Thanks! The face and voice match now. Those were the days! Dad had a Sunoco, mom was driving me to preschool in an F6 with white wing and interior Daytona, and the race cars were real and cool. One Christmas I got both Rock-em-Sockem's AND an SSP Superbird car.
NASCAR today is a fucking joke, if you didn't know NASCAR banned the winged cars because no-one wanted to see "the red-headed step child" Dodge's and Plymouth's wiping up the competition every weekend. But that is exactaly what happened later because it is a Chevy/Ford world. MoPar has always been #1 in racing but always gets screwed cause they want them at #3. From the '63 D-100 Dragmaster truck, Lightweight 68 Hemi Dart's/Barracuda's, The High and Mighty cars, Winged cars, they DOMINATED!
@SuperBallDeep actually the winged cars were banned soon after dodge came out with the superbird and then after the 71 season both ford and gm were making prototypes for nascar for the next season. the nascar management did not like that. for what ever reason. if i recall my auto history it was both dodge and gm cryed fawl about ford engine's. btw gm has alway's tooken a backseat to dodge and ford. also ford was the only american company that had a near total domination for sanctioned racing
Daytonas/Superbirds in essence were factory cars, homogligated for the street, so thats why they both are around today in street trim. I wish that Ford would have ran that SOHC 429 just to see what that DOHC Race Hemi would have done, if it was 600 HP imagine what DOHC would have done, 750, 800? 900 HP? These cars would have been completely unstoppable.. God bless Ma MoPar...
Just to clairify, Dodge had the 68 Charger, Ford soon came out with the faster Talladega, so MoPar pulled all the stops and introduced the sexiest, fastest, baddest car to ever drive on this planet, the '69 Dodge Charger Daytona, Plymouth followed up with the '70 Road Runner Superbird. It was a 1-2 shot that ruled NASCAR, till NASCAR said no more. Another fact is Ford made a SOHC 429 they were gonna run, till MoPar pulled out the DOHC 426, NASCAR said no way that was going to run.. Imagine that!
@SuperBallDeep Some clarifications: 1) Chrysler's 426 CI Hemi was NOT a DOHC, not a SOHC. It was a pushrod motor with canted valves. 2) The Charger 500 is what I believe you are referring to. It was an interim solution until the winged Charger Daytona was available. Then the Plymouth Superbird showed up. 3) It has been documented numerous times, although I regretfully can't provide a source as I write this, that 200mph was recorded right out of the showroom for these Mopars.
@ramairfour William Conrad was the guy narrating. If you’re old enough he was the actor to play Frank Cannon on an early 70's detective series on CBS.
i know it's 41 years ago now but if the look of CHRYSLER WING CARS on the big tracks doesn't give you an erection.......might be time to re-up your viagra script.
when toyota first joined the races they were aloud to use ford engines, too bad challenger isnt aloud in nascar series, and its REALLY too bad that hemi is outlawed forever/
@dodgedart74 To really have an answer for this, you must take a look at the long history of Nascar and GM. I mean, go way back to the late 50s. Nascar was dominated by Mopars and Fords for a very long time back then. GM then "whined". In time, to around the 70s, Nascar biased the rules towards GMs heavily. The template you see today is based off a Chevy Lumina. If foreign cars are allowed to compete, like Toyota, wait until Porsche or MB or BMW joins.
@dodgedart74 And note that during Nascar's early days, say until the late 80s or so, most teams borrowed High Perf engine knowledge from the professional drag racing teams.
yeah the hp is way up but somehow the speed i way down? wh cant a guy like bill france be back?stock cars going as fast as they can go i mean put stock chargers stock impalas stock touruses back on the track and get them jap car out why would they alow toyota to enter? have you seen there cars? they dont go broom rumble rumble they go imgaaayimgagagaaaay gaaaygagaaay rrr blam! hey kim i wreck yo cara!
They put out about 550-600hp with 7-liter hemi-head engines. Dodge/Plymouth ran Chrysler's 426 Hemi and Ford/Mercury ran the Boss 429. Though the stock versions were officially rated lower, in reality both engines put out 450-500hp (gross) and upwards of 500lb-ft of torque in stock trim.
Great vid! NASCAR basically ceased being great & truly entertaining when they started building custom-built racecars rather than making them from actual STOCK cars. (It's National Association of STOCK Car Auto Racing, NOT National Association of CUSTOM-BUILT-RACECAR Auto Racing, for christ's sake!)
The final nail in the coffin of NASCAR's past greatness was when it became an overcommercialized series, really commencing around the early 1990's, imo.
I remember hearing that The Birds were banned and Hemi was also banned as they were concidered an unfair advantage to the chev and ford boys.I will tell you one car that gave dodge a good run was not a chev,It as the Telladagas from ford, between the two makers, they made some great racing. Allison and Petty...what a pair
They were not exactly "stock" cars, real stock cars died about '64 with the death of Fireball. They were safer than their elder models but by no means stock. They were tube added cars which could be made from a showroom car. But I share your sentiments, the cars of today are bricks patterned after IROC with snotnosed silver spoons attached to the steering wheels. The real racers can be found on the dirt tracks and at places like Oswego with the supermods. Yep I know how you feel.
try going to a dealer now and try buying a car that raced on sunday. I hope nascar goes down hill and lifts the retritions. These car today are not STOCK CARS just a name tag. Cant even tell them apart.
They are silhouette, like the old GR.5 in the 60's&70's ;) So even there, the acronym still right (National Association for Silhouette Car Auto Racing.)
But I don't like the look of COT, mostly the front: Get that nose back and the aerodynamic race...
I wish the Speed Channel would air some of these 60s/70s year races on tv. No computers that told them everything.. just a Walkie Talkie.. PLEASE SPEED CHANNEL.... Die Hard MOPAR FAN
funny guys,i'm not a nascar fan, loved it way back when, but i'm a quarter mile fan,i know iknow, left turn straight, way back when guys had a smoke and remains of what thay ran in the backwoods, today thay are in shape, have to be,athletes? maybe not like bill romanowski, but still have to be fit,to run ovals for hours,MBDKS,try it some time, racing is not as easy as it looks
It's interesting that, without exception, every "Athlete" who has tried to drive a Cup car for longer than 3 laps comes back with the attitude that NASCAR is indeed a sport and the drivers ARE athletes in every sense of the word.
Auto racing belongs in sort of a second category of "sports." Like horseback riding, luge sledding, etc. These things don't make same kinds of athletic demands on the participants as something like pro boxing or football. But they still take a lot of talent & practice, and they demand a hell of a lot of physical motor control & conditioning for the particular activity.
And as for NASCARs in the 1960s/70s?
Not easy. Manual steering & brakes, 130-degree cockpits, unsafe tires, etc.
you obviously know very little about the physical demands of auto racing. Nowadays the true professional racing driver spends a lot of time in the gym. Physical fitness is extremely important if the driver is to keep two tons of steel pointing in the right direction for 8 or 10 hours at a time.

