SO awesome! I swooned when Luke's voice dropped and he said -- with the right mix of romance, longing and sincerity -- "I think about you all the time."
CBS and P&G should be ashamed of themselves for what they did to this story, Luke and Noah should be allowed to show affection. Boycott Proctor and Gamble products until they do right by Luke and Noah.
i think the main reason the daytime nets seem so homophobic is due to young kids at home...not saying i agree, i'm just saying that why i think they are reluctant to push the envelope. some ppl see degrees of love and not depth.
Yes, I forgot to mention the towel fight and the kiss we never saw. But is still seems so unnatural. Like " how can we make a show that is politicaly correct without making it seem homoerotic?". I don't see the point. Don't bother. I't makes it seem like all gay relationships are that fake and asexual. But hey, what can you expect? After all it is a soap.
CBS and ATWT are in a difficult position. ATWT is always one of the two lowest rated soaps. In fact, after their contract expires in Sept 2008, the 50+ yr old series may be canceled.
ATWT can't afford to lose any more viewers. Sadly, loyal soap viewers are older, conservative women -- many who hate the gay storyline. Younger pro-gay viewers work when ATWT airs and FF past the ads.
Not all networks are that conservative though. Look at Showtime with Queer as Folk and The L Word. I'm norwegian and I think it's strange that the US has a reputation of being so liberated, but realy is not. Our tv shows don't dumb the gay characters down.
The sad simple answer is because this is the US. Until recently, homophobic Republicans controlled every branch of government -- as well as the FCC which controls the airwaves.
After the FCC fined CBS a record amount when Janet Jackson showed parts of her breast, networks got very conservative. In fact, I was shocked and impressed that the kisses were so realistic.

Showtime, HBO, Cinemax, Playboy, etc aren't considered networks because they're paid premium cable channels. The networks (CBS,NBC,FOX,ABC,CW,MyNetwork) are publicly accessible on any TV, without cable.
Basic cable stations like MTV are less restrictive. The premium channels are the least regulated. Janet Jackson could've shown her breast and more on cable without being punished.
I didn't know Showtime and HBO isn't considered as networks. That explains a lot. Thank you! I have never heard about friends forever. I looked it up, the guy who plays Ulf is quite a star i Norway now actually. But I think gay scandinavian films have gotten boring, unoriginal and predictable. They are all about gay teens meeting at summercamp. And I don't think Norway has made a gay film in years.
Neither does our neighbor, Canada. Fareed Zacharia of Newsweek said that the US differs with most of W. Europe on the 3 G's: Guns, God and Gays. Sadly, US media is the most influential in the world.
My girlfriend lived in Sweden for 10 yrs and was amazed. I'm equally amazed watching Scandinavian films like Friends Forever. While homophobia exists, it's so different than what we see here.
I was impressed because I thought CBS would stop at the first kiss, having already made history. For what it's worth, the first kiss was split into two days. It's also implied that they've kissed several times off screen. For example, the TV Guide description implied that Win was angered by seeing them kiss in the forest.

I also just remembered that Luke and Noah did something that no straight couple can do on US TV. They were topless closeup, skin touching skin -- dripping wet (the Snyder pond episode where they fought over a towel).
That scene cannot occur with a straight couple because the woman's breasts would be exposed. I always found it silly that a woman would cover her chest with sheets after sex. I mean, she was naked during sex, right?
Merchant and Ivory made a conscious effort to show the gay lovers walking around nude after sex in the film, Maurice. They told the NY Times, if you can't depict the characters naturally, why have the sex scene at all? They also specifically mention how silly the sheets were.

Why cant they show any affection for eachother? This is such a silly thing about soap operas. They have only kissed TWO times!
