I'm a huge baseball fan and I remember this moment being live on TV. It's one of the greatest achievements in baseball in my lifetime. The only other one that comes to mind is Ripken passing Lou Gehrig. It must have been a thrill to see it live at the stadium.

"A little gambling" on your own team and sport brings into question the credibility of the game, no matter what his intentions were and he know that. Pete is responsible for his own actions both prior and post suspension. He was an all time great. Rose gets more attention by NOT being in the Hall of Fame than if he had been put in years ago..303 lifetime hitter(Cobb`s was .367),160 homers,.409 lifetime slugging average(Ruth`s was .690)!Trust me, if Rose had been elected to the Hall of Fame 15 years or so ago,we wouldn`t even be talking about him.He should be happy!

Except his BA/OBP/SLG isn't the reasoning for why he deserves to be in the Hall. It probably has more to do with the 4256 hits. That's kind of a feat, considering no one else except him and Cobb have 4000+ hits.
Oh, and to anyone who thinks that Ty Cobb didn't cheat -- bullshit. He fudged his batting average (counting one game twice since he went 2-3) during the 1910 season batting average competition with Nap Lajoie. So, yeah, shut the fuck up. Thanks.

Oh, and there's also even some minor controversy surrounding DiMaggio's hit streak in 1941. This isn't to say that it isn't an untouchable accomplishment (nor to suggest that he or Cobb are cheaters/bad players), but to think that players didn't use their proverbial muscle to get scorekeepers to work in their favor or found ways to effectively cheat the system as it existed is just straight-up ignorant.

I was about 10 when i first saw pete rose in 74, i am a mets fan and you know what happened with rose and harrelson in 73 playoffs so i hated pete but i never saw anyone play the game harder than pete rose. he attacked the game when he played, although i am a new york fan i respect the way rose played and baseball should be ashamed of themselves for not allowing this great ball player in the hof.

The fact that this man is NOT in the hall of fame is, to me, the biggest travesty in sports history. We have Ty Cobb, an ignorant racist, in the hall. Numerous players who took steroids will probably make the hall. Yet a man who had a clean slate as a player, sits without a bust in Cooperstown. My dream from a young boy has been and always will be to attend the MLB hall of fame. However, I remain waiting to fulfill that dream until the ban on Rose is lifted. Greatest player in baseball.

Gambling on baseball games by players etc has been forbidden for over a century. The consequences were well stated and known to all. If Pete Rose had a gambling problem, I can understand that, but he could have gambled other ways. I respect the man, but he should stay out.

@TeganX7 I suppose we will have to agree to disagree. In the past, other baseball players were caught gambling and were not treated as harshly as Rose. In my personal opinion, causing scores of dogs to suffer and then killing them brutally is worse than gambling. And if Vick were white he would be hounded by animal activists, but since he is from a "diverse background" he is left unmolested.
