  • Big Star and The Dwight Twilley Band are the two greatest power pop groups of all time.

  • @sirdavidprovost Flamin´Groovies was first power pop band but they did not knew it.

  • man i love this band

  • Thanks for posting. Love this band.

  • Here is what I fail to understand: I know I was listening to Floyd, Zep, Mott, etc. in '72, but HOW did I miss this band??? (I blame you, Art Class crushes!!!)

  • @prinzonyx1 I was around in those days and probably because they did not get much airplay.

  • Born in '65, I've often thought of myself as a fairly well rounded rock aficionado. Truly, I've been humbled, as I quite innocently stumbled upon Big Star. This song, although I'd never heard it before three days ago, feels so familiar...like it was always in my head. Wonderful lyrics and beautiful harmonies. Finding gems like this is what makes youtube great!

  • if you can't have the beatles ...their understudies do some nice stuff ...like this..bangles just kill this tune the fab-4 cast a loooong shadow.

  • This is new to my ears, but I"ll be damned if I cant hear the likes of Cheap Trick and Dada, Beach Boys and a smidgen of REM here?

  • Love, Moby Grape, Nick Drake, Gram Parsons, Southern Comfort, Butterfield Blues Band, Big Star...All awaiting recognition for their awesome talent and recorded legacy. I am just now discovering Big Star. Could they be the greatest of these? RIP Alex...and Chris Bell too, let's not forget him. Laura Nyro was on this list, but thank heavens she is finally in the R'n'R Hall of Fame now, bless her. It' about time!!! Get all of these in the RRHOF right now!!

  • I don't know. Maybe I'd press the dislike button. I just never got Big Star, I think they're real BORING. Good guitar solo though, but the melodies just bore me... And you know, I LOVE Neil Young, Moby Grape, Richard Lloyd, The Byrds, Flamin Groovies...

  • @AlNaafiysh thats okay man! Its the character of performance that i like about these fellas, i agree its not groundbreaking, even back in the seventies. However, the band as a whole have a unique voice I feel. (like a lot of bands pre-2000s)

  • Alex Chilton.. GENIUS.. LOVE THIS LOVE THIS LOVE THIS LOVE THIS AS A MUSICIAN AND AS A FORMER RADIO JOCK.. LOVE THIS .. DECEMBER GURLS GOT IT BAD.. OHHH MY I AM OOONE... OF THOSE..

  • Why are people discusing the beatles and the beach boys on a big star video?

  • @60s4everdude not sure about the beach boys but the beatles i can see. that was their main influence.

  • Stfu up with the beatles why is everyone on their nuts. UHHHH what about the beach boys? why doesn't anyone talk about them as much as the beatles? Brian Wilson> lennon mcartney combined. IF the beatles had been around in the 80s they would have done dance cause they rip off what's popular so they can sell records!!!!!

  • @tacosaucemafia

prob because while brian wilson was a genius (i personally love the beach boys especially from the album "Today" and on)...his band mates were not to his level....with the beatles lennon and mccartney were geniuses with distinctive styles (george was no slouch either with his later contributions)....it also hurts the beach boys that in the midst of making the "Smile" album Brian Wilson had a breakdown and the quality of the material thereafter was not pet sounds good

  • @tacosaucemafia In a word: stfu.

  • @tbdehart In a made up word: ftso!

  • @tacosaucemafia Clueless choner. You'll get it someday. :)

  • @tacosaucemafia You clearly are a muppet that has no business talking music.

  • @tacosaucemafia you're insane. the beatles are amazing. agree it'd be nice to see the beach boys get some more love.

  • How could anyone ever get tired of listening to Big Star?

  • you know to compare this band with The Beatles is waste of time

  • What a great flowing cant help but feel good rock n roll song..i havnt heard this since high school and niether myself or friends had the album 45 or 8 track...so im thinkin wow i missed out on years of a great song, but gotcha Big Star now!

  • What a great flowing cant help but feel good rock n roll song..i havnt heard this since high school and niether myself or friends had the album 45 or 8 track...so im thinkin wow i missed out on years of a great song, but gotcha Big Star now!

  • Why would someone give this tune a "dislike"?

  • @derek4ur They thought the dislike button meant download...I know it's a shame.

  • Big Star does the Beatles better than the Beatles

  • and the spongetones do the beatles better than big star. love BS. dont get me wrong. but if you want the best beatles rip-offs you go with spongetones then klaatu.

  • the greatest power pop song

  • Cuz the beatles suck, thats why.

  • @lucky77st thats a good way to get people to trust your music taste..

  • @IndieFolkRocker Haha. I was thinking the same thing. Well put.

