Has anyone noticed how this sonatas 3rd movement literally has a cadenza, very similar in style to what Mozart did in his concertos?Makes me wonder if this wasnt a sketch for a concerto that Mozart decided to make into a sonata instead---
I saw the worst Rock band was playing in Grammy this year, but I saw many people were cheering for them. You cannot control other people's preference.
@matt7722 as well i heard the and felt the same way as you. But i dont feel that is a good way to appraoch this piece. Compare that to a vocal song. One knows immediately when a song is inspired or not, and true to the music, instead of self. We have no problem saying he/she massacred that piece. His way of interpretation is like singing a very dramatic piece as if it is a sweet song, or, even acting in a comedy and acting like a flower that wants only to be smelled, forgetting the punch lines.
@BassicStorm no...its ok...lacking the humor and finesse to carry that off.....he is more showing off himself than being true to the composer's intentions....this is suppposed to be a humorous piece...no one laughed at all. I would say at times his technique is good..but his ego interferes even with that at times....he's ok...
@lubneh Who knows? I've heard so many records of this sonata and I consider Lang lang's interpretation as surprising, but so emotional and soft, with great elegance.
@Exsilvis Yeah, I agree. Perhaps Lang Lang's physical talent may rival Horowitz or even those late big names, Hofmann, Rachmaninov. However, he is not making full use of it. I bet he spend a lot of time on the piano but not away from the piano reading the scores. He does not follow the score, most apparently in tempo, and it makes the music sounds awkward. Simply working hard in the wrong direction. Vladimir Sofronitsky and Glenn Gould said they spend little time on the piano yet they make mirac
LangLang definitely does not play the "interpreting the sheet music" game. He represents youth, energy and passion and he likes contrast and dynamics. And he's true to himself in all his playing. After all, there are hundreds of conservatory students that play perfectly "by the book" nut no one cares to hear them. Why bother if they just try to copy xxx(insert your favorite pianist here) on my CD shelf. Who knows? if Mozart is 25 and alive today, he may play very differently than
@AllegroDemolish Lang Lang nails it. Excellent articulation, nice light touch, nice dynamics. Mozart would've loved this performance. As for Lang Langs antics while he plays,I find them to be amusing,(I'll bet Mozart would've also)and in tune with what he's playing. He literally feels the music thru his body as he's playing---you can see that. And again,he produces good music,so who cares how he moves while he does it? LOL
I actually fall in love with this piece more and more watching Lang Lang perform it...The music doesn't seem like much on the page but Mozart couldn't possibly write out something like this perfomance on paper.
I'm playing this! I absolutely love Lang Lang's story-telling! In both his body communication and his the contrasting characters he creates in every part of the song!
I believe in music, I believe in you Lang Lang!!!
I wonder what mozart would have said if he saw that a asian played his piece... :)

There is no feeling in langs playing, compare this to Gould's or Esenbach's performance.
