It really takes me back to hear this music again. I didn't realize as a child how good these guys really were. Don and his band are really swinging the Reel St. Anne
I grew up in the 50's in Ottawa. Don Messer & his Islanders were on a CBC radio show every Sunday. Sure takes me back. To a time when it wasn't cool to admit you loved this stuff ;-)
The hairs just went up on my arms, Don Messers Jubilee was watched every week at our house, my Mom was a step dancer, and Grandfather and uncles were fiddle players, oooh the memories, thank you.
I love this!! I'm 56 years old and I remember siting around the TV watching Don's show. I didn't appreciate it at the time because I would have rather been playing outside. My dad watched it faithfully, not becuase it was the only channel we got back then but becuase it was the best music on TV. That and Tommy Hunter but he came later ... I think. This clip brought a tear to my eye and many memories... thank you!!
This show used to be a weekly tradition in my family, along with the 'newer' show of Tommy Hunter. I also seem to recollect that Tommy appeared on this show before he started his carreer, as well as another Tommy with the last name of Tommy Common. I remember that Charlie Chamberlain was always a favourite of mine at that age, and that the I seemed to like the 'expressions' of the bass player. He always seemed to smile and looked so enthused.
Memories. I grew up in Nova Scotia and I used to watch this show when I was a kid. We didn't have a choice in those days. Before cable TV came in back the early 70's we only had the CBC. LOL
dancing jigs was universal! from the South Georgia swamplands to misty Newfoundland to burnin dry Montana to the cold Yukon! everyone did jigs in the small towns and reserves.
This clip is from a show which was broadcasted again for the 35th anniversary of CBC/Radio-Canada, I think. I don't have the whole show, only some excerpts.
Canadian country music. Country music grew out of heavily Scottish and Irish regions like Appalachia in the US and culturally similar areas of Canada like Ontario and the Maritimes. Don Messer was from New Brunswick in the Maritimes.

Don Messer was to the Maritimes what Bob Wills was in the heart of Texas. Amaising.

Lookit him go! Yay, great post. When I was little (3 or 4) I used to dress up to watch Don Messer because I didn't want to dance in my pyjamas,

Mr Messer is pure Canadiana. How come he wasn't nominated in the CBC's "Greatest Canadian"?

Where did you get this footage? My grandfather (Cliff Adams) danced on this show and I would love to find some footage of that.
