point, in four locations, marking the farthest boundaries of the object you're trying to place.
@Tang526 Thinner, as in odorless paint thinner, is bought as is from the art supply store. If you don't mean thinner, and instead mean medium, try this: 3 parts linseed oil, 2 parts English turpentine, 1 part damar varnish. Every artist eventually comes up with a "recipe" for medium that they like. A Google search will yield many. But try the one I gave you. I think you'll like it.

My art teacher told me to always put a midtone layer down with burnt sienna, burnt umber, and a tiny bit of black.
