  • Fantastica!!!!

  • Lol Art Farmer playing in the section while Watkins solos ... that's where high notes get you - out the front of the band - showcased. Remember 'the' Cat ? And countless others including the man himself Maynard.

  • Unique big band. Boland truly was a master arranger.

  • Wait, there were 2 drummers playing at the same time? I'm confused.

  • Free jazz, folks, and I mean FREE. Scoredaddy, myself, and a few other bloggers go to a lot of effort to buy, rip - from LP and CD - scan at the highest quality we can. We do not make available some half-assed crap. You get from us the best available.

  • Why do the germans have all that exclusive stuff. Incredible how rich they were in art production.

  • Faces was released as an LP , who knows if its on CD. Sure Google would turn it up if it exists.

  • Fantastic, does someone know if "faces" was published as LP or CD and where to get it?

  • meine Lieblings BigBand

    VIELEN DANK für das posten.

  • Parts of this film were shown in a memorial to Francy Boland on Sat3 in the summer of 2005. Many thanks to Tobiwan for posting this!! I believe there might be another TV show with this band, part of a series of live tapings from Ronnie Scott's club in the summer of 1969. If you have it please post. Does anyone know when this here was taped? I tend to believe it was early 1970. Can anyone confirm this? Does anyone out there know what exactly happened to Derek Humble? His death was so sudden.

  • What i heard was that Derek got severely injured in a street fight in cologne in 1968, he never fully recovered and died from a stroke 1971.

And sorry i got no exact recording date of this.

  • I heard that too, but there are contradictory stories here. In a death notice, in Coda June 1971, it says he died in a bar fight in London. Elsewhere, it is stated he died at his mother's place in Easington, England, near Durham. By looking at film clips, including one with Gillespie (viz. Jazz Icons series), he certainly doesn't look like someone on his last legs, but then again live is fickle, as we all know. Anyway, thanks for your follow up and, especially, making film available.

  • @tobiwan1977 That's right, he was injured in a mugging i Cologne 1968, and Phil Woods temporarely took over the lead-alto. Humble went back to London, playd a little with amongst others Phil Seaman before he passed 22 February 1971

  • Wow, this is cool (and seemingly rare).

  • I have this album(MPS a great lable). This band was very underated. The idea of two drummers seems crazy but in fact they complamented each others playing, one playing brushes while the other played stix, and the compositions were perfect for the style of each musican.I love this Big Band.TFP

  • absolut ein zeitexemplarisches Zuckerstückchen ! Danek dafür, ein Kenner. Mfg Chris Marmann
