i needa buy this dvd just for her in it!!!! I wish they recorded it with her and Michael Ball as Giorgio though, but he played Giorgio in London not on broadway:( It would have been great if it was Donna and Michael though
First saw Donna Murphy in the title role of DROOD! This show does something a little amazing in making this beautiful woman plain, even ugly. Yet at the same time her character's beauty shines through. An amazing performance!
I wish Donna would make a solo album of her favorite songs. She can even sing the phonebook for all I care! I just want to listen to her beautiful voice!
No!! Just because the woman can sing, and is not attractive, does not mean that she can play Fosca! This is a role that calls for a profoundly talented actor. Susan could not pull it off.
@AtLastOnTheGround Although I agree that Susan shouldn't be Fosca, to be fair, we don't know if she can act or not. She might be an even better actress than she is a singer...who knows....just sayin'.
I have mixed feelings about this musical... I once felt a passion like that, but the result... It gave me a purpose in life, yes, but such obsession is not healthy, in the end, it is destructive. Now I very much prefer a relationship that is less obsessive and more constructive, and not consumed in a few months :-)
I do, that is precisely why I disagree :-) If the play was called "Obsession" it would be more honest. Sondheim's musicals usually are wise and witty, with a strong ironic touch. Seen like this, I tend to believe that "Passion" is not romantic at all, on the contrary, it's awfully sarcastic.
it is a stunning musical...i am so glad i have the dvd. donna murphy is extrodinary in her role of fosca..all acting students should watch this performance. i sure wish ms. murphy would record an album....patti lupone didnt even come close to donna murphy...
Still the most astonishing, and perhaps the most adult role I've ever seen on B'way. I saw it twice in previews, and it's hard to believe, Donna Murphy was actually booed during one show!
I juat had the great honor of meeting Donna Murphy in a master class in NYC! She is a brilliant actress and told us that this was her favorite and most challenging role to date! She is a true inspiration!
Donny Murphy's performance is so special, it goes beyond words or acting. Passion is one of Sondheim's best and most underrated scores. But after you see it several times(now available on DVD) you can never escape its mood or its magical appeal.
You can see the humility and passion for Giorgio in her eyes. That's not even Donna, that IS Fosca. She completely disappeared into that role. Fantastic performance.
Yes, and this is what Patti was not able to achieve and why Donna's performance was so special. I saw this 8 months after the opening... probably the only performance I've seen almost the entire OBC of, the show overall was not that great, but Donna was touching.
You hate and pity Fosca at the same time. You hate her because she's creepy, obsessive, and never knows when to lay off. But you can't help but pity her for her terrible condition and selfless love. Donna Murphy in this role is perfection.
Favorite musical of all time. :)

These are the most profound yet simple words I've ever heard ' loving you is not a choice it's who I am'
For me it's not about obsession but about acknowledgement of love without settling for anything less in return.

You really can't just listen to this song on the soundtrack. You have to watch it. It's so much more powerful that way.

Susan Boyle would make a perfect Fosca in a revival.

You do understand that one of PASSION's primary themes is obsession, right?

Sheer brilliance. End of story.
Donna's Fosca will go down in history. It's completely untouchable, not unlike Joanna Gleason in Into the Woods.
Brava!

I think this is the most beautiful and most meaningful love song ever written. How beautifully she expresses it. Viva Sondheim!

I've only heard one other version of this song. It was sung by Sean McDermott and it was equally as beautiful. But, still, Donna is the best.

I remember reading somewhere that Donna Murphy's performance was "emotionally naked" and I didn't understand what it meant until I saw this clip.
She puts herself out there, her soul and her emotions for all the world to see. In my opinion, that is what an actor should go for everytime.

This never gets old and the acting is what every actor aspires to be able to possess! The phrasing alone is incredible.