@RevengeofGothzilla I don't care who you sleep with, I don't care who you marry ... it's your life, live it as you must. Why must you must spend hours of time searching for debate over 3 year old comments.
How about this, yes we agree the old Nascar is the best ... the new is too much of a corporate homoginized bland, no flavored, lack of innovation, boring Nascar!
clap 3 times...s pin around and say the name of the person you want to be with forever...post this on 7 pages and this saturday that person will suddely relize how much you mean to them... you dont do this... that person will think the oppiste and never want to see you again... it worked for mee! just tryy it!
I am sick of openwheel fans shitting on Nascar. If openwheel is so great then why are all the big names coming to Nascar? And once they come to Nascar they usually can't handle the cars.
its normal for red necks to think nascar is a sport... if you check the united states IQ.. rednecks in the south have the lowest IQs in the united states therefor they think that nascar is a sport. and only red necks in the south watch nascar.. put them together and you find that stupid red necks with extremely low IQs watch nascar and claim it to their graves to be a sport
Yeh, NASCAR is not a sport. The cars just drive themselves! I don't know what bboyjay69's problem is, but maybe he should get his IQ checked before he starts to talk/type. Any activity that involves human action in a competitive environment is a sport. But I do agree with bboyjay69 when he/she says NASACR ain't a sport. Because its a passion and if you don't like it then why are you watching it for?
Well I am from the south, (Alabama to be exact) but apparently my IQ is a bit higher than yours. I mean, even a redneck NASCAR fan from the south knows sentence structure and punctuation!
Before you say things like that, you should learn the language! Why don't you learn to spell IQ and learn what it actually is!
it's not a sport, it's a passion, just like loving cars, is it a crime if i like to work on my car and make it last for a long time and restore old cars for more then 12 hours a day?
I doubt those days will ever happen again. Most dealers want to have cars they can make money off of and vehicles that use alot of feul don't sell like they used to
yep, in 1979, wyhen tv coverge stepped in, the engine size rescriction kicked on around 1978, 30 years ago, NASCAR is going downhil anyway, good-year can't make a decent tire, good races get dropped from the schedule in favor of some cookie-cutter, when nascar already has like 7 of em, 30 years ago, 85% of the nascar schedules were short tracks in the south, now only 5% of the sprint cup is short-tracks, the rest are ovals and superspeedways in the mid-west and coasts
the California Speedway project broke ground in 1992, the project was completed in 1996, the cup guys had test sessions in 1997, the first winston cup race was held in 1998
i may be wrong on when the project broke ground, i know tat kansas speedway broke ground in 1996, and it took them 4 years to complete, the first race was an indy car race held in 2000
Fontana confuse my because is the California 500... And The California 500 was held in November 21 in 1976, but... On what track?...
It's not be at the California speedway but... The Indy's twins, the Ontario Motor Speedway! Hey the land where that track was is now in Fontana city due to modification of cities limits... But that was 2 super oval, and it's likes 2 miles between the two...
oh man WHERE'S THE REST OF THIS COOL FOOTAGE?

