But still, in spite of the evidence, many people in Tuvalu don't believe they will be forced to leave, and point to their bibles for proof. What is going to happen to a nation without their home islands to anchor what is left of their culture? by Juriaan Booij
This is not a cuturally or spiritual dilemma. If the land you are on is sinking, please move. I am sure our ancestors had at least as much love for their homelands, even whilst seeking new ones, for whatever reason...but a sinking land has got to be one of the better reasons.
@schkin69 With what? Do you want to dredge the coral? Transfer gravel from Asia? Dubai used the local seabed to create the islands. They didnt use coral reefs, or ship in gravel from a far away continents. Sure its a beautiful place, but come on...
Where did these people ORIGINALLY come from? Perhaps it is almost time they return to their homeland?
e240 is correct. the history of earth shows that land masses come and go. people cannot change it if nature determines that something will change. its not like it is a mountain top made of granite or dolomite. it probably is a reef built on coral and bird shit, like nauru. pretty, but not anything more permanent than the petals on an almond tree.
anti gravity plasma jets under the island - that'll solve it..
Another global warming bullshit. The earth is always evolving - people will just have to move with the earth instead of trying, in futility, to change things that are part of the figment of their imagination.
yeah but people still live there others go elswhere and the world doesnt care nothing can be done sinking like a ........... er im actually of heritage its sad but before the claim im going to visit and all you non haterz stay out of this.
is there anything that can be done?! cause the island is small already as it is........not much engineering can go on there...especially if the water is coming up through the ground. its an atoll, not much stability anyway
@SteveWrathall I've been there and I've seen it with my own eyes. I don't care what Research paper you read claims, You can't argue that the island is not sinking if it clearly can be seen.
look at Holland, who reclaims land from the sea, but this is not usually a matter of possibilities but of financing such an ultraexpensive venture! In times of economic crisis....
crap it has nothing to do with anthropomorphic global warming, islands come and go for millions of years. people are so arrogant they think they can effect global warming... laughable
i come from tuvalu thats y my name tuvaluangirl and i went there this holidays and u r all right its beautiful but its not fludding anymore its not like that any more so theres no need to worry!! but if it does just disapear... :( :( :( :(
a lot of man-made islands in dubai were huge failures and are being washed away by the sea right now. don't know if i would go to those engineers for help...
"YES" global warming is here, islands are disappearing, "BUT THEY DO'NT HAVE TO". If people stopped felling "SORREY" and "GOVERNMENTS STOPPED TALKING" and "TAKE ACTION" we have and engineer solution for their plight. It's not rocket science, our company has been in Shore Line Protection for over 30 years and involved in creating man made islands, Dubai a classic example. Believe it or not "THEIR ARE COUNTRIES LOWER THAN SEA LEVEL ALREADY" and they survived. "PUT WORDS INTO ACTION" STOP TALKING.
In the Solomon Islands are the Carteret islands. There, Google Earth shows a Greenpeace marker saying: "the low-lying Carteret Islands are already feeling the effects of sea level rise". It is accompanied by a tear-jerker video about the plight of the population. Greenpeace does not mention that these islands are on the edge of the Ontong Java Plateau, an unstable area of volcanic origin. Why are no sea level rises in Tuvalu, while the Carterets are experiencing fast rises.
Geoscience Australia reports in their survey report for Tuvalu on the change in sea level between 2007 and 2009. Three stations report an increase, the largest 0.92mm. Twelve stations report a decrease, the largest 1.11mm. No sea level change over these years in Tuvalu! Compare this with comments from the assistant secretary for Tuvalu Foreign Affairs Paani Laupepa: "Our whole culture will have to be transplanted. because of sea level rises".
Hot debate over the global warming issue has ended already. It is a universally accepted "truth" by all scientists. Do not shy away from what ourselves' responsibilities. Politicians are among the most unreliable people. Don't count on them!!
Mankind is responsible for some of the global warming, not entirely but most of us, but we can do something to help, not only rely on the politicians. The earth is changing, we cannot deny that.
they need to elevate the Houses with a solid foundation. so the houses are up at least 10 ft or so. Looks like a nice place so it would be good to save.
and what about Antarctica?! If all of the ice melted, would this cause a worst massive storm just like from the opening credits from "The Rescuers" with the remians what's left of Antarctica?
Oh... I see you're sinking. I see it with both of my eyes. I have images, I know. I can't pretend I don't know. Look, I'm really sorry to live in the f' part of the world where reality doesn't seem essential, but... you know, there will always be "experts" telling you we can go on like that...
I'm really sorry.
The possessors of the keys of this mad world are not conscient because they are cold. So cold, how can they feel the heat ?
... The world is doing a brainstorming about it, you know, some investigations, they have to think about it, they must speak with experts, you know, maybe our way of life, you know, is no problem, you know, and well, you know, finding oil, to make cars go, THAT is a problem. And funding Banks, with money taken from taxes. You know, you should make twin sister with West Bank archipel ... It's a bit the same problem, they have. They are sinking in cold waters too.
But perhaps this time they will have an island with no natives and a problem that an exlevator can easily fix and have their board meetings there where no one can spy on there next moves.
Better still the Islanders can immigrate to a western country and start paying TAX bank FEEs ect. This is all being planned for the islanders and if you don't believe me do some research.
Climate change is inevitable, with or without man's help (though more than likely without, since our total carbon contribution to the atmosphere is 2% of all carbon released from the earth...maybe we should ban volcanoes and compost heaps on the floors of rainforests!!!)
I'd hate to see Tuvalu go, but there's still another life for them in The Shire - I mean, New Zealand. Sorry.
and no matter if this a small group of islands in the South Pacific, THEIR COUNTRY IS GOING TO DISSAPEAR, it will be the first dissapeared nation in the modern history and some governments still refuses to talk about global warming, if Tuvalu actually dissapears in the next 50 years I think that it would be one of the major failures of the humanity, we still could do something, but how many people do even know that there's a country named Tuvalu? The problem is much serious than it seems
I saw a documentary on National Geographic yesterday about this terrible issue, I had heard about this before but I had never seen the images; the faces. I think that we should do something, while there are countries like Australia or the US which doesn´t even admit that THERE IS SOMETHING CALLED GLOBAL WARMING, there are people who are suffering it NOW, in this moment, this is not a problem just for Tuvaluans, this is the first effect of a global disaster
australia is funding billions of dollars towards global warming
at the moment its not much of our concern anyways seeing as we only contribute to about 1% of the earths green house gases. but it is our concern that we may be hit the worst
