A majority of the German aces kills were against Russian pilots. In many ways the Russian and American pilots were in the same boat. At the start of the war they were inexperienced and out-gunned. When the Germans went up against the Brits they found out they weren't Russian. That said the Germans had very good pilots. If Hitler had focused on the great weapons he did have instead of producing wonder weapons the Germans could have drugged the war out for another 5 years.
@BayouCityHtown The Russians were allies until mid 1941, The B of B climaxed in Sept 1940. The Empire pilots were not anywhere near as skilled as the Hun but they learn't
@BayouCityHtown while that is true if hitler focussed more on his wonder weapons he would have also changed the outcome significantly, his jet powered Messerschmidt was already invented in the beginning of the 1940's but Hitler in his arrogance thought he didn't have to use it to conquer Europe.
This movie got a 6.8 on IMDB and the cast includes plenty of top British actors. I think it's well made and worth a watch. I was a boy at the time and still remember them in the sky. They also use to tip the wings of doodle bugs (V1s) to steer them away from populated areas.

@AudieHolland I guess you'd rather watch a movie full of crap that didn't happen rather than focusing on the events that did.I'm pretty sure most everyone can predict what happens, we don't need you to state the obvious. Fact is this a very good movie.
Great movie. If it wasnt for this movie so many Spits and Hurricanes would have rotted beyond repair. I heard that many of the Spits they restored were at entrances to airbases and had concrete in the wheels. I was at Duxford which got "bombed" for the film. You can still see the foundation for the hanger they blew up (all rotted anyway). Even though the German aircraft were Spanish-built and powered by Merlins you still have to give it to them for using real aircraft. A B25 was the camera plane
@1952roser And the US 8th Airfoce did not start figting from England until Spring 42, you have to consider that the guy who wrote that comment is from Tennessee (nuff said) well maybe one more, that state is like Darwin's waiting room!
@Tennessee44444 Actually it was the pilots of the Polish Air Force who were the top scorers during the battle. It isn't widely known, but the Poles shot down like 800-1000 German planes while flying obsolete aircraft during the Polish Campaign.
@hipcat13 You are out of you're fucking mind the Germans did not lose almost 1000 acft to Poland in the Sept 39 campaign. Think about it, thats almost 30 German acft a day, not possible!!!
@hipcat13 That might be biased information, thats a much higher loss rate than the Germans had in the Battle of Britian per day (its just not possible)
@b52gf16c Sorry for misleading info. Looked up the references and turns out the Germans lost 20% of the attacking aircraft due to air combat (including ground fire I imagine) & another large portion to write-offs and accidents. Somewhat under 600 total losses for the campaign which is still impressive given the lack of proper equipment. Read "A Question of Honour" by Lynne Olson & Stanley Cloud and "The Forgotten Few" by Adam Zamoyski for details. I'm still looking for more precise info.
@hipcat13 No, Lock and Lacey were the top scorers in the battle. 303 you mean, which was the top scoring squadron. That figure is ridiculously exaggerated; shot down 1,000 German aircraft? The Poles brought battle experience with them when joining the RAF, but they'd come from an obsolescent air force that had been decimated. Perhaps they should have matched their pilots' courage by updating their flying washing machine aircraft; could've stemmed the tide just a bit.
@MrStig691 The British at the time thought the claims by the Polish squadrons were exagerated too. That is until Group Captain Vincent went up with them and saw how they tore into the German formations. You can find this in "The Forgotten Few" page 83 paragraph 1. I can back up what I say with references, unfortunately none of you can and I consider this discussion closed until someone can provide me with something other than hearsay. However you are correct about Lock and Lacey.
@Tennessee44444 Ohhh wait a minute Tennessee, that explains a whole hell of a lot!! The US 8Th Airforce did not start fighting from England until spring of 42!!!
@NobleKorhedron the GCVO on the end there does designate the fact that he's a member of an order of knighthood, but I'm not 100% sure. It's an interesting question.
@joshmarcinik: Yeah, I know what CXO/GCXO means - it's usually "Cross of the X Order" or "Grand Cross.....". I was wondering 'cause there's plenty of Knights who do go by 'Sir', when they use the title, including Alex Ferguson and Anthony Hopkins.
Wow. At 7:48-8:14 the "German" AFVs are a Bishop self-propelled gun and an M3 halftrack - I think they may actually have MG 42s for the infantry though. Really cool stuff!

