This is an absolute classic. Scared the crap out of my 72 year old dad when he was young (he would have been 13). This is a great example of a classic original that was done justice by it's sequel. Both should be on anyone's list of all time greatest horror/sci-fi movies.
One of the scariest movies ever, a real masterpiece, but James Arness said that he was ashamed he worked in it because the rubber alien mask was so phony. Might be, you never really get a good closeup of his head. Scary, scary, scary stuff!
you it hard to say verison of the Thing is best becouse both the 1982 John Carpenter verison & this verison from 1951 great like the idea of a shape shifting alien of The Thing 1982 how everyone the bace isnt sure who to trust as they might be the thing i do have the thing 1982 on dvd however it would be good to the thing 1951
I liked the Scientist in this movie. He reminded me of Joel Klein complaining about GW Bush picking on the poor terrorists. Or better yet Joe Biden complaining.
Everything from dialogue to pace to suspense-building puts this movie in a league of its own. Howard Hawks knew his stuff... James Cameron copied the geiger counter scenes for his 'Aliens' movie..to great effect.
The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Thing from Another World would be a great boxed set of good alien / bad alien movies from the early fifties. Which do you prefer?...Do you really have a choice?
@errolfan The Thing from Another World over The Day The Earth Stood Still. But only by a hair. Like everyone said, both are Masterpieces. I'd love to see both on a Double Bill at an old movie house. Like the old Lowes in Jersey City. Thanks for the upload gamera77.
A movie unequaled in the science fiction genre with both its soundtrack and presentation. This movie changed the history of filmmaking and its soundtrack is perhaps the most iconic and recognizable sound of any science fiction movie.
I bought the audio CD as "inspirational" music when I write. One of the great scifi films in the "classical" style. Tight direction, careful special effects for the period, showing the viewer just enough to let the imagination fill in the rest. Nightmare images, the flaming figure running off into the dark, the dead dogs, the hand. And then there's Tiomkin's score.
You're right, Petroni. One of the perfect movies. Let's not forget that precise, witty, intelligent dialogue that humanizes a large group of characters effortlessly. The world is a better place because of art like this.
Thank you 4 presenting this without the dialogue, truly this is a classic, mood setting piece. Tiomkin kicks it to the curb on this one, i also believe Bernard Herrmann could have done well on this one also. Could someone find the opening theme to the 50's t.v. series The D.A.?
still have never seen this in its entirety, though john carpenter's remake is one of the greatest horror movies ever made.

James Arness as the thing was scary right up there with Karloff's Frankenstein.

This movie used to scare the pants off me when it would come on the late show on t.v. in the 50's! Course i HAD to watch it every time.

Wonderfully bombastic score, an overlooked gem from the exception Dimitri Tiomkin! Great film too!

I love the Carpenter's version so I might give this one a try, altough I don't know if this isn't too "oldschool" for me.
Is it worth for a 17 year old to watch this?
sitofak 1 year ago
@sitofak I would think so yes. Its great to see where the original concepts came from and how different horror was back then.

At 2:20 I'm expecting them to dance the Hokey-Pokey.
'You put your right hand in...... HEY! You over there ! Yeah you, the green scaly guy! No cheating using tentacles!'

WHERE IS THE ACTUAL ACTUAL MOVIE
superfatttyfatboy 1 year ago
Well, I can't say this is too far from actual human behavior. If you can't figure how something works, either blow it up or shoot it. Problem solved.
