@pappyfiddle : I think the "lack of technical skill" refers to ezz1951's daughters filming technic (I believe she was 9yo at the time). Eliza is pretty amazing.
The lip synch look is the good old youtube audio delay that plagues alot of older videos.
Anyway, I love this, thank you. The version she does with Oyster Band is good, but this is amazing! Better energy and feeling, for sure. If there only was a version like this with good sound quality I'd buy the CD for this song alone.
This is a totally gob-smacking version of this song. I have the "For pence and spicy ale" album, but this is a revelation. Don't you just envy her upbringing, LOL?!!!!! She's superb.
It's an English standard called " Country Life" available on "The Watersons" album called "For pence and spicy ale" onTopic records from 19075. Eliza ids the daughter of Norma Waterson who was on that album.

When are you and Martin going to make another collaborative album like Dinner? I've been playing that album on my radio show(s) on the berklee internet radio network for quite some time. I consider it one of my favorite folk albums of all time.
I saw Eliza Carthy do this song as part of the "Big Session" with the Oyster band - it blew me away, but its also great to see your film of her doing it with much less accompaniment - equally amazing! Thanks for posting
I love Eliza Carthy she rocks. A few years ago she came to my school Northcott School to do a concert she was so cool and so wild. We asked her questions at the end. Then I met her before I went home. And she talked to me and she gave me her autograph. I also have her on CD.
I adore this lady Eliza Carthy is beautiful and she is an incredible musician and singer. I could watch and listen to her for hours...going to see if I can find more video of her now...wel done and THANK YOU!!
She's incredible live, saw her two weeks ago with the Ratcatchers whom were equally awesome. Love her voice, so much better than Cara Dillon and Kate Rusby.
Yes, the "technical" comment was for the film maker. This is a very up front performance from Eliza, and a good one at that. Would love to see her do more of this sort of stuff. 10 out of 10.
Thanks for capturing the spirit and energy of this performance, never mind the 'technical' issue - you've captured something precious and special - I for one am very grateful.
I love this song. It's on The Big Session Volume 1 by The Oyster Band. I don't understand though who is lacking technical skill - definitely not Eliza. The daughter doing the filming me thinks!
Its not on The Definitive Collection; Rice or Heat Light & Sound. There are versions by other artists about. If you want a more modern vision of Country Life try the "Show of Hands" video, also on you tube.
I so love this, have the Watersons original on tape nothing to choose between, great

So, is this song an old country ballad or was it originally written by the Watersons?
jimmysherriff 2 years ago
An old English song.

Ah ok. Thought it would have been. Thanks.

When I watched this vid previously, the synch was 100% spot on... Youtube seems to have done something in the meantime - very odd.
Anyway... Absolutely fantastic - thanks to the poster's daughter for recording it!

Must be a way of converting file to something that re-establishes lip synch. This seems to be a common problem with youtube.