  • @lucky77st the beatles don't suck at all. most useless and untrue comment i've ever read. and that's saying a lot.

  • @Archibaldtimms

I like McCartney a lot actually, but your easy dismissal of Lennon's post Beatles records shows an obvious lack of knowledge of Lennon's post Beatles music. Please troll elsewhere.

  • There is absolutely nothing wrong with this song.

  • Hey JAbernathy937Dc were you even alive when the Beatles were about? You don't have the first clue. Do more research before looking silly please.

  • @JAbernathy937DC Mcartney was the beatles. He had to carry Lennon the whole way. Even after, Quite a few Wings songs are good... Lennon had... one.

  • @Archibaldtimms one? every song from platic ono band is amazing.

  • @Archibaldtimms are you mentally retarded? paul didn't carry john. they were both two of the greatest ever. one good lennon song?? i guess you haven't heard plastic ono band. every damn song is good and it's one of the best records of all time. imagine is a great album too. i guess imagine is his one good song right? what about jealous guy and instant karma, you goofball.

  • Alex has given me many magical moments since I 1st discovered his brand of rock in the mid 70's.Just the way that he did things was so rock n roll..and the urban myth going around about how REM found him working as a dishwasher in some back street New Orleans club just added to the legend.Alex is the true portrait of a real American hero. May his great discography stand as a testament to this true iconic legend

  • @JAbernathy937DC Why hate McCartney? Fine, nothing he's done in the last twenty years or so has mattered much, but come on...he was just as responsible for the awesomeness of the Beatles as John was. I hate how everyone worships Lennon and shits on Paul. The guy is a fucking musical genius. Yeah, okay, he isn't still doing particularly relevant or meaningful work, but he had his day. And his productive years were a lot better than what most people will ever achieve. Anyway....I LOVE BIG STAR!!!!

  • @MckyMseNTarotCrds Maybe because Paul wrote about 20 ridiculous songs like Obladi Oblada and Rocky Racoon for every great song like Maybe I'm Amazed and Hey Jude.

  • @industrialsun i know a lot of people who love rocky racoon. it's a funny song. i think it's great! i like obladi oblada too, a cool little ska song that's been covered by many artists.

  • @MckyMseNTarotCrds Well said and rightious point made!

  • @MckyMseNTarotCrds Pauls simplicity is reflected in Sgt. Pepper, his creation, te one of a musical genius. John is just a hippie (a great one) trying to spread love, but he is no fun.

  • @juanpa19 sgt pepper's is shit

  • @MckyMseNTarotCrds Love the comments your making. Made me think if he was killed or died young that the dumb asses would think differently, because everyone seems so effected. Thanks for your insight.

  • @MckyMseNTarotCrds I think you forgot about (in my opinion) one of the most talented and under rated of the beetles, George Harrison. This man was a musical genius but no one gives him credit like they give Paul McCartney and John Lennon.

  • @MckyMseNTarotCrds Paul was the Beatles... Not that other dude

  • @Archibaldtimms not that other dude?? shut up.

  • This is not just great music, it's so fucking far ahead of it's time...you can hear some traces of Todd Rundgen when he's doing good pop, and the Rasberries, but this was just cooler and rockier and seems like the bridge between the Beatles and Cheap Trick (when they were heavy pop)...just gorgeous heartbreaking stuff, I was a teen when it came out and it got me laid, so there, it's supposed to!!!

  • This is some lame shit.

  • LOveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

  • This is pretty much the greatest song ever

  • here is an excellent version of the song by British group The Searchers (who are still touring, by the way) search (:)) for "the searchers september girls" on youtube. they use excellent 12 string guitar and great harmony vocals

  • @gregorheinrich The Searchers may have covered it, but Chilton wrote it & recorded it first with Big Star. Beware of the Searchers re-recordings by the way, most of them suck compared to their originals like "Needles and Pins" and "When You Walk In The Room".

  • Brown University - Sept 1987 - Timeless, with Manny and Paul. We would go pogo, we were corndogs. This is my life.

  • 2 best songwriters ever Alex Chilton and Paul Westerberg

  • @jayzzzzzz82 I have heard from reputable sources that children by the millions sang for Alex Chilton when he came round.

  • @andomamern

I've also heard those replacement children were in love with that song.

  • I have a song on the tip of my tounge( the one at the end of thats 70's show finale) anybody know it?

  • @brandon5412

"In The Street", I think it's called. It's on #1 record anyway.

  • @brandon5412

    Thirteen.

  • Miss you Alex!

  • Isn't this the theme song for a video game?

  • Love that jangly guitar.

  • Love that jangly guitar.