I have created a music album which charts this same period of British history:
Britain At War - Darkest Hour by Rhesus Monkey. The album covers the Prelude to War, The King's Speech, The Battle of France, Dunkirk, The Battle of Britain, and of course The Blitz. I've also created a video to accompany Churchill's address to the United States in June 1941: 'The Old Lion'. You can view that video within my YouTube channel.
Personally I believe that without England in the war that America and Russia probably still could have won on their own. If the Americans and Russians both attacked from the east they would have made progress. Also, taking Britain wouldn't have been an easy task for Germany so America could probably have gone through Italy as well.
@Gordontrek I doubt the US would have even entered WW2 in Europe had Britain fell, & no taking Britain wouldn't have been an easy task there is evidence to suggest that the Royal Navy would have been largely responsible for Operation Sealions failure, but it would have been 2-3 days after the landings.
@Gordontrek The RN home fleet would've sailed from Scapa flow to reach the channel as soon as the Invasion had started, once they had arrived at the German fleet they would have wreaked absolute havoc among it, the German land forces already ashore would soon run out of supplies and the invasion would have collapsed and the British army would have counter attacked. They wouldn't even have reached the General Head Quarters line.
This movie has many great scenes in it. One of my favourites is at 8:07 when the elderly French couple looks at the relaxed Germans marching into their country.
One thiing that puzzled me later on in the movie--see if you all caught it. The sargent last his wife and kids when the shelter was bombed. The next scene was at the home of the senior officer played by Robert Shaw getting ready to go with the airfield with the same sargent who the night before had lost his family but he was acting like it was any ordinary day going to work. What am I missing here?
@cellofingers I've seen this movie a number of times, and yes, I've always wondered about that too. One scene, he's looking at a bombed-out, burning shell, and in the next he's with his CO, as calm as ever. The only thing I wondered about is just before he leaves with the CO he looks in at a family sleeping peacefully. I've never figured out if that's his family or the CO's... Maybe it's just a MAJOR continuity error.
Had Hitler approved Goering' bold invasion plan (the airborne one) or stayed focused on England and the RAF, once UK fell there would no way Germany could be invaded. Only Russia could beat them then.
Just noticed - this is not the original movie version - the titles in the opening sequence are not the originals. The words Battle of Britain were in red, white and blue and did NOT come screaming out of the screen at you!
50TNCSA - they used the Spanish version of the 109f (which they modified for the film to look like 109e's) as the Spanish Airforce was STILL flying them in 1968 when most of the filming was done.
@rockyblacksmith HH salute was a political salute, but the real salute with right hand is the international military salute. You can see it on this video watch?v=2vZ5unSN72I
Something's wrong with the aspect ratio, it's been squashed horizontally so the side views of planes look completely wrong. Instead of sleek fighting aircraft the Hurricanes end up looking like pregnant hippos. (Of course, people's heads also look wrong, but - aircraft are more interesting than people anyway) But thanks for uploading anyway!
It's kind of strange to see professional military pilots hopping out of the cockpits of fighter aircraft dressed in smart looking uniforms. I'm so used to seeing pressure suits and survival vests.
Admin,if u dont mind, can u put other war film like Casablanca,D-Day The Sixth of June,The Desert Fox,The Desert Rats,Force 10 from Naverone,Guns of Naverone,The Great Escape,In Harm's Way,Longest Day,Mosquito Squadron,Operation Pacific,Objective Burma,Patton,Sink The Bismarck,633 Squadron,Twelve O'Clock High,Victory,Yank in the RAF on here?If not here then can u put it at filesharing like rapidshare or medifire where we all can go there to download it?Cheers.
One of the greats for sure. I'm working a major motion picture about the late Robert Stanford-Tuck, a very exciting project indeed. Watch for a press release in a month or two.
Warum gibt es keine Untertiteln? I can understand a lot of the German, but not all of it. What happened to the subtitles? Otherwise, great film, thanks for posting. I cannot believe a version of this film exists that has no subtitles in the German speaking segments. Who is it for? A specific, bilingual target audience?
@eisenkreuzmusik if we are being honest germany got hammered a lot harder. the raf took german tactics in the blitz, and perfected them. a single raf bomber for example a halifax or a lancaster could carry as many bombs as 4 or 5 heinkel 111's, twice as far and 100mph faster..... and the raf had several thousand. imo hitler knew he couldnt defeat britain so didnt waste much effort, he tried to bomb them into peace talks but failed.
@hogalog I think the Germans pictured themselves invading Britain just like they did France. I think they thought they could really win a war after an invasion after beating Britain senseless in North Africa.
@eisenkreuzmusik the propagandists convinced the common body of the german people and forces that they could, but i think the high ranking men knew all along they couldnt do it and never intended to - even if they defeated the raf they stood no chance against the royal navy. many theorists now claim hitler just wanted to barter peace with britain, but a peace favourable to germany. but it backfired. many think he actually wanted britain as an ally against the ussr.
@hogalog One thing that is also forgotten is that both the Halifax, and especially the Lancaster, could carry much greater loads than either the B-17 or the B-25, the main US heavies used in Europe. A modified Lancaster could carry 2000lb more than a B-29, the Tallboy at 22,000 pounds, the heaviest ordnance of the war. Hitler, and Goring saw to it that the Luftwaffe never had effective strategic bombers, a serious oversight.
@SouthwestRanger it was a honor that those Polish pilots got credit for having the most kills in the Battle of Britain. it gave hope for their countrymen in Poland who were being terrorized by the Germans.
The original Italian version had the intro music from 8:45 replaced by German military Badenweiler-march mixed with Preussen Gloria march. I've never been able to understand the reason for that.
It would not have hurt to have sent a few fighters to Dunkirk to down the not very numerous German aircraft strafing and bombing the retreating British troops waiting for transport across the Channel, and the defeated French who were gathering there, as well as sinking the rescue ships. It was only a few miles from England. "Weekend à Zuydcoote" with Jean-Paul Belmondo well depicts the appalling gory mess that was Dunkirk. The German pilots there went on unscathed to the Battle of Britain
@rewwwwwwwwwww Not just the Bf109's but alse the He-111's were all Merlin powered ex-Spanish models built post-war with the same engine as the Spitfire and Hurricane
Funny, but the Frenchman at 1:05 is Chevalier, Clouseau's assistant in the Pink Panther. That guy plays French middle of rank officers in any British movie or what?
@RedGuards . Been checking. 3 flying and 3 taxiing Hurricanes and a larger number of mock ups. 27 spitfires of which 12 flew. About 50 Bouchons (spanish Me109 with merlin engines). 17 flew. 32 Heinkels, from Spain, all of which flew, and 2 ju52-3m, also from Spain
I don't know how he managed it, but Olivier actually managed to look remarkably like "Stuffy" Dowding, despite the fact that they don't resemble each other much at all. And from what I've read about Dowding, he's got him to the life.
@puffin02 Dowding was there to see some scenes being filmed and was deepley moved and bought too tears by Olivier's performence. Olivier even joked he'd been sitting at that desk all day and makeing a total mess of it to which Dowding replyed "oh I'm sure you are!" Too which all in the room laughed at!
@puffin02 The real one watched some of the scenes being filmed and was brought to tears by the power of the performence! After Olivier said he'd been at that desk all day and makeing a total mess of it and Dwoding said "Oh I'm sure you are" to which all in the room laughed.