@RevengeofGothzilla I don't care who you sleep with, I don't care who you marry ... it's your life, live it as you must. Why must you must spend hours of time searching for debate over 3 year old comments.
How about this, yes we agree the old Nascar is the best ... the new is too much of a corporate homoginized bland, no flavored, lack of innovation, boring Nascar!
Have a good life!

I agree NASCAR is the premimer racing sport we have the higher purser better fans and better racing.
Nascar235 4 years ago
I am sick of openwheel fans shitting on Nascar. If openwheel is so great then why are all the big names coming to Nascar? And once they come to Nascar they usually can't handle the cars.
k9feces 4 years ago
its normal for red necks to think nascar is a sport... if you check the united states IQ.. rednecks in the south have the lowest IQs in the united states therefor they think that nascar is a sport. and only red necks in the south watch nascar.. put them together and you find that stupid red necks with extremely low IQs watch nascar and claim it to their graves to be a sport

YOU MUST A FUCKING COMMIE NASCAR OR RACING IN GENERAL IS WOLRD WIDE YOU DUMB ASS now try again dipshit
dirthound25 4 years ago 4
Yeh, NASCAR is not a sport. The cars just drive themselves! I don't know what bboyjay69's problem is, but maybe he should get his IQ checked before he starts to talk/type. Any activity that involves human action in a competitive environment is a sport. But I do agree with bboyjay69 when he/she says NASACR ain't a sport. Because its a passion and if you don't like it then why are you watching it for?

Redneck NASCAR fans from the south, huh?
Well I am from the south, (Alabama to be exact) but apparently my IQ is a bit higher than yours. I mean, even a redneck NASCAR fan from the south knows sentence structure and punctuation!
Before you say things like that, you should learn the language! Why don't you learn to spell IQ and learn what it actually is!
pettyfan43 4 years ago 4
You tell him! Also, got to love Alabama. Home of the superspeedway!

it's not a sport, it's a passion, just like loving cars, is it a crime if i like to work on my car and make it last for a long time and restore old cars for more then 12 hours a day?

I doubt those days will ever happen again. Most dealers want to have cars they can make money off of and vehicles that use alot of feul don't sell like they used to

The late 60's early 70's were THE time to watch nascar. Just bloody amazing.... no restrictions on engine size or anything...
Zeriouslly 5 years ago
yep, in 1979, wyhen tv coverge stepped in, the engine size rescriction kicked on around 1978, 30 years ago, NASCAR is going downhil anyway, good-year can't make a decent tire, good races get dropped from the schedule in favor of some cookie-cutter, when nascar already has like 7 of em, 30 years ago, 85% of the nascar schedules were short tracks in the south, now only 5% of the sprint cup is short-tracks, the rest are ovals and superspeedways in the mid-west and coasts

It's a bit right, but it's call an exportation: Nothing bad there...
I take a look at the track in 1976. A lots of tracks have still there...
Daytona,Fontana,Bristol,Richmond,Atlanta, Darlington,Martinsville,Talladega,Dover, Lowe,Nashville and Pocono. All that still there!
What is not there: Riverside and Rockingham speedway.
therrydicule 3 years ago
the California Speedway project broke ground in 1992, the project was completed in 1996, the cup guys had test sessions in 1997, the first winston cup race was held in 1998
i may be wrong on when the project broke ground, i know tat kansas speedway broke ground in 1996, and it took them 4 years to complete, the first race was an indy car race held in 2000
Rcrby525 3 years ago
Shit ,you are right.
