I'm married into this family. My husband is Janis' cousin. It is true, her high school class was terrible to her, luckily ppl treating her ugly only fueled her to rise above. She was from a VERY baptist family, not ripe conditions for a free spirit. :-) Certain Joplin "qualities" run in the family bloodline and I see that magic in my husband.
I heard they treated her pretty bad at that class reunion. Treated her terrible. I can't think if she came back to Cavett's show and told him about it but I know she was telling someone what happened and it wasn't a warm 'n' fuzzy experience for her.
In my opinion I don't think Kim Kardashian is that pretty. I rather people like Frances Bean Cobain. She's gorgeous. And I like Janis Joplin as well. So call me weird.
@astroboirap we all have our ghosts. by and large i listen to you tube so i can listen to the music i loved as a kid. janis had a tough life and it reflected in her singing. like many talented artists she turned to drugs. i don't know why they do but they do. that's why i don't judge her, just listen to her music
I think RedWolf got it wrong! Janis appears to be have been a victim of the HS bullies and clicks. What I hear her saying here is that she wants to go back to a very unhappy place to face her abusers and say, "No, I wasn't crap, it wasn't OK for you to treat me badly, Besides being hateful to those you don’t understand, what have you all done with your lives? Are you proud of yourselves?" I'll bet it was just another a very painful event for her. I hope before she died she experienced love.
from the interviews it is pretty obvious to me that janis just wanted amphetamines sex and to spite all who didnt give her atttention by getting as much attention as possible, but jim morrison was some kind of djinn using the doors as a front for a dark agenda
Man! Everytime I watch Janis I think it suxs that she died so young....wish she would have recorded more blues standards, like "St. Louis Blues" or "September in the Rain". Such a loss. When I was a young kid (early/mid 70s) all the cool kids talked like she does, then the vernacular disappeared. What happened to that language and approach to life?
That comment on her school days back fired as her parents and the town still treated her as she hadn't accomplished anythin she died a few mounths later, she couldn't get over that hump, sad, sad ,sad
JANIS SURVIVED A WORLD OF HATE AND ABUSE ONLY TO SHOWER THAT DESERT WITH LOVE AND SEE WHAT A GARDEN SHE GREW! All she wanted back was 1/1000 of the love she gave.
She was great and has a good sense of humour. She still lives in peoples hearts including mine. When I was 12 years old I would come home from school and listen to her music, well I'm over 50 now and still like her.
Well all i can say to the idiot thatcalled her a loser and freak is she probally made more money it her short career that yu will make in yur entire life yup wat a loser!!!!!!!!
@publicatdamagnificen I'm just stating my opinion. She looks like she just crawled out of a dumpster. She looks like a loser and a freak. I guess that's why she overdosed on drugs
@rudemood2011 No.....The reason why she left Texas was because of people like you. No matter how big a ''loser'' someone is, that's no reason to go after them....Just leave them alone!!
That reunion must have been such a triumphant blast for her. "You bitches all made fun of me in high school, and I'm fucking JANIS JOPLIN! SUCKAAAZZZ!"
@kowloon89 fuck all those assholes who treated her like a piece of shit!!!! like an outcast......she may have died too young, but she got the last laugh on ALL of them!!.....her name will live on!....she is the goddess of rock n blues and she will NEVER be forgotten!!....and who are they??...lol...that's right...who knows?...hahahahaha PEACE LOVE LIGHT AND RESPECT FOR YOU JANICE!!!!!!! <3<3<3
It's too bad she could never see herself as many of us do. She did more living in 27 years than many do if they live to be 3 times that...and here we are 4 decades later still appreciating her gifts...what a triumph for her. 8)
I love Janis, love everything about her.Love her music, style and her character. She was so intelligent and had a beautiful gift with her music. Its a terrible shame all that was cut short.Janis left us way to soon! I'd love being best friends with her. I was born 3 years after she died, which was 1973.
I never saw an interview with her either.I like her clothes. I am from Port Arthur too and went to school with her. We ate lunch together but she was three years younger than I was.
i heard that when she went to her high scholl reunion she was still teased and that she was really hurt by that. What a bunch of assholes,if this is true. I wish she would have just told them all off.
Great interview....she got to show how sweet and vulnerable she was. That pain expressed in her voice--Mr Cavett really did love her and her work and had her on his show often. Thanks for sharing this along with her performances.
Saw this on TV (D Cavett 1968-69)- I was a little girl! I remember thinking she has a deep sadness & trying to hide it. Interesting to watch now-see the same thing-but she looks so young (to me now). I like her music & "just do it" attitude! She died at age 27.
I am so sorry for the time and culture in which she lived which, understandably destroyed her. My god, they should have loved her more but now I see that they just exploited her. Don't enjoy her pain.
He refers to Brazil as if it was a jungle! This was the image he had about my country in 60', 70'. Janis was in Rio de Janeiro(Brazil) in 1970 and enjoyed it.
I remeber this interview from back in the day and I love it. Especially the bit about going to her High School Reunion (if I remember rightly she DID go back and rubbed their noses in it.)
they should make A moive on her life..i am 21 and i wasnt even born when she was at the top.but she is better than any other female artist today by far...
@TheRelger no she actually went ..there is an interview of her of it. it was really sad it almost sounded like she was about to cry when the reporter asked certain questions...
This clip makes Youtube worthwhile. Dick Cavett was a perfect talk show host. He let his guests be the star instead of hogging the spotlight. A rare talent, one not seen much these days. Janis was a surprise. Never have seen an interview with her before. What a difference. Well spoken and funny. Miss her all the more.. Wonder if she made it to her reunion.
I recall that she did... and it was an utter disaster for her. She showed up expecting to rub her popular success in their faces and they were just as mean to her. It didn't impress them that much in that backwater town, if she'd been a movie star it might have been different.... If she had let bygones be bygones then it would have gone a lot better. She got very depressed because of it. Perhaps she should have not gone in the first place.
damn right! go to your hs reunion and show those assholes what you've done with yourself. you go girl!lol. love janis soo much she was beautiful talented... she was just an all out wonderful woman
@Iaminthecloset You're kidding me right? By Janis Joplin creating the music she did, along with everything else, paved the way for Justin Bieber. Without Janis Joplin music today would not be the same. She is not even comparable to him. She is so much better than he is and has done a ton more than he will ever accomplish or think to accomplish.
she is very pretty and i never realised she could hav gone into commedy. She has great timing and a good speaking vioce. Dont forget, it was harder 2 get a drop dead outfit in them days
if you could do a genealogy test on Janis Joplin and go back a few hundred years ago before her family moved to America , i'm sure you'll find a point in time where her family lineage and Steve crocodile hunter Irwin's family once coincided. probably a couple hundred years ago in England . the resemblance is uncanny
(On going back to highschool reunion) hahaha.... ''Well, I don't have that many friends in your highschool class." 'I don't either. I don't either.. hahaha... believe me man. ...it's why I'm going!' hahahaha She's wicked.
Janis could never finish building her rocket sled. She always got bumped and jumped by the melting young people, and wore a napkin ring for luck. It didn't as much =, ya know?! Gazelles and ducks shut down in fall, but to be frank, won't you? Help is her zippiest dude dad.
She's my idol, never met anybody as real as her. She was real even about the subjects that hurt her the most. The world would be a much better place if more ppl were like her. One brave girl indeed.
Hard to belive she is in her 20s just ,there is a woman up the road is her double...no offence i try and avoid her cause she is boring and moans al the time about herself:(lol wee story with you there, sorry!!.
@MeshaDAllen I totaly agree. I was a guy back in the 60s. She had sex appeal to many guys back in the day. So very talented and a inner and outer beauty. If I had the honor, privelage and opportunity, I would have dated her in a heartbeat..
@azkiid damn you we're round in the 60's. That must have been something else. Were you into the whole Hippie thing? Are ya still a rocker? I was born around then (73) but that's not the same.
@scumgod13 Yes I was around in the 60s. I didn't consider myself a hippie even though I had hair down to my shoulders. Majority of youth in those days weren't what we would have called true hippies. That was media hype. But we for the most part enjoyed the same music , Big Brother and Holding Company ( with Janis Joplin),Jimi Hendrix. Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Cream, Iron Butterfly, and the list goes on. Another lady hot back then was Grace Slick. I still love rock.
@azkiid Well, even in my life time we always had so much music to choose from.My mom and stepfather came of age in the 60's. I step dad was kinda a full blown hippie, society drop out what have ya. I got into music in the late 70's as soon as I was old enough to reach the Phonograph. Then the 80's came more great music.I started playing in bout 85 (Bass)I still can't help but think I was born maybe 15 yrs late. What'd ya think when Punk came about?
I wonder if she ever made it to the highschool reunion? Hitch hiking in Northern Brazil. Wow!