I believe they should try & remake this classic. It would be great to see new CGI in the skies appove England.
The movie's plot was great & the action was very well done, just lacks the wow factor of CGI.
So come on Brits, remake & relive your finest hour.

Laurence Olivier as Dowding - brilliant! All the actors in this film are top notch.

It may have been state-of the-art effects for the time (1969), but it still looks damn good today! A great film!

USA would still win but without England as a base, defeating Germany would involve atomic weapons.
PotatoGunsRule 3 months ago
@PotatoGunsRule usa couldnt even get the mexicans of there own land they got the English to do it lmao

Had Hitler approved Goering' bold invasion plan (the airborne one) or stayed focused on England and the RAF, once UK fell there would no way Germany could be invaded. Only Russia could beat them then.
PotatoGunsRule 3 months ago
Just noticed - this is not the original movie version - the titles in the opening sequence are not the originals. The words Battle of Britain were in red, white and blue and did NOT come screaming out of the screen at you!
jasperozzie61 3 months ago
50TNCSA - they used the Spanish version of the 109f (which they modified for the film to look like 109e's) as the Spanish Airforce was STILL flying them in 1968 when most of the filming was done.

Up shit creek but still with a couple of paddles left.

so what plane did they use to represent the bf 109 in this movie

Anybody noticed that the Luftwaffe guys saluted the traditional way instead of the HH-salute?
Hopefully just an overlooked detail, it would be sad if the entire movie is historically inaccurate.
rockyblacksmith 5 months ago
@rockyblacksmith the wehrmacht kept their military salute until 1944. after the assasination attempt on hitler it was ordered for them aswell.
Blindanddumb 4 months ago

Warum gibt es keine Untertiteln? I can understand a lot of the German, but not all of it. What happened to the subtitles? Otherwise, great film, thanks for posting. I cannot believe a version of this film exists that has no subtitles in the German speaking segments. Who is it for? A specific, bilingual target audience?

this movie and the German made "Dresden" should be watched back to back to see bombing on both sides
eisenkreuzmusik 1 year ago
@eisenkreuzmusik if we are being honest germany got hammered a lot harder. the raf took german tactics in the blitz, and perfected them. a single raf bomber for example a halifax or a lancaster could carry as many bombs as 4 or 5 heinkel 111's, twice as far and 100mph faster..... and the raf had several thousand. imo hitler knew he couldnt defeat britain so didnt waste much effort, he tried to bomb them into peace talks but failed.
hogalog 1 year ago
@hogalog I think the Germans pictured themselves invading Britain just like they did France. I think they thought they could really win a war after an invasion after beating Britain senseless in North Africa.
eisenkreuzmusik 1 year ago
@eisenkreuzmusik the propagandists convinced the common body of the german people and forces that they could, but i think the high ranking men knew all along they couldnt do it and never intended to - even if they defeated the raf they stood no chance against the royal navy. many theorists now claim hitler just wanted to barter peace with britain, but a peace favourable to germany. but it backfired. many think he actually wanted britain as an ally against the ussr.
hogalog 1 year ago 2
@hogalog One thing that is also forgotten is that both the Halifax, and especially the Lancaster, could carry much greater loads than either the B-17 or the B-25, the main US heavies used in Europe. A modified Lancaster could carry 2000lb more than a B-29, the Tallboy at 22,000 pounds, the heaviest ordnance of the war. Hitler, and Goring saw to it that the Luftwaffe never had effective strategic bombers, a serious oversight.

The Group That Got The Most Kills During The BOB Was Not British But A Free Polish Squadron
