I Think the end part sang by Brian Wilson not carl ~and the celery part is not paul mccartney(smiley smile version),al jardine did the celery part i guess
@mrguy561 Depends on where you draw the line - all known versions of "Vega-Tables" besides the very early "cornucopia" demo were recorded long after a proper SMiLE album was on the books (April '67). Bits and pieces from the April sessions are in this song (the first version of the "I know that you'll feel better..." tag). Aside from that, it was all recorded intentionally for Smiley Smile.
You all have to hear the NEW mix of "Vega-tables" from "The Smile Sessions" box set!!!! Blows this version out of the water and across the freakin' landscape!!!! This version is so half-assed in comparison. The whole new mix has the creativity you hear from 1:48 onward in this one!
@MattHatter Agreed the original (SMiLE) version is better by far. Much more fleshed out. This whole album (Smile Smiley) sounds like a stripped down version of SMiLE IMO.
I really miss the "eat a lot, sleep a lot[...]" part which is present on the SMiLE version, but I really like the simplistic instrumentation of this one.
@dirkbrad and then again,,,,,,just dipped into a couple of books which put Paul at the sessions.....but on conflicting dates....the truth is out there!
@dirkbrad There is evidence, actually...One morning in Los Angeles, “Beatles Breakfast Show” DJ Chris Carter asked listeners the following question: “What Beach Boys’ song does Paul McCartney appear on, eating a stick of cellery?” Dozens of callers phoned in with wrong answers before someone finally called in and correctly replied, “Vegetables!” The caller? Sir Paul McCartney, of course. His prize? A radio phone and a bag of goodies, all signed by… Sir Paul. :)
I think this song is one of brian's songs w/ a secrect motive. On SMiLE The other members didn't likeh is druggyness and adding drug lyrics, so Brian wrote a song innocently about vegetables still incorporating drugs to it.
@ryandfaris Oh shit, a 21 year old music major who uses the word "dickpoo" and curses at people with different opinions. I withdraw all statements, god bless Paul McCartney.
@ABurningCanoe I was kidding man... Like you said...I said "dick poo". But in all seriousness, I really like that guy a lot, he really made me the musician I am today and I don't think his best work was done chomping on celery.
p.s. I didn't curse as you I used "fucking" more like an adjective.
Wilson wrote this when he was struggling with the hallucinogenic drug LSD, which can cause a childlike regression over time. (thanks, Andrew - Covington, OH)-Songfacts. com
WELL WHATDAYA KNOW?! I SPOKE AND BRIAN HEARD! THIS SUMMER, "THE SMILE SESSIONS" IS GOING TO BE RELEASED! @Backlap Well, the reworked SMiLE songs definitely aren't the best, but I wouldn't call it utter garbage. Even 2004's SMiLE is a deeply flawed version of what Brian was trying to do in 67.
I don't think McCartney is chomping in this one. He did in the original, but this is the horrible remix and an overall embarrassment of an album. Brian was so damn close...I blame that douche Mike Love for ruining the whole thing.
@surfcollector I concur! I'm going to be trading in my CD copy of "Smiley Smile"/"Wild Honey" tomorrow as a matter of fact (I've been kicking around the idea of letting it go for awhile and then I just realized I can buy the anniversary E.P. of "Good Vibrations" to get THAT masterpiece back in my collection). This album just SUCKS! "Wild Honey" is an O.K. album but nothing I go back and play much. I wish Brian would release a "Smile In Progress" album with as many demos as could be found.
@wrecktem Actually, I think this song is about vegetables (if you can believe it). Brian worked in a health food store at the time. I'm sure they were all burnt while recording it though :)
Interesting how the last 15 seconds actually comes from the original SMiLE recordings. I'm so used to the final "I threw away the candy bar and I ate the wrapper" lyrics, even though the general public never heard the last verse for decades.
One morning in Los Angeles, “Beatles Breakfast Show” DJ Chris Carter asked listeners the following question: “What Beach Boys’ song does Paul McCartney appear on, eating a carrot?” Dozens of callers phoned in with wrong answers before someone finally called in and correctly replied, “Vegetables!” The caller? @halosANDsins As Paul's LA visit was april 67 It would have been The Smile version of vegetables that Macca is on which was unreleased untill the 90's Good vibes box set. This version was (mostly) recorded at Brian Wilsons home during june 67.

