@mrguy561 Depends on where you draw the line - all known versions of "Vega-Tables" besides the very early "cornucopia" demo were recorded long after a proper SMiLE album was on the books (April '67). Bits and pieces from the April sessions are in this song (the first version of the "I know that you'll feel better..." tag). Aside from that, it was all recorded intentionally for Smiley Smile.

I think this song is one of brian's songs w/ a secrect motive. On SMiLE The other members didn't likeh is druggyness and adding drug lyrics, so Brian wrote a song innocently about vegetables still incorporating drugs to it.

The reworked Smile songs on this album are utter garbage, imo. For me, the true and only versions are on Brian's 2004 'SMiLE', the ultimate pop masterpiece. However, I love the rest of the songs on this album, like 'With Me Tonight' and 'Whistle In'.

I'm going to be trading in my CD copy of "Smiley Smile"/"Wild Honey" tomorrow as a matter of fact (I've been kicking around the idea of letting it go for awhile and then I just realized I can buy the anniversary E.P. of "Good Vibrations" to get THAT masterpiece back in my collection). This album just SUCKS! "Wild Honey" is an O.K. album but nothing I go back and play much. I wish Brian would release a "Smile In Progress" album with as many demos as could be found.

Even looking at the Beach Boy's work you can see him all over their later stuff. Forever, Slip on Through, Cuddle Up, Little Bird, Only With You - they all rank as some of my favourite BB songs... and they're all Dennis! Carl wasn't in the same league writing wise (although Trader and Feel Flows are both incredible).

If you want to interpret it in relation to weed you may of course. I think Brian Wilson was just fucked up on Acid and was literally just making a random song about vegetables. To me it just seems a little far fetched to read weedsmoking into the lyrics. I mean, from having done acid myself, I think its far more plausible that he was simply just tripping good. Although I would assume that he probably did a little too much acid during this period but hey, it is vegetarian after all...
