Without mentioning Boring Dispatcher,Mike Skehan,Greg Solomon,Zen Archer,Pigslop,Dramatube,HellionExciter,BeeOBee,Coffeedude,Leafdude,Witzkeyman, etc. then you are not really portraying YouTube in the correct light. Those people and many more like them, are the reason that so many people
@Methadone4Life Did you check when this movie was made? Do you realize there are millions of people on YouTube? Do you realize their stories are very similar? Not everyone, who is on YouTube is a good subject for film.
i enjoyed this film. i've never heard of any of these youtubers b4 today. i was surprised people swarm fellow youtubers in public.
"Do you want to know how to become famous on YouTube and make money? Watch Butterflies now FOR FREE!" is a bit misleading IMO (luckily i didn't watch it for that reason), b/c this really only seemed to follow the 6 people & explain who they are, not explain any "secret" techniques to get more viewers. everybody already knows to be who you are and do what you enjoy.
This movie is like watching a Scary Movie. Those that are not even interesting. It's sad to know YouTube pays pennies on the dollar. My respects to Google, but don't the wealthiest people on this planet own this site. This video tells me alot of youtube video people. They can't live normal. Be normal people.People on this video (Movie) try to hard to live a normal life. I'm on 42 minutes. I'll tell you at the end of this movie if their has baen any interesting topics. So far their hasn't.
Wow this was a waste of an hour and 10 minutes of my life! The ad at the beginning was more entertaining! Do yourself a favor, and watch a documentary about the mating practices of the African stink beetle instead!
@tommyfhs04 why didn't you stop watching if it was such a waste? I think you are just a miserable lonely person that has to trash other people's good work to get some attention for the New Year. I really hope 2012 is good and productive for you so you can stop wasting time watching films that don't interest you.
I just watched Butterflies YouTube Documentary here and am glad that I did. I have had this YouTube Channel since the creation of YouTube and have experienced having a Viral Video myself. It is on my channel if you care to watch and comment. I am now a YouTube Partner and am producing a few other channels of my own as well as a few for others. I still feel as if I have yet to be truely serious with this my "JamesWorley" channel. Please check out my videos and suggestions are appreciated!
@ButterfliesTheMovie I am in the process of putting together a group of Florida YouTubers who WANT the same success that many of the YouTubers in your movie have. This would be an excellent sequel to your movie. Showing the struggles of a group of YouTubers who join forces together to attempt to become famous on YouTube! I have 20 members in the month old group and hopefully we will have our first meeting this month!
The video posts keeps you hooked up to the end. The colors of the site do not stress the eyes thanks for such calming colors. The photos are related and help understand the ideas effortlessly.
I still say the best way to become a partner is to get an underbite, a sissy lisp, and a swoop haircut like Dawson, Fred, and all the rest who are trying to practice for when they are Donald Trump combing over his bald spot like Shane Nay Nay Dorkson.
Honestly, even though I watch Youtube videos daily, less than 5% of the videos I watch in a month on YT are from any of the so-called "youtube celebs" in this documentary.
Mr. Safety sure is full of himself, huh? "I see that some people are ahead of me on Youtube because they have more subscribers. But, I have more views so it doesn't matter."
1:37 - The guy on the far right is Youtube user Philos71. He's not one of the featured users because unlike the "famous" Youtubers, he doesn't use his channel for personal gain.
This basically establishes what everyone already knows, in that there are WAY more attention-whoring douchebags out there than anyone originally guessed, and who also think they are much more relevant than they actually are by seeking personal validation through a stupid-assed Youtube video.
no offence ment, youtube is full of interesting topics and is the best place to spend some time, not everyone is interested in daft nonsense though as it does "throw up" quite a bit of that from time to time if were honest, so its not aimed at you guys, just my own interest is more along the lines of educating myself in different areas (mostly) as i have found a few documentaries to suit my tastes, just this aint one. keep enjoying your work, as its people like yourself that make youtube great
i watched that in 2 minutes, fast forward helped alot. just checking out youtube documentaries recently and i have found some that are interesting and very enjoyable to watch, this aint for me, ill keep searching though, peace.
@Ngun200 in 2 mins you couldnt get past the opening credits so it must be difficult to judge the whole film. Our feedback has been wonderful from all kinds of people
You definately learn something from this video, but I dont think YOUTUBE should make people pay to watch it in the future after it gets many views because this video dosnt show or teach how to be a youtuber and make money!
