My 1.5 TB drive laasted 8 days, just long enough for me to backup all 1.2 TB's of information in preperation for a format, when it fell about 3 inches,
dead,
I have it dismantlled and sitting on my desk, an eternal reminder to always research a product before i buy it, and when choosing a laptop or desktop replacement, if the compnay sources their drives from seagate to no longer provide that computer manufacturer with my business again either,
Tonight I was on line trying to find info to get my seagate freeagent go. I came across your video and read online blogs that really discribed sooooo many problems with this company's product. I am trying to see how to launch a class action lawsuit against the company because something is really wrong. I think it is there intention to have there product defective and then charge you to fix their defective product. i am online tonight tring to locat an attorney.
this happened to me just a few days ago - same thing with seagate, they sent me to a data recovery company - I just bought the external hardrive within 30 days!
first, your audio is out of sync in this video. Secondly, the new model Seagate drives are utter garbage. Check newegg. The new model (7200.12 series) received horrible reviews. FWIW it's not just the external drives. Bare, internal PC hard drives have the same issue. I have a several year old 500GB model (7200.10 series) that works flawless and reports 0 errors. It is truly a quality control issue with the new drives. I bought a Samsung instead.
hey i've got a seagate hard drive, i've had it for 3 onths and i've probably used it about 30 times or less and its stopped working, they also want me to pay for my data to be recovered so i feel your pain, its really unfair that they make a product that they're sure is gona break and have the cheek to refer u to their own data recovery company, man its like a slap in the face and a kick in the nuts simultaneously
thank you, 4 this video sadly my external has just stop working today, im so pissed off, im sure you all can feel me on this, seagate products does not deserve to be on the market, they products should be banned, im sure you all agree.
i own 23 segate drive both of them failed 2day they are the seagate barracuda 7200.11 iv lost everything! seagate is garbage seriously. hows your western digital drives!
I feel for you, you have some good points, i have a seagate freeagent 500gb, it stopped working after only 20hrs, many people had problems with these, i was lucky to retrieve the info as it was temperamentally coming back on. Now i have a LaCie rugged but thinking to invest in a ssd which have no moving parts and read faster. I am going to try putting my drive in a new case to see if it will work again, i heard you can sometimes get info back put drive in plastic bag in freezer hang cables out.
Try replacing the drive control board with the board from the rebuilt drive from Segate (see youtube DIY videos)..For future...web backup is a good idea.. Another option I use is a D-Link DNS-323 (or similar) network attached storage with mirrored hard drives... (your data is duplicated on 2 drives).. use this in conjunction with some auto backup sw which automatically moves your data to the NAS. this works well but is not off-site backup..
Just a few thoughts...I share your grief, I have similar issues with hard drives made by WD, Maxtor , Toshiba and Segate.. All makes of HD have spindle issues. Also, as sure as death and taxes all hard drives will fail, some sooner some later..
If you have a seized spindle you may not avoid the $800 to get your data back... as they will need to move the 2 platters to a unit where the spindles are ok >>> this requires expensive tools..>>>
sounds more like you got an armature loose, if you really need it badly simply open it up the cleanest environment you can get at and place it back into its right position. Do not pry or lift something that doesnt want to be. if this is not the case then always remember to SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE when you plug something in, do not just unplug it when you dont need it. This could damage the disk permanatally and create bad sectors.
Thanks, Tonya. I'm getting a new laptop, and I was looking into external harddrives to transfer my information from this one to my next one. I will NOT be purchasing this. Thanks again for making sure this doesn't happen to your little lovebirds!
I never by Seagate...if I had known, I would have saved you the aggrevation. Except for my laptop (not sure the brand of hard drive), I only buy Western Digital and I have an enclosure so I can use an old hard drive as backup....there are software products that will help with data recovery. I'm gonna reach out to a friend and see what he recommends and let you know.
I've had better success with Westin Digital and Maxtor. Had two Seag-"grates" before and that's just what they did, . . . grate!!!! I still have a Seagate with a lot of pics, music, other really important info that I cannot access. It is very frustrating! I've been looking into a cheap recovery company to get my info back. And at 9:30, I would keep looking for another company, b/c that's ridiculous!!!
It's really hard to find out which products are up to par. I usually buy LITE-ON or Western Digital products like that. They are very good as long as you install them right.
Next time use Ontrack Easy Recovery Pro 6.4. I had a similar problem with my external hard drive from WD and was able to restore all my data. I had the same problems you mentioned - it was not the power or housing, it was the actual disc. My sister had a similar problem with her PC at work and her boss was going to spend thousands trying to recover the data. I sent her the app and she was able to retrieve all their data.
hell, you know its bad when they own their own data recovery company. thats basically stating they know their products are shit. wonder if its possible to sue them. you need to lol. i can only imagine how many ppl get ripped off from their company.
I've had this happen to me too and the people at Walmart (there isn't a Best Buy here) say they couldn't help me fix it. This happened a few years ago and I'm still mad about it.
