What a lovely family s cene. Johnny Wisemuller, Who played Tarzan, in the 30s and 40s. Apparantly had, polio as a child. It is claimed, they put his legs in a barrel, and taught him how to swim. he later, became. 6 times olympic swimming champion. Thanks for posting. I love Lucy. LOL .
In 1952 and 1953, the US experienced an outbreak of 58,000 and 35,000 polio cases respectively. The first effective vaccine was developed by Jonas Salk in 1952. The 1954 study mentioned in the video eventually involved 1.8 million children in 44 states. The results were announced on April 12, 1955. The Salk vaccine was over 90% effective against poliovirus type 2 and type 3. By 1957 the number of polio cases fell to 5,600 and by 1961 only 161 cases were recorded in the United States.
Desi ARNAZ, Jr. (not Arnez!) was 15 in 1968 when he first played his mother's son, and Lucie ARNAZ played her daughter, on HERE'S LUCY, not THE LUCY SHOW.

It must have made her throat sore when she talked in that high Lucy Ricardo voice, especially when she had to project it out to a studio audience. I know if I try to talk for long in a high pitch, even at a normal volume, my throat feels strained.

Wow! It's funny to see such an old commercial, especially with Lucille Ball. Funny how the first time the kids were asked to say "Hi". it didn't go so well (it was edited down).
Two cousins of mine had polio; each became successful in their careers. One became a manager of a radio station; the other is a successful real estate salesman.
She entered a dramatic school in New York, but while her classmate Bette Davis received all the raves, she was sent home.
Married Desi Arnaz twice.
Lucy was obsessed with the game of backgammon. She had a backgammon table in nearly every room of her home and several around the swimming pool in the backyard.
Her favorite flowers were red and white carnations.
really? i always thought that she just married desi once in 1940, divorced him in 1960, and then married some guy named gary morton in the 1960s (i'm not sure what year it was.) when did she marry desi again?
Gary Morton, Lucy's second husband, was often referred to as "Mr. Balls" or "the man who lights Lucy's cigarettes."
When the Rolling Stones used an unflattering portrait of her in the gallery of women on the cover of their Some Girls album, Lucille Ball threatened to sue.
Lucy often said that her deceased friend Carole Lombard kept turning up in her dreams to offer marvelous advice.
You should see them now! Lucie is the finest of the foxes, and Desi Jr. became a real hunk. Lucy and Desi are smiling down from Heaven on them and all of us.
Oh, how cute are the kids when they say "hi" and "bye"? It's so sad how this beautiful family ended up. Lucy and Desi waited so many years to have children, and when they finally did, they had no time to spend with them because of their work. They also spent a decade trying to work together so they could be together, and when it finally happened, the pressures ruined their marriage. But there was so much love there. You can see it in every appearance they made on film.
Adorable family! It's hard to imagine how bad the marriage was. I'm not used to Lucille being serious, I was waiting for something funny to happen. She was stunningly beautiful!
can't imagine that there are so many young Desi and Lucy fans even to this day, Lucy will never go out of style. We all just love her, Desi loved her to the very end and she loved him, I'm sure they are together right now.
yepp. Im 14 and Lucy and Desi are my utter idols along with Bea Arthur (rest all their souls)
Barely any people know who desi is and than I 'splain it to them. (lol) But they all know who Lucy is! Lucy was and is an iconic pioneer figure. In this commercial, and i've noticed on here that alot of people are saying that they sound fony. Probably bcuz their reading a teleprompter. But Lucy and Desi loved their children. I love them both <3
Aw this makes me sad. Desi ended up cheating on Lucille and they got a divorce and then they all eventually died. It was real sad, but The show is always going to be one of my favorites.
I grew up watching "I Love Lucy" reruns in the 70s. As far as I'm concerned, she is the greatest comedienne of all time. I can't imagine anyone watching her performances and reacting negatively. How do you not love Lucy?
You're right. I'm a teen too and I was talking with some of my friends and brought up lucy's vitameatavegamin skit and they were all like, is that from the Hallmark audio card? To which I could only roll my eyes.
This was a great clip. I have always liked seeing celebrities plug worthy causes as this one was (polio). I have read Lucille Ball was only comedic in her roles, but a very serious businesswoman in real life, and Desi was certainly an innovator and businessman as he proved with his ideas/input for the I Love Lucy shows. The kids are adorable. Also read Lucy was crazy about her kids. I also felt though the marriage was ended, they still loved each other. Very nice clip-thanks for sharing it.

Lucy and Desi had genuinely high regard for each other, so it is likely the love they show here is quite real. It is worth noting that this mutual respect lasted well past the break up of the marriage and into later life.

One thing that's important to remember is really how serious polio was in the early 1950s; it had an outbreak that spread to 60,000 people in 1952.
Since 1980, fewer than 10 people a year have contracted the disease in the U.S.
