just watched this and loved it. But for some unexplainable reason i feel i would have liked it twice as much if Adrien Brody had played this role instead. don't get me wrong Ryan was great ,it was just a weird feeling i kept having throughout the whole movie.
Ryan Gosling's best movie to date. This is a wonderfully fantastic movie that shines through the concept that if the movie doesn't have a sudden twist, it fails. Gosling is one of the greatest actors of our generation, and with his recent role in "Drive", Gosling just gets better and better.
This movie made me a fan of Ryan Gosling even more. I always thought Ryan was a nice person during interviews. I would see a a bit of his movies here or there on TV. Never fully watched any movies with him in it until Half Nelson.
This movie is a WASP's wet dream. I can just see the meeting in my head... "Its Dangerous Minds... but with a guy... AND he is a drug addict." Its a really good film and very affecting but it is a total white persons jack off fantasy.
I wouldn't have given a damn if one of my teachers was drug addicted. My teacher of biology was the best and she was a medecin addicted..Who cares?A pathology or a sickness of a person is not a weakness,it might be a strength.Just a thought
@dannypurple1979 Haven't seen "Dangerous Minds" but I assume it's one of those teacher-saves-minority-students movies. While I can see how this movie has those elements to it, I don't think it really glorifies or idealizes Gosling's character. The girl he gets to know does some soul-searching and growing up, but he's not necessarily to thank for that. He's also arguably not even a very good teacher. The classroom scenes were sometimes painful.
@ladylivia100 I was waiting for someone to say that. The Notebook is actually pretty good. Its the only NIcolas Sparks based movie i actually like. Men usually stay away (im a straight man) because girls drool over the movie, but the story is actually pretty good. I thought it was lame till I watched it.
@robhartjr1993 You can like it, Hopefully,I have the right not to and I can be abled to say that it was pretty lame because I watched it,I have never put forward an opinion without knowing what I am talking about.Another thing...I ignored that straight men and homosexuals had different tasts.I thought that an opinion had NO SEXUAL ORIENTATION and movies are not made to highlighten the ideas of some niche.
@ladylivia100 wow look at you trying to disect every little word to attack me. Fucking idiot. Who said anything that was offensive to sexual orientations. I put it in parenthesis because mostly homosexuals like that movie over straight men. Nothing wrong with saying that. Go fucking kill yourself you elusive troll. You try to make points and sound relevant but you're just an idiot that tries to put words in other peoples typing. Merry Christmas, sit on a knife.
@robhartjr1993 Sorry,Santa will not deliver knives this year.I was intrigued by your purpose,I didn't mean to attack you. There is a thing called irony but i guess you ignore it and as a result your only way to respond is insulting me.Such lack of arguments makes me laugh and makes me feel sorry for you.
@robhartjr1993 HA you are a total fag. Not because you watched the Notebook but because you had to prefice it by stating that you were NOT gay. Sounds like somebody needs to tone down their sexual fears (the one where you must make SURE that everybody knows youre not gay) ladylivia100 on behalf of all men I apologize for this giant fag.
Ive seen this twice once when i was 16 and again today, decent plot, but its more about the characters but saying that the characters are never realy devoloped the ending is a little wide open, it could have gone a little bit braver. But i enjoyed the performaces i liked this movie not the best but i would tell a friend to check it so my score is a 7/10 just my 2cents....
"Our next flick is not just the best film I saw all week, but easily the best film I've seen all year, if not one of the ten best I've seen in a decade."
But then, oh wow! wait til the second half of the movie starts, thats when you will cry.your.ass.OFF!
I love the part "knock knock...who's there......the interrupting cow.......the interrupting *moos* cow who?" HAHA LOL love it....totally suggest this for anyone who's tired of seen one too many cliche-ridden family dramas.
This movie is amazing. Broken Social Scene definitely made it much better. Without their music, you wouldn't be able to see, hear and feel the way this movie actually should be seen, heard and felt. It sounds a bit weird, but yeah... that's my feeling/opinion about it.
Ryan Gosling is an effortlessly versatile actor. He gives his characters a distinctive personality as if they were actual people living in the modern world. Mad props to that kind of talent. A true artist.
@Mikinho1 If you google his comment you'll find that it's also been said on a lot of other websites. He's just copied it and posted it on Youtube trailers to try and get thumbs up.
While many actors tend to play drug addicts in an over-the-top, romanticized, stereotypical fashion, Ryan Gosling's performance was just so subtle, so nuanced and just simply fucking brilliant. One of the best performances of the decade.
@ayansb I get what you mean, I like true and subtle acting. I think actors and directors need to take on that idea and be realistic in what they deliver to the audience.
..Amazing, enlightened movie! Thank You. More teachers should be like the one Ryan Gossling portrays; however they are protected by tenure and teach nothing but drivel to our students. :)
@fabiangotslapped A half nelson is a wrestling move. It's where your opponent has you in a sort of grip (their arm under yours exerting pressure on your neck) and it's very hard to break free from. In the movie, I think it's the drugs which have the main charcater (Gosling) in a metaphorical half nelson hold.
It's incredible how Ryan Gosling does everything with perfection..every role that he did was so great, astonishing...never seen an acter like that before..gosling is a revolution
This movie fucking sucked you mother fcking brain washed idiots with pseudo intellect thinking this film is some master piece? you fucking pieces of sht. This movie was a complete failure and it's almost embarrassing to know that it stole over 2.5 million in the box office.
Rock on Ryan Gosling go back to being a fcking mousketeer the only reason the movie is remotely liked is because of your fcked up acting and some directors "edgy" point of view.
This movie will be in my heart (& top 10)forever. Words cant express the talent of the young mr. Gosling. I was speechless after watching it. And boy...was Shareeka Epps a good match! Beautiful small movie, no cliches no cover ups and no pleasing,- nor intelligence-insulting of the watchers. Chapeau for Half Nelson!
Great film, I know the film was made locally -Brooklyn, Jersey, and Queens- the story and everything about the film seems like places I have been and things I have experienced. One of the most powerful films - a great performance by the entire cast.
This is one of my favorite films of all time. Moving, heartbreaking, beautiful. When I saw the cover, I thought it would be another movie about the nice white teacher teaching a bunch of inner city black kids and helping them achieve their dreams... I was wrong. SO amazing. Love.
This might be a long shot, but does anyone happen to know what kind of glasses Gosling is wearing at the beginning of the trailer? I really do like them. haha
I remember hearing about this movie when it was up for awards. Now seeing the trailer (which was found because I have BSS songs favourited lol), I'm actually pretty interested... Although I have a feeling it might have a sad ending...

@fabiangotslapped A half nelson is a wrestling move. It's where your opponent has you in a sort of grip (their arm under yours exerting pressure on your neck) and it's very hard to break free from. This film is seriously magnificent. i suggest anyone with the ability to view this movie now. It's incredibly inspiring, jaw-dropping, brilliant and heartbreaking. Ryan Gosling truly lights up the film with an incredible performance.
