I like how he just shows an interesting lick instead of showing off like most others do (and he would be totally capable of showing off). Great guitar player
Years ago I took lessons from Skolnick in NYC for several months. He was a very brilliant and positive teacher that got me to understand concepts that I NEVER would have understood on my own. And he did it in such a short time that I felt I had taken a huge leap in my playing and understanding of the guitar. Money got tight and I had to stop going,But I will always be grateful for my time learning from a true master.
Skolnick sees different modes.. parents... milf modes arpeggio, he starts on 7th base, where it's really sharp! It leads to a lot of interesting lines! He don't think of!!! He got that shape and can go all those places and chromatic notes gets interesting.
So he went up.. up chromatically a-and back down.. that note there is a target at the moment.. he is DOING a scale tone on a string. It is really perfect for that. chromatisysm triad augmented triad.. up and down the scale SHE'S COMING!!!
Believe it or not, I think nearly all top guitarists know this much of the theory behind what they're playing, despite how effortless it seems. Cos otherwise it's just not possible to become great. I've even seen Dizzee Rascal talking very musically, when he's in a studio or something, which shows that understanding the music u perform, like in this video, is really important, no matter how 'cool' u want to seem - u can play by copying up to a point but it's understanding the music which will h
@amazingaustin13 hey, you know just cause some guitarists cant play as fast or whatever doesnt mean they are shitty guitarists. but if u wanna play that game, check out total guitars best metal guitarists ever nominees. you will find that Mick Thompson is on there, and ur Alex Skolnick isn't. Don't get me wrong though, alex is still good.
@yungnatie Mick is a Joke. And so is Slipknot. Alex is a better player always has been always will be. Total Guitars plays to trends and always has. They have never truly been about talent or ability. You might as well get your info from Rolling Stone or spin. Grow up kid and learn your shit before posting.
@Theenragedone woa there , alex is much greater than mick. but slipknot has great catchy tunes. if they were a joke millions and millions of people wouldnt head bang to that.
@MrCarnage7 Millions and millions of people liking them means nothing. Millions listen to Brittney Spears and her ilk. Does that mean her music is good? No it doesnt. Slipknot music has never impressed me. Nor are either of the guitar players all that good. They are overrated and easily accessible. Millions headbanged to bands like Warrant and Poison. Does that make them good too? Slioknot are a joke of a band with a gimmick. I cant say my opinion will change.
@Theenragedone you obviously have no idea what your talking about, i dont care if you dont like the music, ur not a fucking prodigy and "All knowing" and watch were you throw that kid word around cause you sound like your 14 when you use it. so dont go acting like a cunt.
@yungnatie Im sorry what exactly do I not know about? Alex is a prodigy. Mick isnt. Alex is still a much better guitar player. You are the one cursing me out so who is acting like a child here?
@Theenragedone I know Mick and have played with him, while I'd never compare him to Alex Skolnick (may as well compare Paco De Lucia to Michael Romeo) he is a downright filthy player. Amazing skill, sickeningly tight rhythm chops, tremendous lead skill, and a surprising amount of theory knowledge. Different style than Alex, is a jazzy guitarist whereas Mick is full out metal. A lil classical in his playing, but he's a straight up metal guitarist. Why would you ever compare him to a jazz guy?
@HurricaneTBag Alex is far more than a jazz player. Alex has been essential in Testament's sound and is just a much a metal player as he is a jazz player. Ive never heard a Mick solo I have been impressed with. Unless Mick doesnt play to his potential in Slipknot, I cant say he has amazing leads. Alex is still a better metal player on top of his jazz and classical chops.
@panteraR21 im not mainsteam media, i think hes a good guitarist, teen was saying speed=skill (which is the wrong way to judge) so i said, and i quote "if u wanna play that game, check out total guitars best metal guitarists ever nominees... you will find that Mick Thompson is on there, and ur Alex Skolnick isn't" as in if you wanna factor in stupid shit to skill... look at total guitars ratings. btw, "mainstream" is not always bad. acting like a hardened outcast doesnt make you cool.
So much more thoughtful musically than the other betcha can't play this series...melodic minor and ultra dominant scales...augmented triad...that is music. Not just tremolo picking with metal zone distortion covering up mistakes.
Personally, I find the deepness to which he analyzes and explains the lick quite impressive. The average guitar rock star can hardly even pronounce "chromaticism".
@MrBRL Well I hate slash... but Zakk Wylde and Slash aren't metal. And who cares what scales you use? Its about what you like to play and how you put your soul into it.
Melodic Minor is such a beautiful scale , i was totally into pentatonic, Major and Minor Melodic, now i just learned this scale that´s just a masterpiece.
I´m glad i found a decent teacher to show me how to create melody with it!!
It is very easy and it is not a scale thinking, but a hybrid scale-chord. It is more jazz than rock. You can easily heard it because Alex swings and adds "blue notes".