I wish you would have pointed this out earlier. I just purchased two seagate internal HD about 5 days ago. I purchased a 500gb HD and a 1TB HD. I cant return the 500gb drive since I already opened it but I may return the 1 TB drive to Best Buy..
But my advice is to never leave these drives running. Some people tend to leave their external HD running since it has its own dedicated power supply. Sometimes the HD will be spinning even when your computer is turned off. Also, instead of buying external hd why dont you buy an internal harddrives and put it in a self cooled enclosure. And there is a reason why these drives are so unreliable. These drives are basically made off of the same style HD were made 20 years ago. Its a conspiracy!
You know what is also bad? How about buying a $10 digital camera that tells you half of the system requirements on the package but when you open it they tells you everything in the manual, including processor type (which I didn't have an Intel). So I can't use it, nor can I get a refund. I go online to find the company who made it and they didn't even have the product on their website!!! As far as EHDs, I know firsthand that some EHDs either won't work or mess up your CPU. It's a major ripoff!!
hay tonya what happened to you is one of my biggest fears using computers. i back my files on dvd. purchase a 50 pack of blank dvd-r at radio shack $12.99. for a total of 235 gigs. if you decide to spend $150 buy eleven 50 packs for a total of 2.5 terrabytes wich would be the same as buying 5 seagate external hard drives at $150 each. (2.5 terrabytes= 2500 gigabytes.) in my opinion dont use such hq video. they take up too much space and dont make people see or hear your videos any different.
Just last week I returned my Seagate external hard drive...it did some crazy stuff to my computer (losing the volume altogether) My hubby had to work on it to figure out how to get the volume back on my computer.
The irony is Tonya, that while you were speaking, the advertisement next to your video was about a Seagate HDD recovery company that "recovers your Seagate HDD for as cheap as 199 euro"... I couldn't stop laugh, sorry...
Hi there Tonya Do you know what I did Well my last computer did not have anything that I wanted so I bought my self a brand new Computer and it is a Acer and it has 2 hard drives in it but I would a DVD cds to put your stuff on it and also backup your harddrive if your tower has 2 hard drives and then also back everything up on to a harddrive and then store it somewhere that is save and will not get drity and recked as well too. but I would save all of it on to a DVD cd.
i got a seagate hard drive n its so bad wont transfer info onto windows.... some computers wont recognise it... so bad... and i spent alot of my mony on it... i wanna new harddrive that will work on all computers and is reliable
CAN ANYONE SUGEST ANYTHING TO ME? IM FROM THE UNK.
its only expensive becuz they know ppl will pay thousands of dollars to get retrieve they info lol.. i have a seagate myself.. thanks for this vid! i will b getting another drive.. my whole life is on this drive.. if i lose it.. i will die
Damn Tonya, sorry to hear that...could have told you that Seagate sucks... Western Digital for Life!!!
Seriously though, as many people have told you, you gotta backup the backups. Especially for someone running a business... My personal routine is: Ext HD --> CD/DVD-->Online Storage...anyone of these points can(AND WILL) fail, but at least you have the others...
i recorded a whole cd on my external hard drive and just when i was wrapping up the project, it died.. i had to do it all over again! i was devistated!!
im lookin for an external hardrive now i was looking at a passport or a mybook heard great things about both but thanx to u i know im NOT buying a seagate
O boy. I got one; have had it for over a year and it works great. I hope nothing happens to it because that's my life on there. And what does it matter to him how much what's on it is worth to you? I swear, some people go into work high on crack.
Use the "new" one for parts!! You can yank out the disc in the one and then put it in the "new" one, and then rip all your data off it and throw them away!!!!!
Sorry to hear about your plite with the seagate,It looks like they lost a customer 4 life.Amazone customers that purchased those type of harddrive have been leaving neg comments about it. You would think that seagate could be trying to do better about keeping their customers.
Did you see the Data Recovery Scheme special on NBC? It pretty much outlines just what you said.
I see that you are using the portable externals. You really should get a normal external harddrive that has to be plugged into the wall. They are sturdier, and just use the travel harddrives to get stuff off your computer when you don't have a wall plug to use. Really, you shouldn't need more than like a 250GB portable harddrive.
thanks tonya! I will never buy a seagate. My husband told me they suck. He is a computer nerd and said any hard drive you should run on your computer for a week before putting any information on it.
People need to start making more videos like this more often when they get burned by some of these crappy companies. Thanks for the heads up. I will never buy one.
i have a Maxtor . I have had it for about a year. I've dropped it and slid it around. Some hard drives come with a CD that can take you to their website and back up the back up
Always have external back up no matter what the HD brand is. Nowadays it's good to get a nice graphics card too. A card with at 512MB ram with HD optional Take the strain off of pc memory.
If anyone finds anything cheaper than 895 I wanna know too because I have an external that has that buzzin' sound going on and everything else you mentioned too. I was gonna get a seagate too, but your story has done it. I'm going with Wstrn Digi next time. I'm willing to wait. Maybe I can learn how to recover it myself.
Oh by the way, there are 2 hour movies online (crisp quality) that are less than a gig so there could be a less size consuming format for you to save your vids in.
