I missed something in my study of history. I never knew during WWII that 1000's were killed by 'the communists'. Why haven't I heard of this I wonder....
notwithstanding whatever God may allow I'm asking about any theological perspective Girard may have. He does claim to be a Christian. But how can he claim to be a Christian on what seems to be purely anthropological grounds? Most people who claim to be Christians do so in the name of the mystery the Christ figure represents, but Girard takes the mystery out of the figure, and indeed in Girard’s explanation, Christ is precisely a demystifying figure who exposes the rationality behind the myth.
@klauserino Pickup "Things Hidden Since the Foundation" from the library or store. However you should also know that he later wrote in Battling to the End that his reading of Hebrews was incorrect.
He explains religion while seeming to assume the role of God. Thus he espouses the truth of the christianity in terms of its ability to demythologize religion due to its scapegoat being innocent-- it is the exception that proves, and thereby reveals, the rule. But if this is the Truth of christianity, then where does God come in? Is the truth of christianity-- and accordingly the God thereof-- simply the recognition of its historical significance?
@ManACanadian But Islam gains converts through the sword. It is even a requirement of that religion, and thus, it is a step back towards violence. In fact, it blames non-believers for their ills, and makes scapegoats of the outsiders. Christianity morality is universal. It requires its adherents to treat non-Christians the same way that it treats Christians. Not true of either of the Judaism or Islam.
Thus, the way you feel about the USA. It gives unity to Moslems through scapegoating.
@xxueajsqxx Totally with you on this... I actually can't believe that such a radical thinker could be so appallingly conservative - very disappointing indeed!
@MsRedjay I think he's a little bit beyond petty left/right politics. It's actually fascinating that such a person could espouse these observations. The real problem with the world is the simple shallowness of thought that runs through our lives. There must be innumerable religious people who are creative and dynamic in their own way. Decrying religion does not the same as promoting your own intellect.
@MsRedjay I'm confused, are you disappointed that critical thinking can lead to "appallingly conservative" (whatever that is) conclusions, or are you disappointed in your inability to be intellectually honest?
His memetic theory is a universal true. We can see it clearly everywhere we go. Now, desires are boosted by our environment which are ultimately a result of our passions and necessities as well. I'd only point that our primitive needs are not fostered by this memetic desire, and in this sense these needs dispute with our desires the legitimacy of our actions.
@zigsauer Yes, but don't the Khazarians and Maranos organze hundreds of years after the time of, need I say it here, JC? It's not a competition, we're talking about ideas that change the way people are thinking.
The non-violent "technique" of Gandhi was efficient because he was fighting against England ... but if he was fighting against the roman's empire ? do you think that non-violence would be efficient ?
@77scar It was in some circumstances. Read Josephus' accounts of Jewish nonviolent actions before or during the life of Jesus. Sometimes they succeeded, sometimes not. We might say that they had a better success rate than war.
@77scar every situation is unique and requires a unique response. Non-violent if you can or strong action when required. It might have worked against the Romans because the invader needs the cooperation of the invaded nation.
Couldnt agree more that Girard is ultimately one of the most enlightening critical minds of recent times, but his answer to the question of how we turn the tide of, im guessing, the disintergration of the world, is to simply "behave like Christians" , has mutilated my admiration for him. Dissapointing.
I believe a better answer, the truth Girard was trying to get at, was "behave like Christ". Just as Gandhi said " I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ. "
@dajoclothing Ghandi was in error when he said that. Obviously not everyone in the English Empire was Christian although England was known as a "christian" nation. He should of said send me some christians who are not nominal or cultural christians. Because to be christian is to be christ- like .

Very intelligent man with great insights.
It is a real pity that he is so ignorant about Islam.
Islam does not use Christianity. It is arrogant to assume Christians have the Truth. No one group can claim that since Truth belongs to God.
Same God of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
And the honor of being the BIGGEST terrorist in the contemporary world goes of course to the biggest weapons producer and seller; US of A.
