  • I used to watch thiz, Rock Concert, Soul Train, Supersonic...Night Flight....gossh there were lots of shows: maybe l,ipsync maybe live as well as Mike Douglas, Dinah Shore, lots of chances to see everyone fron Funkadelic to Bowie! And Ed Sullavin/other primetime shows-too bad acts now don't have the same opportunity to find an audience nor do folks now have the ability tosee such a myriad of choices.

  • No autotune..no backing track...the way it should be.

  • It's so sad to think of how we have a tendency to take for granted such things as good music. As a kid I just always assumed that it would be there and that it would even get better then it already was. Do you realize that this MIDNIGHT SPECIAL show turned out multiple performances week after week for a number of years? If we had a show like that today, I wonder if they would be able to have it booked every week. If so , it certainly wouldn't be with talent like this.

  • this was music ... damn, no one CLOSE to this today

  • I've always loved Tom Johnston's voice. It doesn't hurt that he's easy on the eyes.

  • So good to see and hear these songs from the early 70's!! Some of the best times of my life!!!

  • Looks like one person clicked the wrong thumb by accident ^ ^ ^

  • @CityGov They weren't listening to the music.

  • I am addicted to this song!!!!!!! I wish I was born back then :o(

  • @TheDollyRA You would have loved it. What a great time. Nothing like today!

  • I hear quite a few DB stuff play on my local oldies and classic rock stations but this song, long train running, and what a fool believes are tied for my favorite. I really like the guitars and the guy's voice/ vocals on this and long train running(the harmonica too), and the keyboard(or piano) and Michael's voice/vocals on what a fool believes

  • feelin good feeling fine

  • Two drumsets are better than one.I love classic rock. it's the only good thing to listen to these days.

  • @Aerokings I still think the second drummer was only contracted to wear that hat. ;)

    Damn this rocks....

  • Great trip down Memory Lane, what a time to grow up this music. Great post, thanks for sharing. Feels like meeting an old friend again.....

Btw, I wish ppl would stop compare great music to Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber etc here on YT. They are certainly not my cup of tea, but let ppl who like them in peace please.

I just hate it to stumble across their names at so many vids I like.

  • good honest song craft, musicality, musicianship, singing, a real band.

  • THIS FREAK LOOKED AND SOUNDED LIKE EVERYTHING A HIPPIE SHOULD.

  • awesome tune

  • one of the greatest LIVE rock n roll bands EVER!!

  • I've seen hundreds of rock shows & have come to expect far less musical prowess live, but the Doobies still sound great in concert, as do Chicago, Kenny Loggins, Benator, Heart, EarthWind&Fire, Tower of Power, George Thorougood, Moody Blues and some others on the oldies circuit. I suggest you skip Steve Miller, Gary Wright, Foreigner, & Argent -- the most disappointing of such performances.

  • saw the doobies last night at jones beach for the first time !! great band great show !!!!!

  • Oh my, the quality of this is just fab! Thanks for posting, I remember sitting in my Mom's den watching this on the Midnight Special. I have been lucky enough to see them perform twice since. Makes me smile. =0)

  • Who is singing? Just wondering. o:

  • @GaronHD Tom Johnson

  • @TheMattyc1957 Thanks man.

  • @GaronHD Patrick Simmons

  • Absoutely one of the greatest rock bands that has ever been. I've seen them 5 times over 38 years since my freshman year at the University of Arkansas in 1973 at the old Barnhill Fieldhouse. Blew me away! From the bay aread of San Fransisco where Tower of Power, Credence Clearwater and other great bands came from . It must be something in the water there 'cause rock music in SF is unbelievable.

  • @gtrslngnhairbag yeah but they are rumors, but i think it might be true.

  • @BrooksRobby5 Only if the Skunk bit down hard!! lol........Wolfman's been dead since July 1st 1995, heart attack got him.

  • @BrooksRobby5 The Wolfman is dead dude. lol

  • Where's the "Skunk"??

