This song reminds me of my grandmother. For the last 40 years, she's been raising kids and grandkids, and is probably the most old-fashioned, frumpiest person I know. I agree with you on why you think the title should be before she was momma, but I think it's a play on words, and the title has two meanings, saying, I see mom for who she is, hence the name fore she was momma. Fore is also short for before.

I about died when I found out how my mom used to be. nothing bad but she was quite the party animal. I was in my 30's when I found out and it still cracks me up. for some reason I just can't picture her like that LOL!!! My mom is the best.

Yeah, I guess there are some things that the kids don't need to know, but to be honest, knowing that my mother had stepped across a line or two when she was young made it easier for me to talk to her about stuff. And it also kept me from messing around with certain things, so it's good.
Hell, my mother sat me down when I was, like, 11/12 and told me all about how to ID drugs XD