The 17 dislikes are angry shredders who wished their favorite death/black metal guitarist came on here and sweeped sloppily for two minutes with terrible tone.
@vicgarcia30 hey i wasnt saying ALL death metal guitarists are bad, you are right theres a lot of good ones but theres a few sucky betcha cant play this vids with sub par death metal guitarists.
@PGROSYE02 Excuse me? Chuck Schuldiner, a death metal guitarist, can play better than any thrash metal guitarist i've ever heard. So you can shut your god damn mouth.
@UmadLoL Well I agree he is EXTREMELY talented... It would be fun to see him in a guitar duel with Marty Freidman, or Chris Boderick. I dont think anyone is "better" its all opinion everyone has their own style.
I like how alex chose not to shred the fuck out of the guitar and chose to do one of the most complicated theory licks. I still don't understand this theory lmao......
@supremetit Its not all that complicated. He's talking about how he views the harmonized chords from the melodic minor. How he views those chords instead of the scale and how he makes licks through those chords and chromatism. Its kinda like the chords in a Major scale cept its different cause your harmonzing different chords in a Melodic Minor Scale.
"Bbb melodic minor arpeggio w/ chromatics thrown in & a b9, #4, string skipping to the triple-flat 7, then a #2, aug5, plus a diminshed arpeggio in reverse w/ my pinky playing all the notes in a reverse swell, but all the last four notes are b3's of all the relative minors based on the 7th chords found in the Hindu scale, but of course that scale is also altered with non-diatonic 6ths inverted into 3rds. No... wait really its all just pentatonic w/ b9's that are from a non-tempered tuning." WTF?
"Bbb melodic minor arpeggio w/ chromatics thrown in & a b9, #4, string skipping to the triple-flat 7, then a #2, aug5, plus a diminshed arpeggio in reverse w/ my pinky playing all the notes in a reverse swell, but all the last four notes are b3's of all the relative minors based on the 7th chords found in the Hindu scale, but of course that scale is also altered with non-diatonic 6ths inverted into 3rds. @pickmylocks its actually not too hard, if u can learn all the scales and their modes it becomes very simple and u can picture it in ur head...hes playing the g minor scale except instead of the flat seven hes using the major seven, u can look at it another way. Its the g major scales with a minor third.
@bigmonkeyman44 Oh look... another retarded statement from a self professed monkey. Don't hijack a post about Skolnick to utter your foolishness because you will never be in the same league as he is. You have neither the talent, nor the mind to even contemplate the knowledge Alex pours into his playing and you sure as hell don't have any place rattling your stupid head about something you are so absolutely ignorant of.
@bigmonkeyman44 FYI... Skolnicks style is completely different from Hammet"s and he is ten times the player that Kirk is. Take it from a guitar player that has been playing for over 20 years. If you don't know that you aren't a guitar player or, at least, not a good one.
@bigmonkeyman44 Your statement is comparable to saying "Because Jimi Hendrix created the sound of modern rock guitar, nobody else should play rock because they are all just copying from him." Thrash was pioneered by Metallica but there were several hundreds of groups that were influenced by a lot of the same influences that Metallica had that became thrash legends as well. All of that aside, Alex Skolnick owns Hammett's ass on the guitar and he is one scary guitarist to compete with.
@bigmonkeyman44 You haven't made shit either troll. I can't believe that there are people like you out there that just want to argue. You don't care about the facts... you just like stirring up shit. I'll tell you this; I own you on the guitar and I know from your childish statements that you can't play at all.
@bigmonkeyman44 no, their first album came out in 1987, that doesnt mean they formed in 1987, and instantly got recognized and signed within a few months of forming
Guys... it's just the name of this series... it's absolutely not about posing, it's about teaching complex and difficult riffs. If you look at Skolnicks other stuff, this is one of the easiest licks he plays. But it's theoretically interesting, so he explains it in detail.
It's cool that this vid ( which is probably not that technical ) has one of the best ratings, besides to chris brodericks in the 'betcha can't play this' series! Skolnick is one of the most original and awesomest(?) metalguitarists.
you're in a big mistake,Steve Vai and joe said that they learned from each other in an interview for Guitar World when they were on their G3 tour with Yngwie Malmsteen
yep Joe teached Vai,but what I think is that Joe learned a lot of things from Vai too, cause they were having like 8 hours of jam sessions, you know this is a lot of time, and when Vai went to take a guitar lesson from Vai,he could already play fuckin great,so my opinion is that they both learned from each other ;)
well yeah we all learn from each other, Vai played with Zappa, didnt think he was that old, lol I learned a lot from the people on here too, it just unreal how many people play guitar and play with = skill to the pro's on here,
yep I agree with you man,and that's the best thing you cause, you had people thinking on what they are playing, and how is the easiest way to play it and to sound cool :) wish you all the best
Theory only improves playing, and his playing is a million times better now.