  • @455Transam Skunk wasn't in the band until a few albums later

  • @gtrslngnhairbag he must have done session work with the Doobies......I saw him in a video with them that was dated 1973.

  • muzzmatrix- The Doobies had so many complex percussion parts that they needed two drummers and almost always doubled up on more normal parts of their songs. It really made a difference in the live shows!

  • Why two sets of drummers?

  • Comment removed

  • This recording is totally live. They were very tight.

  • Almost 40 years ago and still a monster performance. Top drawer.

  • who is the lead singer on this, nice voice.rock on doobies

  • @auggdogrules Tom Johnstone.

  • How 'bout that Tiran Porter, eh?

  • This video has that warm vinyl sound to it. I love it

  • Whatever happened to real music! Fuck!!

  • not to quibble, but this does't seem to be live, it's the studio version dubbed?

even so, lovely to watch - thanks

  • @ben909ben Definitely live. No question. Every nuance in that record is embedded in my brain. This ain't no record.

  • @ manualLaborer def leppard is not even on the same level of awesomeness as the doobies

  • why the hell do they have 2 drummers? the def lepard guy only has one arm... lazy sons of...

  • @manualLaborer It's their groove. See, they "compliment" one another. The Allman Brothers Band has two drummers, as did The Grateful Dead...It's not about head banging, it's about the groove. Have you ever been in a drum circle? Apparently not. Maybe you'd understand, if you'd just stop boppin' your head up and down while pumping a fist in the air, and actually learn how to "listen to the music."

  • @actormanic the last drum circle i was in was an undiscovered tribe in africa. after smoking doobies. with my brothers. unfortunately that band name was taken.

who said anything about head banging? had i said "satanic death metal", perhaps... associating that with def lepard indicates significant misalignment with music culture. if drum circles are that isolated from basic understanding of def lepard and head banging, lay off the doob, brotha.

*smacks you across the face* <-lawrence welk style

  • just listen to the music....no need for people to argue and complain about the world.

  • Although this was recorded 4 years before I was born, great music transcends all time. This is music the way it should be.

  • classic

  • Love the dual drums.

  • Great quality video, awesome song, and hey, the lead vocalist doesn't even look that high! Nice work man.

  • @starwocher, Thanks man! I really apreciate it.

  • @trubufo great chops!

  • Never assume someone's death; Quicksilver Messenger Service is minus three members because of death.

  • Tom Johnston was such a cool mutherfucker-

  • My favorite all time band and song! The first record I ever bought was "The Captain and Me" I think it was under $3

  • go doobies. the best of all times

  • Still rockin. the best of all times go doobies

  • They aint related but they do be brothers

  • Doobie Brothers - Listen To The Music

  • Any of these guys still alive? I thought they were all dead?

  • "Dammit man, the Doobie Brothers broke up?! Shit!"

  • I didn't know Brant Bjork was in the Doobie Brothers. OK so Brant obviously bit his style.

  • Classic

Burning rubber, cruising Main Street, listening to the Doobie Brothers

Thank you for this, it brings back a lot of memories

  • This is one of those songs that as soon as the first few cords are played everybody says Listen To The Music, Doobie Brothers! At least everybody from my generation.

  • Thanks for this video clip. Music in its pure state. What a sound!

  • The vocals are way difficult on this song and they pulled it off live!

  • First time I've seen this recorded live of Listen to the music, I love this classic! and this is what I prefer to hear it, in a very raw and casual gig.

  • The Doobie Brothers @ Brisbane Convention And Exhibition Centre

    Thursday, March 24 at 7:00pm, 2011

Brisbane Convention And Exhibiton Centre, Brisbane, Australia

  • Tiran rockin' the Rickenbacker.

  • the brothers-doobie

  • I can't believe people my age would rather listen to lady gaga when there's music this good.

  • @Icompgoeswild I love Lady Gaga....and this. :) And I'm 46.