I don't want to bad mouth Dennis wilson , from anything I've read, he seemed like a good guy! and it was good to see him have success with an album and not that bum mike love, also it is hard to shine when you have a brother as brilliant as Brian!
Theres a very rare version of this by Jan and Dean. In all honesty, it puts this to shame. Does anyone have it to post? Its on their "Best of" double album.
@Karateworm poor old dennis was no incredible talent , nor was carl R.I.P. the incredible talent was their big brother ,that is the relative without whom ,we would not be discussing anything!
@jsilence418 Dennis wasn't a talent? Are you kidding me? Find a copy of Pacific Ocean Blue, and listen to it. Or alternatively, youtube his songs River Song and Thoughts of You. Even looking at the Beach Boy's work you can see him all over their later stuff. Forever, Slip on Through, Cuddle Up, Little Bird, Only With You - they all rank as some of my favourite BB songs... and they're all Dennis! Carl wasn't in the same league writing wise (although Trader and Feel Flows are both incredible).
@jsilence418 Kind of a silly comment since Mike's vocals have defined so many of the Beach Boys' sounds. A prick, I agree, and ego out of control, maybe, but hardly no talent and hardly a loser.
@chriskassel1 He wasn't talentless, but he wasn't anything special either. His voice is my least favourite of all the BBs, and his writing credits didn't really amount to much... as much as he tries to stitch his name onto Brian's songs.
@chriskassel1 love would not have a career without Brian no talent no career .if he is in the band Brian will use him just because he is there !as for his voice, it is just plain bad !my comment shows more reason than yours, are you a love by chance?
@jsilence418 No, I'm not a Love, but I am someone who knows that not only did Mike Love co-found the Beach Boys, he helped keep the band together when Brian was drooling into a box of sand and afraid to go on stage. The only thing your comment shows is that you have difficulty writing English and seem to have a crush on Brian. Are you gay by chance?
@chriskassel1 No not gay and if I were ,red necked gay bashing wouldn't surprise me coming from some one that is obviously not too bright . lol so stupid, let me educate you again. love was not a co founder he weezled his way in to his cousins band, and any music of consequence released by the band ,is usually Brian Wilsons, not that no talent bum mike love's, but you obviously can't tell the difference so....
@jsilence418 : Hey Einstein, how is asking you if you are gay considered bashing? Are you paranoid along with being an illiterate douche?
Here's a Wiki entry: Michael Edward "Mike" Love (born March 15, 1941) is an American singer/songwriter and musician with The Beach Boys. He formed the band along with his cousins Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson, and their friend Al Jardine.
@chriskassel1 Oh my you simpletons with no insight nor clues, always need to back themselves up usually it's the bible ( or rolling stone) but it doesn't make you any less wrong, or make you look any smarter. lol that would take weeding out the subnorms starting with your dad, you have no power of discrimination and even worse taste! wiki is notoriously wrong, as you are notoriously stupid!
@jsilence418 Hey Einstein, aka Douchbage: Here is a quote from Wiki. You can edit it if it's wrong, but I won't hold my breath.
Michael Edward "Mike" Love (born March 15, 1941) is an American singer/songwriter and musician with The Beach Boys. He formed the band along with his cousins Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson, and their friend Al Jardine.
@rwk1983 not a song i'm fussy about ,popularity is not always a sign of quality, . around Brian Wilson all the time yet can only write one song in what? 47 years??? pass!
When i heard this i had a Huge smile just grow on my face, and i cant stop smiling. Its brilliant 5/5 cant believe i havent heard it before and i wish it was longer.
If you want to interpret it in relation to weed you may of course. I think Brian Wilson was just fucked up on Acid and was literally just making a random song about vegetables. To me it just seems a little far fetched to read weedsmoking into the lyrics. I mean, from having done acid myself, I think its far more plausible that he was simply just tripping good. Although I would assume that he probably did a little too much acid during this period but hey, it is vegetarian after all...

@chriskassel1 He wasn't talentless, but he wasn't anything special either. His voice is my least favourite of all the BBs, and his writing credits didn't really amount to much... as much as he tries to stitch his name onto Brian's songs.

@chriskassel1 love would not have a career without Brian no talent no career .if he is in the band Brian will use him just because he is there !as for his voice, it is just plain bad !my comment shows more reason than yours, are you a love by chance?
jsilence418 1 year ago

You can edit this in Wiki if it is wrong.

I love Smiley Smile!
Had Brian not lost his marbles we would have only had SMiLE, and no Smiley Smile. Now we have both! (wish SMiLE was fully completed)
I know that you'll feel better when you send us in your letter and tell us the name of your favourite vega-table...

Brian in this era was bringing that childish whimsy into his work. Much like Syd Barrett was doing.

Jesus fucking Christ - again, I've seen you troll every Beach Boys video out there.
Like jwild said: "Brian in this era was bringing that childish whimsy into his work. Much like Syd Barrett was doing."
It fits into the child-like and health themes of the album. The Beatles wrote "pathetic" songs in this vein, too, you know.

vegetarians should go hug a tree, this song is about weed! and if you think an egg is an aborted chicken then you're silly.
neil182sr 2 years ago
If you want to interpret it in relation to weed you may of course. I think Brian Wilson was just fucked up on Acid and was literally just making a random song about vegetables. To me it just seems a little far fetched to read weedsmoking into the lyrics. I mean, from having done acid myself, I think its far more plausible that he was simply just tripping good. Although I would assume that he probably did a little too much acid during this period but hey, it is vegetarian after all...
oerich 2 years ago
@oerich most of the late 60's sound was inspired by acid

This song isn't about weed. Fuck off.
