I was in grade school when the tunnel opened. We took a field trip to the tunnel and watched the opening ceremony, including the Governor and a bunch of old cars drive through it. I lived in Frisco at the time.
I've driven thru the tunnel twice. Once on a one way trip in 94 to Denver to bring my sister my mother's Chrysler New Yorker (that trip I only went thru the eastbound side) then a 2nd and 3rd time in 01 and 02 both ways. It's an amazing tunnel.
I hate it when jerk off's dont know how to go through the tunnel... they go slow through it but as soon as they are through BAM!!!! slams the gas and gets back on the Colorado autobahn
thats what I call that stretch of I-70 more east bound than west but both ways everyone hawls ass
that tunnel was opened in 1973 when I lived in dillon colorado and used to drive to work in denver. I was one of the first sets of cars to drive through it when it was opened.
lived in a condo against the mountain in dillon. silver queen condominums.
There are emergency doors in case of emergency, and hazardous trucks are required to go over the pass weather permitting. In the summer months traffic is backed up going back to Denver, during the Fall season, and ski season. I'm a 4th generation Coloradoan, so lot of memories of this place!
Only thing you forgot to post about this tunnel is, how long is this tunnel? It seems to be at least a mile or 11/2 miles in length, but I'm just making as much of an educated guess as I can.
Still really enjoy this video, of course! (especially since I've never driven through the Eisenhower Tunnel, but've driven through some interesting interstate tunnels through the Appalachian Mountains)
so are the doors in the sides?

Has there ever been an accident on the highway that caused people to get stuck in traffic INSIDE the tunnel? that'd be the creepiest feeling ever!

in 1973 i lived in Dillon. Then moved to Denver. I was one of the first to drive through this tunnel when it opened.
have they ever had a major truck accident in that tunnel yet?
i remember on the way up from denver you would enter on a clear day and on the other side drive into a blinding snow storm.
the tunnel took the place of Love Land pass.
I miss Colorado. I am retiring in a few years and will drive coss country again. Starting my first day retired. leaving after retirement party.

we built a condo in dillon that is across the way from a FINA Gas station. Is that station still there. It is on the main drag.

Why is there a traffic light just before the tunnel?
NASCARfan22k 3 years ago
It lets drivers know which lanes are open :)

hehe you had so many chances to overtake that slow car in front of you ... your speed must have been lower than 70 KPH. ^^
Abstandhalterin 4 years ago
the speed limit is pretty low in the tunnel, and its being watched all the time,so you dont wanna push it hard
jon1151 4 years ago 2
the speed limit is 55 MPH through the tunnel