  • I love this song. My ex-girlfriend was a September gurl. I'm a December boy. Fuck.

  • God Bless Alex. Have been a Big Star fan for 10 years, and will never forget your genius.

  • Hey Big Star Fans, check out Austin Rock Band called The Happen-Ins... they love Big Star. Cool band with a groove sound.

  • read a bit about this outstanding band

their story and music reminds me a little of the band "Moby Grape" .

  • @TheDarmardar Wow! You are one of VERY few people i know of that have even heard of Moby Grape! They were so criminally overlooked...

  • man what a beautiful tune

  • He influenced all my songs ....and i miss him everyday....Bruce Joyner

  • bigROCKSTAR...... not forgotten

  • Rendition of this song cannot beat Bangles'!!

    ed

    w w w eddy nu

  • Tell me .. what a f'n Just a great sounding soothing feelgood song ..

an Angry A-hole would not like this song

  • ...is it religiously correct to envy God? See, He's listening to Alex everyday, for free!...

  • What is that? I like Teenage Fanclub since 1993, and only two minutes ago I got the link to this great band of which I had never heard so far - very good, now I´ve detected a couple of new Teennage Fanclub - esque - Albums!

  • what year was this out? i think i did hear this in the late 70s. how did chilton die? never heard of him other than the

bangles and replacements gave homage to him.

  • how did he die?

  • @The096757

    heart attack, March, last year.

    ( in my birthday :( )

  • @edumota happy b-day :)))))

  • @The096757 Don't worry this stuff will become legend in the way that it never did while they were together. This is a PERFECT song.

  • @The096757 He died from lack of health insurance. He was an American. His country hated his life, so it took it and threw it down.

  • what year was this song out? how did alex chilton die? truthfully i don't know who he is othe t han the bangles and replacements give homage to him.

  • OMG! It's taken me till now to realise this wasn't originally sung by the Bangles! Silly Me!

  • I love this band! My favorite alternative band, garage band, and underground band all rolled into one.

  • the essential big star tune?

  • Althugh I'm a Japanese, I love this sweet melody of the pop song !

    Thanks to Mr. Alex Chilton.

  • @concretejungle0720 agreed, btw it's awful what's happening in your country right now- we're thinking of you guys, please take care!!!

  • strange, you listen to Big Star and you can hear all the different bands that were influenced by them... a little R.E.M., a little Replacements, a lot of Game Theory... and that's just in this one tune.

Yet another reason big record companies should die out... if it wasn't for legal wrangling over distribution on the first two albums and the record company essentially shelving both, Big Star would've been HUGE. So many people never heard of Big Star because they COULDN'T hear them.

  • @soundboy3 Don't forget Teenage Fanclub! This song is their whole career in three minutes.

  • Very 'Nowhere Man' but it's own tune. shoulda been a #1

  • Love this tune. Great lyrics, soaring guitars, sweet sentiments and lovely melodies!

  • An American Power Pop Manifesto ! F-ing Great!

  • great song and thanks for the lyrics, but I think in those days people spelled girls correctly

  • @apronlow sorry i'm wrong!

  • Alex Chilton was a hero

  • My favorite song. Probably the single greatest pop song ever recorded. I was singing it the other day and my daughter started singing it along with me. It's impossible to have any ears at all and not be moved by "September Gurls."

  • ...such a voice...

  • A true Legendary Song by a True Legend !!!

    Memphis still rocks !

  • I've probably listened to this song twice a week for at least the last ten years.

  • IF YOU THINK YOUR TASTE IN MUSIC IS OBJECTIVELY GOOD YOU'RE FUCKING STUPID, END OF

  • why do all the good ones die and all the shit ones hang around?

  • @MrSlimjimk to become legends... thats the only excuse

  • @MrSlimjimk only the good die young ;)

  • @MrSlimjimk ask this to keith richards... JUST JOKING

  • @MrSlimjimk that's completely not true. But Alex Chilton rocks

  • @MrSlimjimk sing it Billy Joel !!!

  • @MrSlimjimk

The others are doing business. People like Alex Chilton, Johnny Thunders, Jeffrey Lee Pierce, Ian Curtis, Jeff Buckley, David Mc Comb, Grant Mc Lennan (and so many more) put their soul to the test.

It's the only way to create something truly great. That's why some of us will always remember them and, as MrMet2433 says, RIPs don't mean much.

  • @MrSlimjimk be nice to Jody Stephens....

  • @MrSlimjimk Bieber is gonna end up being the oldest human ever if thats true lol....If eveyone chips in $1, we can get a hit man to take care of the problem though.

  • Rest in Peace, Andy Hummel. Thank you for the inspiration.

