Im haveing a problem with mine...I used a buzzer insted of a LED and my buzzer only comes on with light is shineing on the photocell and goes off when i take the light off...I need it to work the ways yours is and im preety confused...Please help?
Where else can you see great stuff like this on youtube, so informational, and well made,. Everyone should watch every one of this guy's videos while they are still available, and click on a few adverts in the video so he can make some money at it too!!! Thanks Afrotechmods, keep them coming.
@175726 Hey why doesn't my circuit work? i put the MOSFET like in the diagram... the source has the resistor(400 ohms) the drain doesn't have an input put on the other side has the LED and the gate is the photresistor what am i doing wrong?
in addition to below post: for a laser door alarm or "trip wire" you will need to speed up the on/off. still use a 50% duty cycle but increase the frequency. 50% Duty @ 1hz (500ms on/500ms off), 50% Duty @ 2Hz (250ms/250ms off), 50% etc... at a certain point you wont even see flicker. however, even though at 50% duty, the life can still be shortered because at a certain poin the diode starts averaging power and the lifespan will go down. keep the freq. at 2-10Hz
There is only one issue with it. Most laser diodes have limited life of 1.14yrs- 5.7yrs of continuous use. while it's a bit more work you should use a microcontroller to turn it on for 500ms, check the input (Cds cell) and use conditional loops, then set output high or low to the MOSFET, then turn it off for 500ms. This will effectively double the life, you could add larger delays. This is basically square wave PWM (Pulse width modulation) with a 50% duty cycle at a very low frequency (1Hz).
@Afrotechmods the project is really nice :)) can you please give us the exact materials used in that project and their respective specifications?? We were just confuse about the circuit diagram ...
We are currently doing the project. Plese response ASAP! thank you very much ... :))
i have done this too. its very easy(though im an engineering student). i even wrote my own code with none coding experience! so all hail arduino and its easyness
I would like to build a laser tripwire that would activate a linear actuator to operate a trigger mechanism on a coyote box trap. I would like to power the circut with a 12 volt battery. I am a 15 year old high school freshman so if you could I would need a response in " electric-ease" not too complicated. Also, if you could recommend a source for components. Thanks
I am looking for a circuit that would allow a laser to start an 12v alarm when the beam is cut, but i want the alarm to keep on, as the beam hits again the LDR .Mainly my problem is that when the beam hits again the LDR the alarm stops.
Same as in your video.! Do you know a way to make it work continuously after the beam has been broken.?
@killlbot It seems like the one he used will work perfectly for you because if your run the equation 5 x (180/180+2200) you get .37v which will not be enough to open the gate, but when you hit 2780 ohms, it will open gate, his in ambient was 4500 ohms, either resistance will trigger with voltage needed.
LOL my cats always scratch at my bedroom door and tear up the carpet when I go to bed. This would be perfect, if I could find a way to connect a spray bottle and motor to this they would stop Tearing up my damned carpet!
@Afrotechmods: thanks for uploading this vid. Can i used this circuit as a single pulse input for my 74LS90 counter?my circuit would be a switch that shorts the input-pin and the ground for each count. if so, do i still need some additional filters to have a clean pulse input? great vids!! : )
hey why type of resistor and transistor should i get?? can sombody show me the link from like radioshack or somthing! please!!!!!! ill sub to you if you do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Afrotechmods So, can you set this at the main door of ur house and this will act as an alarm, if it's wired to a speaker with a beep system?, i'm more into programming dude... but this is interesting
Google T = RC . Also, use half of an LM358 op amp instead of a mosfet for this cct , use the other half for the delay Look it up! they are cheap - I bought 30 for under $7.50 delivered to my door!
is there any device that only allows current to flow under some conditions? something like maybe if you get less than 3 volts in the input the output is 0 but when you get more than 3V it acts like it has no significant resistance.
or maybe a device with 3 legs that the ratio between two of them will have an effect on the 3rd which is the formal output.
sorry if I'm asking a kids question, I am new in electronics.
Could this work with a big ass MOSFET? Im going to be using an IRFP250 for this and i wanna hook it up with an external power supply to trigger a mechanical siren! Keep them bitches outta my room!
sorry man, I'm a total noob here. With transistors like this one, do you need 2 separate power sources? like from source to gate and from source to drain

Great Tutorial! @Afrotechmods First off, my hat is off to you for replying to all your comments! It's appreciated! Secondly, the motor I'm running is not big at all.