T, get another drive...a bigger desktop drive and have that as a backup for the backup that you dont move!!! All those drives have the potential to go up if you bang them or drop them.
I had a Seagate 7200, which I got from Iomega. Mine dropped about 1 1/2 feet to the ground when my mother came to visit without calling first. I'm still angry and upset when I think about it. It's making the same buzzing noise as yours, so I hope you let us know if you find a solution to your troubles. I can't bear the thought of losing my data. I was going to get another Seagate soon...but now I'm having second thoughts... :o/
By the way, you don't need a ton of DVDs to back up the data. Just make a "drive image," which will capture all of the contents of the drive as one compressed thing. You can Google it if you don't know what I mean. I only wish I had done that with mine. :(
It's a real hastle to have something like that happen, but then turn around and talk to someone that speaks broken english makes it worse. How am I suppose to get my point across and explain when then person you talk to can't speak good english. What are they there for???
Seagate is absolute garbage! Their share price is up (at $15.92 today) from keeping their cost down. But as the word gets out, that share price is going to fall.
Tonya you should ALWAYS back up your files. I found this out the hard way, as you did. Fortunately what I lost was replaceable for the most part. I was quoted at $500 to retrieve the files though.....and IMO that's still a rip off. $1,500 is highway robbery. A bit of advice.....buy Western Digital hard drives. They're the best. And don't forget to buy 2. Actively use one and back up files on another one and turn that one off so that the life of the hard drive isn't affected.
Thanks for commenting Bazooka, apparently you didnt watch the whole video though. The Seagate WAS my backup to my laptop, and I DID get a western digital :)
Yeah I made my first comment based on the title and the description in the sidebar, and did so before viewing the video. Weird that both crashed on you like that. Good luck with the WD hard drive.
wow. i think if someone were to ask how much your info is worth before telling you how much it cost to fix their OWN faulty tech, SEAGATE WILL FACE EXTERMINATION, they suck freaking scumbags ... tonya you look like you are about to cry, i hope you find justice soon.
No, I heard that the laptop crashed. I'm just saying that having your IMPORTANT data on an external hard drive isn't enough. I backup my backups. I work in the IT field and see this happen all the time. Most external hard drives aren't meant to be bumped and dropped since the components inside a very fragile. If this is the case, then you need to purchase a solid state disk. I'm sorry that you lost your data. I know how it feels as I have 2 hard drives that in need recovered :(
I have a WD external HD. Its not a portable one but i've taken it a few places non the less and it has fallen from the height of my desk before. I think i've had it for about two years?? I think i'm going to have to get a new one soon since this one is getting older just to be safe because its got the only copy of hundreds of dollars of itunes purchases on it but so far I haven't had any problems with it
My hubby says to change posting to Not just seagate internal hard drives only because their internal hard drives are the same for the lap top.. so all seagate drives..
Yeah if enough of us complain, we should be able to get this done for free..... my drive just mysteriously went out about 4 or 5 months ago..... so maybe there is something wrong with these drives that they are making......
I didn't even try to call for them to retrieve all of my files, and they are very important files at that.... I knew they were going to try and charge an arm and a leg.... we need to get together and find out if we can sue for damages, cuz this seems fishy to me
they are some tricksters. PUT THEM ON BLAST.... wah d jail is dis dey gettin on wid? so its like a compnay creating faulty products to make money off of its defected items.....NASTY cus dem so no dat yuh need yuh information back off of it.. im angry about that too..
Tonya I know what it's like to lose data girl! I would flip too! Heck, when I lost the last pics I took of my Mom before she died I had lost! Now I'm very careful with all I have on here! After what happened to you, I will never buy their external now. I've always been a Seagate fan because out of all my hard drives in the last 16 years they are the ones that never fail.. INTERNAL drives that is. I still have my 545MB Seagate Caviar. Go figure!
My 1.5 TB drive laasted 8 days, just long enough for me to backup all 1.2 TB's of information in preperation for a format, when it fell about 3 inches,

Dont know if this happened to you, but everyone, if your external or internal hard drive reads "corrupted and/or unreadable" go to run and paste this
chkdsk f: /f
change the F in f: to your problem hard drive letter and enter. It should come back unless truly damaged. Theres a virus that causes this.

Mrsjackie1 2 years ago
If you are banging and dropping your hard drive, then you need a solid state hard drive. Most regular hard drives can't handle abuse like that.
basketballbabe03 2 years ago

SexyVelour 2 years ago
By the way, you don't need a ton of DVDs to back up the data. Just make a "drive image," which will capture all of the contents of the drive as one compressed thing. You can Google it if you don't know what I mean. I only wish I had done that with mine. :(

BazookaIke 2 years ago
Thanks for commenting Bazooka, apparently you didnt watch the whole video though. The Seagate WAS my backup to my laptop, and I DID get a western digital :)

Take the company to a small claims court. If the info was important and contained important info, the company should be responsible for the HD crash.
ophsj 2 years ago
If most of that data was important, it should have been backed up regardless if it was a seagate drive or any other type of drive. Plain and simple.

babe, the harddive WAS the backup... my laptop was what crashed first... guess you didnt listen to the story :)
Well thanks for commenting though.

TonyaTko 2 years ago
