Stick a friggin sound control ring on it or sumthin will ya - so bloddy echoey, and your even running an EC2 head (which i run on my Yamaha kit, but sounds a heap better).

I tap the head while turning the key, not stop and turn the key, then tap the head again.

What about the resonant head? The batter head should be tuned for feel and the resonant head for pitch. Where did you get your credentials to teach? @pescalante2 the idea of torque tool /key is good. but what happen if one/ few of the bolt treads are a little messed up? messed up tread will make the bolt to be tighter, even though there is no actual tension. so using torque key might give you false tuning. i know this because my first drumset (crap) developed some rust. some of the bolts were tight even before it got tension.