  • @Icompgoeswild for real. in the car the other day with my 19 yr old niece, Isley Bros comes on the radio, she wants to change it to the nearest top-40 station.

  • @Icompgoeswild one of the reasons for that is that people now only want instant gratification they need the lyrics for a song laying right out there explained and not needing interpretation because that would probably be a little too much for them to comprehend at one time. I am in that group of teens with great taste in music me and like 6-10 friends were into the classic rock genre in High School

  • @Icompgoeswild how old are you... 9? 8D

  • @Icompgoeswild Whatever. I'm 46, been a rock fan my whole life and I think Lady Gaga is fantastic. But it's cool your respect old school stuff. My kids do too.

  • Where can i get that butterfly shirt

  • Wow... memories in my boyfriends room loosing my (well you know...) with this playing in the backround...

  • I'm listening right now! How cool is that?! :o)

  • Tom Johnston = one of rock's best vocalists...

    original Doobies line up...

  • Tom Johnston's hair = badass.

  • I had the pleasure of seeing the Doobie Brothers in 1997, along with Head East, Starship and Boston. I am a HUGE HUGE Boston fan. But honestly, the Doobie Brothers kind of blew them off stage. Awesome show!!!!

  • @ZXLNT i would have loved to see the orginal boston group sucks that we can't now :(

  • @ncs1988 Yeah me too. The lineup I saw had. Tom, Brad, Gary, David Sikes, and Curly I think. I dont remember if Fran Cosmo was there, that time, I dont think so..

  • @ZXLNT Thats not surprising. Doobies kinda blow everyone off stage.

The Doobies were and are primarily a live stage band. Boston spent years and years in the studio perfecting their sound. Doobie Brothers spent years and years on the road perfecting their sound.

But yeah I love them both!

  • Fantastic

  • These bass lines, melodies and harmonies will live on forever...

  • the ganja brothers. hehe

  • A melodia desta música é simplesmente magistral.

  • remember these are all baby boomers, theres no justin beaver here

  • My first concert...gr8 memories!!! Im 51 now, reflecting...

    good times

    rock and roll

    no worries

    Rock On

  • Great live version of a classic! Adding this to my rock playlist!

  • The most underrated band ever.. Should be mentioned as one of the top American bands ever. GREAT!!!!

  • Bunch of pot-smoking druggie hippies... and... MAN THEY WERE GOOD !!!

  • my fav. Doobies song! ty for putting this up!

  • Why do they have two drummers playing the same thing?

  • @alextirrell because one dosen't have skin, one has skin...

  • I saw the doobies with Joe Walsh in Philly a few years back. What a party!

  • ,,,, and they just got better and better...

  • Tom has an amazing voice

  • That's right, I can chew gum and sing like hell at the same time.

  • Are they using flange?

  • I got to see the Doobies in 1997 with Head East, Starship and Boston. I was there to see Boston, but damn, the Doobies almost blew them off the stage.... Their show was awesome!!!!

  • whats the thing on his head called

  • @missmarplefan It's a scarf, shaped as a bandana or "do-rag".

I assume it's functional, as Tom sweats alot, and it keeps the sweat out of his eyes.

And it does look awfully cool.

  • Yayyyy, I love this song :D

If only I'd been born a decade or two sooner =/

  • this song is freakin epic.......doobies were great live, though wished i did see them!!

  • They need a couple more guys on the chorus harmony here

(the "Listen To The Music" part) to match the sonic depth of the recorded version.

I never realized this, but while Tom Johnston sings the lead,

Patrick SImmons is singing the bridge.

    (the "Lazy flowing river" part).

  • IT only took Tom Johnston 15 minutes to write this song and wouldn't you know it became their biggest hit. Timing IS everything in life.

  • the lights flashing in the back ground.. so high tech! push ...ok push again ... now... now ... now .... only on now...now ... i mean when i say you now... not now... when i say it... you high fck!

