The supposed "white screen of death" is probably on the end of the recording they were mass producing, to tell the engineer to stop the machines. The white noise is unrecorded, unerased tape - randomly magnetised particles. Any strange frequencies might have been used to calibrate recording/playback equipment.
I've got some VHS tapes where the white noise/static goes on for longer than 6-8 minutes. Some where its 1 to 2 minutes and some where it doesn't appear at all.
