Phil's backing vox are missed by the whole empire pool recording of the lamb show made
by the BBC. I'm not really sure whether I should be sad about this or not. But I sure do like the sound of his drumming as the BBC took it, compared to the weak sound on the so-called Shrine-fake on archives 67-75. What a pitty, that the BBC did not broadcasted
I will say Peter Gabriel sounds a little funny here but keep in mind, he was laying down while singing this song. So that certainly may have affected his voice.
The mark of a truly great band is how they perform live. IMO, Genesis sounds better live than in studio and this song is an example of that. I'm so thankful for these old recordings that I can listen to over and over again. It brings back great memories of when I saw them in the 70's.
they were all doing it but they had to move away from prog to follow the grain of the music industry, if not, they would of probably died out but they kept it fresh and vibrant :)
they had something good together and as for everyone blaming phil for peter leaving its not true, peter wanted to venture out on his own, phil didnt turn genesis into a pop band as some people call it, its just the direction they went, look at mike and the mechanics, look at some of tonys light hearted songs he brought out,
i dont get why people always try and compare phil and peter, like you are trying to score points for each of them, they are both exellent, im not too keen on any of the band as solo artists, , i think everything they did as a band up to we cant dance was brilliant even though the style leaned away from the norm
Good analysis on all three posts. The music industry was changing. And how could they have topped Selling and Lamb? They tried out many singers. Nothing was clicking, Phil tried and it worked out. I saw them at a signing at a record store probably for the first show for And Then There Were Three - right after Steve left. They were no sure thing at that point. They could have folded but they survived and did well. Not exactly my taste but give them credit for lots of great great music.
Come on Peter Gabriel is miles better. And on Phil's drumming being better, well Gabriel doesn't play the drums does he? For me Peter Gabriel is one of the greatest musical artists of all time...
Peter Gabriel started off playing drums as a kid. And that's why he always had the bass drum in front of him during Genesis performances to kick. So while he may not even be close to Phil as far as drums go, he is still a better musician. Peter can sing, play drums, flute, oboe, piano, and probably anything else u throw at him. Plus he knows how to put on a damn good show and give the audience their money's worth. Collins is a phenomenal drummer and a pretty good singer, but Gabriel wins by lots
@andyib632 Sorry to say, Peter does play the drums. But Phil plays them better. I just get so sick of people comparing the two artists. They are different people, and they are both excellent in their own right. They both brought something to Genesis. Peter chose to leave, which is sad, but I just don't compare. They are both great.
Some inquiries have been made from various postings throughout here for audio or video footage by Genesis from this era and I refer these people to contact you...

Agree with everything :)
I'm surprised at people who are willing to contest it. It's a bit of a jolt, to be sure.

I'm not agree at all Fskoti.
Indeed, Peter G is good, but Phil is a drum master.
Sorry, he was...