  • Great band. Thanks Alex

  • Alex you left us too soon! Brilliant music is your legacy!!!!!!

  • Born in '66 so I missed the 60's and 70's music altogether. Thanks to youtube, I'm discovering this great music.

  • In 1986 I met Alex at an LA nightclub. Very nice man who is sorely missed

and never got the commercial success he deserved.

  • Is this the greatest song that was actually never a hit?

    i think it might be!

  • I'm a december boy and i got it bad...Thank you Mr.Chilton. R.I.P sir.

  • This song is perfect.

  • @cromagno

    Exactly!

  • So much better than California Gurls. This is what real music is.

  • Do I have it right that this song is about dumping your girlfriend in september because you think your cool and'll just get a new one at school, but then realizing your a lonely loser when you're alone in December?

  • Thank you Mr. Chilton for introducing me to this band.

  • I'm a fairly recent comer and how I regret not getting to know more of Chilton while he was alive. He seems like a lovely soul, is so amazingly talented, and he and Big Star have been fascinating to read about. I hate when good ones have to go young. Glad he and BS were able to leave a legacy behind despite so much bad luck.

  • @xreddragonx Hey I'm kinda new to this great music. I was born in 1967 and just now thanks to youtube am able to really enjoy Alex Chilton's music.

RIP Alex , wish I could of discovered you sooner.

  • I never got to see them live

    Fuck!

  • Thanks for this.

  • tom petty who?

  • Big Star: the greatest band no one listened to when they were originally around. It's great to see they are finally getting the recognition they deserve. September Gurls is one of the greatest songs ever.

  • I had the privilege to se Alex supporting (!) The Bo Deans in 87. The only time I've experienced the support act being forced of the stage under protests from the crowd:) He was great!

  • i love this band so hard

  • Nice little video montage!! I love this song (except that middle bit-"When I get to bed, yeah late at night, that's the time she makes it right.." I can forgive him pulling one line out of his a** though, cause it's just SO friggin' sweet! (The song, not his ass, well maybe, I really don't know. I'll just stop while I'm ahead!)

  • when did he die?

  • @sharon879 I don't know. If only there were some way to search for answers to questions on computers. Until that day comes, we will continue to ask the friendly people on youtube as they will always answer our questions and never respond with needless, bitter sarcasm. Hope this helps.

  • SEPTEMBER GURLS

    WE'RE UNFORGETTABLE

  • modern music just makes me want to listen to this song more.

  • Why's everyone saying RIP?

    Legends never die.

  • @MrMet2433 True.

  • @MrMet2433 well he did die so

  • Now 53, when I was 10 I´ve been waiting all the time to hear The Letter on the radio.

Big Songwriter an one one the best voices ever.

I´m Gonna miss you, God bless you ever.

  • rip alex + andy

  • in my opinion one of the greatest pop rock songs ever written

  • RIP Alex Chilton and Now Andy Hummel.

  • @eruptionmat Oh man Andy Hummel passed away too?! Nuts. Now there is only one guy left from this fantastic band on earth....sigh

  • @monkface Yes unfortunately we lost him to cancer only a few days ago. Again RIP Andy, Alex, and Chris.

  • R.I.P Andy Hummel

  • Just a huge thank you to the late great Alex Chilton for this and a host of other classics in an alterative world where talent & class are appreciated. Also to the late & equally grat Chris Bell for You And Your Sister

  • Never heard this song before, it's not that bad actually. Read an article about Alex Chilton's recent death and figured I'd check him out.

  • Is there any question why the Bangles chose to record

this one? One of the best songs written in the 70's, and

most people had never heard it. Their version was pretty

good, but Big Star's original, unheard by most, of course,

    better.

  • thumbs up if you are a september gurl!

  • so sad today. i fuckin love you alex. miss you. so sad. why

  • Why is everyone feeling so tragic about Alex Chilton? He didn't want fame, but was still respected by the world over. He had a family that he loved and found more important things in life and got to make music for decades. His life was cut short, but there's nothing to say that he didn't live a pretty great life.

  • @savvysearch i know man, hes ok but i fuckin miss him. it felt real good knowing he might wanna play some songs again. wat can i say man? him and chris bell are both so good. hate on me but i love them.

  • What crooked luck Alex had. He could have had it all. He ended up with zip. Tell me you can't hear greatest here?

  • oh well whaetver nevermind darling

  • This is pop perfection. One of my favourite songs of all time. And now I'm saddened to learn that Alex Chilton died this year. Too soon.

  • Power pop at its finest!

  • Songs about chicks rock, no matter what.

  • @GLABB69 so you're basically saying every song owns then

  • Just beautiful.