U can play this lick arpegio over F#7#9 or F#7b9. Most common chord used as a dominant chord.

0:32 listen carefully to the natural harmonic coming from his D string
That's the benefit of 0.13 gauge strings lol

@bigmonkeyman44 Oh look... another retarded statement from a self professed monkey. Don't hijack a post about Skolnick to utter your foolishness because you will never be in the same league as he is. You have neither the talent, nor the mind to even contemplate the knowledge Alex pours into his playing and you sure as hell don't have any place rattling your stupid head about something you are so absolutely ignorant of.
fishguru73 1 year ago
@fishguru73 why would i want to be a wannabe metallica guitarist like this dude? lolol
bigmonkeyman44 1 year ago
@bigmonkeyman44 FYI... Skolnicks style is completely different from Hammet"s and he is ten times the player that Kirk is. Take it from a guitar player that has been playing for over 20 years. If you don't know that you aren't a guitar player or, at least, not a good one.
fishguru73 1 year ago
@fishguru73 he copied james hetfield's thrash riffs.
bigmonkeyman44 1 year ago
@bigmonkeyman44 Name one Metallica song and one Testament song that you think are the same thing musically.
fishguru73 1 year ago
@fishguru73 every song....metallica were playing thrash metal before testament even formed...testament makes thrash metal lol.
bigmonkeyman44 1 year ago
@bigmonkeyman44 Your statement is comparable to saying "Because Jimi Hendrix created the sound of modern rock guitar, nobody else should play rock because they are all just copying from him." Thrash was pioneered by Metallica but there were several hundreds of groups that were influenced by a lot of the same influences that Metallica had that became thrash legends as well. All of that aside, Alex Skolnick owns Hammett's ass on the guitar and he is one scary guitarist to compete with.

@fishguru73 lolol jimi hendrix didnt make shit.
bigmonkeyman44 1 year ago
@bigmonkeyman44 You haven't made shit either troll. I can't believe that there are people like you out there that just want to argue. You don't care about the facts... you just like stirring up shit. I'll tell you this; I own you on the guitar and I know from your childish statements that you can't play at all.

@bigmonkeyman44 testament formed in 1982, research before you blabber.

Emulgator01 2 years ago 13
It's a pretty cool lick, who cares if he's just not laying it down. Skolnick rules.

It's cool that this vid ( which is probably not that technical ) has one of the best ratings, besides to chris brodericks in the 'betcha can't play this' series! Skolnick is one of the most original and awesomest(?) metalguitarists.
FreakKitchen94 2 years ago
You see those Jazz scales? Super complex and hardcore.
Its no wonder that many of the really great hardcore metal shredders have found a common bond with the Jazz legends.
Jazz and the Blues WAS the "thrash" scene back in the day.
Those scales are totally amazing.
moshin68 2 years ago 30
dude not blues, jazz to a certain extent, but blues was never known to be a very technical musical genre
blommen 2 years ago 5
@moshin68 on top of that he's using 13 gauge strings

Such a versatile player! And he plays everything perfectly, whether it's Testament, his solo jazz work, or Trans - Siberia Orchestra.

Yeah, Joe taught Alex and Rudy Escobar too.

you're in a big mistake,Steve Vai and joe said that they learned from each other in an interview for Guitar World when they were on their G3 tour with Yngwie Malmsteen
Headbanger0624 2 years ago
actually joe satriani taught alex...
joshotravez 2 years ago 7
I think Joe teached everybody lol
Joe even taught Vai
furlong08857 2 years ago 2
yep Joe teached Vai,but what I think is that Joe learned a lot of things from Vai too, cause they were having like 8 hours of jam sessions, you know this is a lot of time, and when Vai went to take a guitar lesson from Vai,he could already play fuckin great,so my opinion is that they both learned from each other ;)
Headbanger0624 2 years ago
well yeah we all learn from each other, Vai played with Zappa, didnt think he was that old, lol I learned a lot from the people on here too, it just unreal how many people play guitar and play with = skill to the pro's on here,
furlong08857 2 years ago
yep I agree with you man,and that's the best thing you cause, you had people thinking on what they are playing, and how is the easiest way to play it and to sound cool :) wish you all the best
