The RCMP emergency response team is equipped with bean-bag guns, but the Calgary police (n the video) no longer use them because of accuracy issues. On the day of the shooting, Cheema stabbed Sandhu (his wife)32 times in the head and torso, slashed her mother and threatened to kill their 2-year old daughter. The officer, Constable Vernon, (Calgary PD) was cleared of the shooting.

I've posted lots of comments on here but what I am trying to convey to people, and what people do not understand is that a knife IS a deadly weapon! The only real way to defend against a knife attack is to put distance between you and the attacker. As a police officer, sometimes that is not an option. Especially if he believes that the person with the knife can and will hurt someone else if allowed to leave. If that happens the OFFICER is held liable for allowing that person to leave the area.
@SkylarkGSX What would advise in how to take him down? Use some slick martial arts move and knock the knife from his hand? Not that easy Sparky! Its obvious from your comments that you are not and have not been in a situation like the ones the police officers (and I) have been in. @GazijArmin I am always amazed at how people will always say, "Shoot them in the leg" or "shoot it out of their hand" Not that easy. The leg, as well as the head, is a smaller target and harder to hit thereby increasing the chance of a bullet missing the target and hitting and innocent person. By shooting center mass (torso) you decrease that chance AND stop the situation. Also someone shot in the leg can still inflict damage.

Watch the interview at the end. The criminal, covered in blood, turned and ran TOWARD two officers with the knife drawn and was shot five to six feet from them. This camera angle is unfortunate because the car blocks the view of the two officers, but you can see the man charging at them... He wasn't attacking nothing! Glad the witness cleared up that point.

Those facts AND the fact that he is threatening ARMED police officers is justification to stop him. If the officer believes he could or will harm others if he leaves the scene, and has the capability to do so (knife in hand) then he is justified in shooting him... even in the back if necessary if that is the only shot that presents itself.

I can tell you from experience that ANYTIME ANYONE has a deadly weapon in their hand, I am drawing my weapon. If the weapon is dropped or less lethal means can stop him, then I am all for it. What we are seeing is 2:52 seconds of video. Those means may have already been tried without success.

@GazijArmin I am always amazed at how people will always say, "Shoot them in the leg" or "shoot it out of their hand" Not that easy. The leg, as well as the head, is a smaller target and harder to hit thereby increasing the chance of a bullet missing the target and hitting and innocent person. By shooting center mass (torso) you decrease that chance AND stop the situation. Also someone shot in the leg can still inflict damage.
By the way, cops are never trained to "shoot to kill".

Court precedent and various state and federal laws have set down that if someone presents a knife in a threatening manner, both cops and private citizens are justified to shoot in defense. The cop held back for a LONG time, longer than he needed to, to try to talk him down.

This was certainly handled very professionaly. Personally, I would have shot him as soon as he put his knife up to that one officer. More than likely, he was on something and wanted to get away. The officer's were threatened for their life and took action. Bad guy incapacitated and the officer's go home again. GOOD JOB OFFICERS!

Watch the interview at the end. The criminal, covered in blood, turned and ran TOWARD two officers with the knife drawn and was shot five to six feet from them. This camera angle is unfortunate because the car blocks the view of the two officers, but you can see the man charging at them... He wasn't attacking nothing! Glad the witness cleared up that point.