She was soooooo young! I was too young to appreciate her when she was living, but have come to really get into her music as I've lived a bit.

if you could do a genealogy test on Janis Joplin and go back a few hundred years ago before her family moved to America , i'm sure you'll find a point in time where her family lineage and Steve crocodile hunter Irwin's family once coincided. probably a couple hundred years ago in England . the resemblance is uncanny

Janis could never finish building her rocket sled. She always got bumped and jumped by the melting young people, and wore a napkin ring for luck. It didn't as much =, ya know?! Gazelles and ducks shut down in fall, but to be frank, won't you? Help is her zippiest dude dad.

I think Amy Winehouse is sort of like the British version of Janis.

I feel like there was never a more real person then her. The world would be much better if more people were as honest as here.

She's my idol, never met anybody as real as her. She was real even about the subjects that hurt her the most. The world would be a much better place if more ppl were like her. One brave girl indeed.

MeshaDAllen 1 year ago 2
@MeshaDAllen I totaly agree. I was a guy back in the 60s. She had sex appeal to many guys back in the day. So very talented and a inner and outer beauty. If I had the honor, privelage and opportunity, I would have dated her in a heartbeat..

@azkiid damn you we're round in the 60's. That must have been something else. Were you into the whole Hippie thing? Are ya still a rocker? I was born around then (73) but that's not the same.
scumgod13 8 months ago
@scumgod13 Yes I was around in the 60s. I didn't consider myself a hippie even though I had hair down to my shoulders. Majority of youth in those days weren't what we would have called true hippies. That was media hype. But we for the most part enjoyed the same music , Big Brother and Holding Company ( with Janis Joplin),Jimi Hendrix. Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Cream, Iron Butterfly, and the list goes on. Another lady hot back then was Grace Slick. I still love rock.
azkiid 7 months ago
@azkiid Well, even in my life time we always had so much music to choose from.My mom and stepfather came of age in the 60's. I step dad was kinda a full blown hippie, society drop out what have ya. I got into music in the late 70's as soon as I was old enough to reach the Phonograph. Then the 80's came more great music.I started playing in bout 85 (Bass)I still can't help but think I was born maybe 15 yrs late. What'd ya think when Punk came about?
