He gets it back later in the series. He could have had it a long time ago, but chose not to because of stupid pride. He becomes full again later in the series for the rest of the series too. He is also the ultimate demon, like his father and mother, Naraku states this later in the series as well.

Um, Megetsuhi was close to killing him before he got bakusaiga and his arm back.

Other than that, I don't think there were many 'close calls' with him. He IS a daiyoukai, after all.