Wikileaks allowed the world to realized what is going on, youtube allowed people to upload the video to back up those claims. Youtbe has change the game for long, do not let congress to damage youtube, google, facebook contact your congress and express your concern against SOPA!
the sad thing is, is youtube is getting more like "the industry" now with all the professional content on youtube.. and i understand that people want to see better quality stuff... but on the other hand.. their is a reason that people came to youtube in the first placeand i think youtubers are forgetting that :(
Are there any popular YouTubers outside of the US? The popular YouTubers I've seen (including the ones shown in this film) always seem to be American/living in America eg haven't seen any successful British ones. Seems to me that your geographical location (as much as your talent) determines how successful you can be on YouTube. I'm a British artist using YouTube for my artwork and am interested to know!
@finbart1 their is famous youtubers from other countries their is just way more in u.s.a but u.s.a is big so that is why their seems to be more.. and i'm not sure about when this was made.. but alot of youtubers have only recently moved to l.a before then they lived everywhere... oh and examples of famous youtuber from other countries is.. charlieissocoollike from england and communitychannel from australia..
Its so odd seeing how Cory (Mr. Safety) has changed. At 37.33 when it got to him proposing to Steph, all I could think was "I remember seeing that video when it first came out.". And now they are divorced. Its crazy how quickly things can change.
Dave has grown up, Olga isnt dating that D-bag anymore, and Lisa only puts out videos every few months now. All of them have changed so much.
Also, I did enjoying picking out CharlesTrippy in the first few seconds.
What an awesome movie, I'm glad I got to see it. You DO get the feeling of, "wow, I'm not alone, I'm not the only person who enjoys spending lots of time planning and making videos for my channel!"
So cool, and now I've got a couple new channels to look up.
@tatertots00 because there is no other story than the one told it this film. The people change the story doesn't why would I make the same movie again?
@filmester I disagree that its the same movie. Different youtubers have different stories and youtube has grown so much since the "rise to the top" is much different than it was back then.
But even if you're right and the movie comes out similar with different people, it will still have a much greater audience and that makes it worth doing In my opinion
I did not know Olga, but I think he and the BF make a very funny couple and I would what a reality show about them, I use to really like boh3m3 and very sad about him, the others i only marginally had an interest in.
I did not like this movie at all. Except for Dave they all seemed like egoistic douchebags only looking for money and promotion, especially Olga and her boyfriend and Mr. Safety. It kind of sounded like they were not trying to do good stuff for their subscribers but rather only looking for ways to fool more people into clicking the subscribe-button so they can become more famous and earn more money.
I love Youtube but I think you really made it look like a horrible place.
I am so proud to watch this movie. I am so glad and proud of my present and future subscribers for believing in me. I love you Youtube. Awesome movie!
THANK YOU AGAIN ESTER for having me in your AMAZING MOVIE!!!! I Love You for this! It's so Awesome can watch this for free now :) I've promoted this a bunch before but I will always promote this amazing film and your amazing work! I'm the one you interviewed about LisaNova at 50:20 I'm honored to be in a film with people I admire! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

I respect how people hard people work to get their career started. But, I think this vlogging youtube....thing really shows a lost generation. It is a bit narcissistic to film yourself all day, talk about only you, and want all of this attention just because you are being you. A generation of children rasied in a broken home are trying hard to get attention. Youtube gives this lost generation the attention they crave. Its sad in a way. The viewers become the parents the vloggers never had.
Oh hai, I can teach you how you could make some money uploading youtube videos. Search for royalty free music. Upload those to megaupload or something. Then sign up with bee4biz (Just Google it) and lock your download link. Start making videos showcasing your free downloads and post protected download links in video description. bee4biz pays you each time people complete a survey to unlock your download link. They pay via moneybookers or PayPal weekly.
@321Lola123321 if you couldnt see this was old just look at dave and yeah, shane wasnt really around back then or not as big i guess. like this is olgakay, dave, lisa,mr. safety there really old tubers
That was such a nice movie. So good that there are people who love the internet as much as I do! YAY i am not alone :D I wish a YouTube convention or so would be in Europe. I've been on youtube since 2007 but I simply have no cash for flying to USA for such a thing.
this is inspiring, at the same time as it puts me down...
I recently started making videos but I don't think that they'll ever get many views at all, since there are so many people out there, doing the same thing. But I'm just going to continue making them, because I like them =)
Youtube enables ever more average folk to become popular amongst people who are easily entertained. I think youtube contains members, popular members, that enjoy personality and ego fetish. They love filming themselves and reading their comments, it's self worship of importance. They need it as much as a cocaine addict needs their next fix, if they didn't have youtube, they'd be chained to mirrors or attention seeking with their banal behaviour.

@sportsportsport
And yet you're on it as well.
FrauofGermany 10 months ago
It's quite sour to notice how YouTube is losing it's authenticity and popular users actually selling out. It's becoming Hollywood.
