you called it a baboon (hee hee) and I was trying to figure out where the baboon was - then I realized you meant balloon! I love the little snarl on Toby's face! cute!
My Sheltie puppy I just adopted was double merle breeding :( she has Wobblers Syndrome and can barely walk, I wish people would read and lean everything the can before breeding their dogs, or just not breed at all and leave it to breeders who care and work hard to produce healthy dogs. :(
this is what we call in the netherlands animal cruelty. just like in germany it's forbidden to breed double merle dogs.. what's more important? a nice looking dog or it's health? only combine a blue merle sheltie with a tricolor or bicolor sheltie!! breeders of double merle shelties all have the same excuses: ' the dog is used to being blind/deaf so it's not a problem for the dog'. Yes it is!! why breeding a double merle sheltie if you KNOW it's going to be sick? ANIMAL CRUELTY !!!
Poor Sheltie. I wonder who bred a blue merle and a blue merle, because that will result in a Double Merle Sheltie, who are usually deaf, mute and blind. I feel so sorry for them.
our last sheltie was blind in one eye and deaf too but if you clapped in her line of sight in her good eye she would com unlike the one i have now where he runs away from anything
She might be beautiful, but it's not allowed to breed completly white shelties! They're handicaped, like this poor dog, some of them are born without eyes. I live in Germany, and here it's forbidden.
This is what's called a "Double Merle" sheltie. People who are thinking about breeding their shelties should be aware of this sad fact. The Blue Merles have a weak gene. If you want to breed a blue merle you should do it with a tricolor or sable sheltie. NEVER breed breed a blue merle with another blue merle sheltie. The puppies that result from this are usually deaf and/or blind along with other health problems like this poor puppy.
You really shouldn't combine merle and sable either. It won't give sick progeny, but you do risk phantom merles who might later be bred to BM by someone who doesn't doesn't realise that their sable is merle.
Heterozygot (one copy) merles do not have a "weak" gene - they haveone copy of the merle gene, and two copies (homozygot or double merle) = sick dogs. It's that simple.
@Icarus1967 i wouldn't say poor puppy at all, yes it has problems but its obvious she is in a very loving home, even healthy dogs don't always get homes like this so i think this dog is very fortunate.
Yes, it is cruel, but this person got it from a rescue, it's not their fault!! They gave it a better life! Goodness me...

why do some breeders combine merle to merle ? its so easy to avoid health problems when you breed merle to tricolor !!!!!
