His voice is thoroughly shot to hell but in my book he still sounds great. His voice has always had ACDC-ish raspiness to it. It works, but what doesn't work is everybody else's voices in the band completely gone. Anybody who has listened to the '08 verson of hair of the dog knows that the rest of the band are the one's who can't sing anymore. The chorus is nonexistant. Look it up (appeared in Rock Band).
What do people expect?,he's much older now, they recorded this over 35 years ago, with ago everything falls apart, but this still rocks,Rock On Nazareth!
hey, butt fk. i'd like to see you fkn do better asshole. I partied with Dan McCaferty in 1978 and The man is an Icon all over the world. So remember when you don't know what your talking about shut your pie hole son.peace out
@blica1--I saw that same documentary in my pharmacy class, where they had the special camera on Steven's throat and they show his vocal cords vibrating. It's slower with the low notes, but with the high notes he's smashing toward the end of "Dream On" they're vibrating like CRAZY! It was REALLY fascinating!
only one man can sing like he did when he was younger, and that's Steven Tyler..in fact i just recently saw this science show on national geographic which they used his vocal power and abilities as a prime example of human physical endurance...they actually placed a tiny camera in his mouth and you actually see his vocal chords at work while he screams octave exercises ! his voice is in shape because he takes care of it and tours often, whereas Nazareth doesn't.. lets all give this dude a break
what most people don't realize about vocal chords is that over time, the muscle itself is weakened, even for your average shmoe who doesn't sing for a living, your voice gets , for lack of a better word, and i'll use a rock n roll term,"raucnhier" with age..it's a biological fact of life..his voice doesn't sound bad at all considering what he must have put it through back in the 70's..whiskey, smoking doobs, coke, eating tons of groupie pussy, etc..and ofcourse singing at the top of his lungs..
@blica1 I don't think he was a heavy drug user or drinker, but yeah, the other stuff is all true. He's always smoked a lot of regular cigarettes and that's also hard on the voice over time. Come to think of it, why isn't Dan dead of lung cancer? He must have titanium in his lungs.
he's singing in a lower key-not surprising after 40yrs.i wouldn't say his voice is shot.i remember a local dj predicting his voice wouldn't last-that was 35yrs ago-still sounds ok to me.
I actually thought Dan McCafferty when he was younger sounded more like Steven Tyler of Aerosmith than either Bon Scott or Brian Johnson of AC/DC. Listen to Nazareth's "Love Leads to Madness" sometime and you'll notice the similarity. Peace.
His voice is much better in real, I was really surprised when I saw them a few weeks ago live on stage cause in most youtube-videos the voice sounds not so good.
I've heard him sing in videos of the same year as this, and it would appear that this show his voice is a little off {but still great}. I wonder if he was a bit under the weather, or recovering from an illness?
@123Boudicca Saw them in 77, 78, 79, 80,and 81. On their 25 year tour. Met them on the Cinema tour. Really great bunch of guys. Heres to another 25 years.
I thought it sounded great for being so ancient. Good god, I'm sure it was a challenge just to stand up that long, let alone play a rock song. Not sure what people expected outta them!!
@tom080955 well at least he lasted a helluva lot longer Brian Johnson. 10 years ago (Move me, Boogaloo), his voice was every bit as powerful as it was on Hair of the Dog.
Dan still has it, AWSOME vid uploader cheers for taking an old man back in time

My first impression was: "That's a really sad vocal performance, of a once gifted band.
They are only a caricature of their early days."
But the more I listen to this version, the more I get used to it, and I must say, it has a kind of queer appeal.