  • @thewhoissuperb24 So very true my friend

  • classic Doobie Brothers.... great music like this will never come around again

  • Spot on!! Well said. I just wish I was born a couple of years earlier to "really" enjoy it!!

  • @classicNHLfights

    Until September 28th..........

  • @rubbersole79 - ???

  • just chill to this mega

  • jtg427, I appreciate your enthusiasm for the music you love, but the comment about people not being able to play and sing at the same time or play complex chords nowadays is just patently ridiculous. The nature of popular music has changed, the focus is on performers rather than creators. There are still a million awesome bands around, now it's up to the listener to seek them out because they don't get mainstream radio airplay.

  • Proper songs written by proper songwriters played by proper musicians - please bring talent back !!!!

Ian Taylor from East Yorkshire in uk

  • Hey "GHETTOPOPS79" Do you mean the singers left or the way we see its left??

  • Show me a current performer that can play and sing at the same time...oh yeah, they also have to play real chords and bluesy transitions.....good luck current performers....you wouldn't last 3 seconds with bands like the Doobies....God, I hate how things have progressed...I beg my kids to embrace classic music!!!

  • I agree with you!

  • jtg427:

I am in complete agreement with you.

    Guitar hero only creates guitards.

  • @jtg427 i can. except i play drums and do vocals.

  • I beg to differ, there are many excellent performers these days that can do exactly what you are saying and more. The problem is most of them aren't famous

  • Raw talent always touches the heart and soul....period!!!!!

  • Awesome.. I saw them with Starship and Boston in 1997. I am a die hard Boston fan, but honestly the Doobies blew them off the stage..

  • And no lip sync either!

  • As a life long rocker, music lover, music collector, guitar player, concert goer and song writer (I'm 48), I would have to say that music from the 60's and 70's were just pure magic, inspirational and awesome. There will never be a time like it, music will never be the same and yes today's music sux big time. Kick ass rock bands just came and went so fast. It's sad those magical times are over with. Long live rock music, kick ass blues based guitar solos and the Doobie Brothers! Rock me baby!!

  • @TheDudesterguy1

do not forget the great producers and the big studios where

they recored their music , today's music might lack

that spark and inspiration of an era long gone, but some how

there still rock and roll to make , only a few carry the talent

and performance wise to be a natural superstar but we all shine on

  • @TheDudesterguy1

    amen!

  • totally and completely agree with you. I too am a musician and classic rock lover pretty much all my life because todays music, with some exceptions of course, is trash compared to those golden times. I wish I would have grown up in the 60's or 70's.

  • @TheDudesterguy1 I'm 59 and I was there at all these live concerts. There will never be another late 60's or 70's, never. You nailed it, "magic", unique magic.

  • @latech1116 I'm 56 and saw them live in Melbourne (Australia) in 1976 as a 21st birthday present from my cousin.

We stood and danced in the aisles. Great fun.

  • @rednaxela40

I saw the Doobie Brothers last Month in West Palm Beach Kravis Center and they are performing in Australia (world tour) with their new released album" World Gone Crazy" One of their best records since the 70's

  • @rednaxela40

I saw the Doobie Brothers last Month in West Palm Beach Kravis Center and they are performing in Australia (world tour) with their new released album" World Gone Crazy" One of their best records since the 70's

  • @TheDudesterguy1 Amen!

  • @TheDudesterguy1 uhh maybe you havent actually taken the time to check out some of the lesser known modern bands since your stuck in the 70s, but when you decide to be more open minded, there's plenty of underground rock nowadays for those people who agree with you about the 60s/70s being the best (like me)

  • @TheDudesterguy1 I hear ya brother...I´m 48 too and know exactly what you mean *lesigh*

  • Two drummers? WTH!!! excellent song.

  • Times have changed. Now we have good looking people singing crap.

  • LOL. Amen!

  • GOOD MUSIC FOR THOSE YEARS

  • for all years man this kinda music stays around a lot longer then any the crap comeing out today, songs get old very fast nowadays

  • i am the first to comment this magnificent song!
