This song is not supposed to be sung softly. It was written by the composer for a belter, and Martha in the original cast was Betty Buckley. . Check it out. This Martha is perfect and her voice awesome.
No, actually she was quite sickly, physically. Mentally, socially, emotionally she was quite strong. They think she suffered from diabetes which is why she had so many miscarriages. I would like to see an original score because this singer's voice is not consistent with the sweet, melodic sound of a violin.
I absolutely respect the power that actress sings with, but she is a little too powerful for the part of Martha.
Actually, Martha Jefferson was delicate and sickly and died only after 10 years of marriage to Thomas Jefferson. So I actually think Blythe Danner's version is actually more accurate.
Oh, that was magnificent. Two years ago, I played the part of John Adams in the eighth grade play(I'm a girl, by the way, but I think I pulled it off pretty well. Besides, it's middle school, what do you expect?). Anyway, this is probably my favorite song of the play, and I taught myself how to play the solo on violin. It's pretty cool. Thanks for posting!
This song is 100% belted in both versions of the Broadway cast recordings. So, I think this actress is singing it correctly and as it is intended to be sung.
i love this song... and this performance... but why is she extreme belting everything??? isnt this supposed to be sung sweetly in an operatic head-voice??? idk maybe its just me...
This role was originated on Broadway by Betty Buckley who is the premiere belter of our time...so I seriously doubt this song is intended to be sung sweetly. The movie performance ruined it.
it may be the dress, but she reminds me of Nancy from Oliver....

I like her voice, but she's not soft enough to play Martha.

Although I don't particularly like the "chicken neck" thing Blythe Danner does during the song.

This is fantastic. Patty Apple is amazingly talented. I wish I could see this in person! Difficult to believe this is not professional theatre.

Great production. Martha Jefferson is superb; Franklin and Adams are excellent. The violinist is good too.
